Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Wait… seriously there were blackhawk helicopters over your house? Where are you and why the heck were they scoping???

They’re obviously the gu’mint trying to ram nationalized healthcare down woody’s neighbors’ throats. (Though, if taken literally, this might create some real health care problems).

Well, Sikorsky is about 10 miles north of us but seriously, we were really shaken!

woody–any idea why they were there? that is scary…we’ve had police helicopters fly over our community numerous times and it typically means they’re chasing down criminals hiding out in our palm trees…

H says it was a test drive. I must say they were in perfect formation and headed in the direction of NYC. Oh, well…

woody – you’re near Sikorsky??? We’re practically neighbors! I drive past Sikorsky quite often on my way to/from Fairfield County, where we lived until 3+ years ago. (Now we’re near Hartford.)

Howdy neighbor! (Did you hear them this AM??)

Ok…I am in the middle of making a good dinner since H was home today and D2 arrived home around 4:30. H took off golfing and D2 went to BF’s house. I have this dinner all to myself now! Sheesh…

Moda…Dean sounds wonderful!
woody…would have scared me!

Remember how last summer we were trying to think of all the things we needed to teach our kids before they left for school? How to do laundry, how to handle money, how to get a presecription filled, etc etc…

Here’s one I forgot: Don’t leave an unopened soda can in your car for an extended period of time.

Seriously. Son left an unopened can of root beer in his car for the entire semester. Cold hot cold hot. It finally exploded a couple of days ago. On the plus side, he did get to use that ShamWow that we bought at the state fair!

LOL!! And how well did it work? Inquiring minds want to know.

D2 and I are headed for some outlet mall shopping. I am looking for a summer purse. Nice to have some time together! Who cares if the cleaning soesn’t get done for Easter dinner at our house! ;)

Missypie…Yikes!

We are between Camp David and Washington DC. Can definitely tell when the Prez flies over and when he is at Camp David for the weekend. When he is there, jets constantly patrol overhead. We can’t see them - must be very high - but we can sure hear them. In bed at night - I try so hard to fall asleep before they come around again.

Eddieodessa, we live within a mile and a half of one of the local airports where the F-16s escort folks who have strayed into the no-fly zone. We call it “the sound of freedom” – and boy, does it scare the cr*p out of the dog and rattle the china cabinet!

Sometimes when the Space Shuttle has to land at Edwards out in the Mojave desert, we hear the sonic boom as it lands. And every time we wonder, “what was that?”

I have never heard a sonic boom. Would love to sometime. There are so many things I want to do and see in our country…

So, to change the subject: I walked 2 miles around our neighborhood yesterday and today. Got sunburned yesterday - today I remembered suntan lotion. I really need to bite the bullet and start writing down what I eat again. Haven’t done it in a couple of weeks - and haven’t lost much in a couple weeks. Hm…I see a connection here.

Bought a fresh coconut cake for Easter dessert. I think I will be more able to leave it alone - much easier to leave than chocolate would have been.

Eggson visited home for a few hours today (between helping friend move and getting back to school before GF got off work).

It was a so nice to see him, and I found out so much, please indulge me…
We were impressed that he knows when he has to sign up for dorm (next week). He has an appointment with his advisor and knows when to sign up for fall classes (also next week).

Classes are mostly fine, except psychology and orchestra – they are “easy.” Next semester he plans more physics, linear algebra, more pyschology, Latin 3, orchestra and individual instrument lesson.

He got extra credit from his physics prof for nailing him with a pie during a campus festival. (??!??)

He’s volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Me: So son, did you mail those thank yous to grandma and aunt for your birthday gifts?

“Mom, they are all ready to go but I dont have stamps.”

Me: There is a post office on campus, you only need two!

“But Mom, my roommate says they are more expensive on campus. I’m going to wait until I can get some cheaper ones.”

Me: Aaarrgh.
(Yes folks, I gave him two stamps.)

eggmom-- how much more expensive could stamps be on campus? a nickel? kids …

It is still amazing to me what they know (advising is coming! housing registration!) and what they don’t …

But it’s nice that classes are … fine.

The talk of sonic booms is chilling. The last I heard were not supposed to have been heard…the space shuttle Columbia upon re-entry. But it wasn’t one “boom” - it was three little ones - “ba-ba-boom.” It was early Saturday morning and none of us had any idea that we had just heard *the pieces *of the shuttle reentering. For a few days, the highway signs said, “watch for shuttle debris” but it all landed maybe 100 miles east.

How can you upcharge for stamps? Aren’t they worth what they’re worth? Son never mentioned they were more expensive on campus, just they he didn’t have any. Hoping he remembered to send grandparents thank you’s for his stay… would be nice if friends remembered as well, but his doing it is pretty crucial.

We buckled and bought D16 some wheels today. 99 Nissan Altima GKE with something like 70K miles. Nice enough but not too nice. She was pretty stoked regardless. I failed to get anything to make “special” for Easter dinner, but seriously? We are the most non-religious people who still believe in God and Jesus to exist. I think sending the kids to Catholic school for so long that we felt we had banked some miles. And now, we don’t have a church we go to and so, we don’t. And yet, this will be the first Easter we didn’t have family in town or to visit to give the day something “special” and so it completely slipped my mind. The only down side is that I think most groceries etc will be closed tomorrow and so, we are up the creek and I am too beat now to do anything about it. Hopefully it won’t be judged too harshly because I don’t feel that guilty.

Z – You’re telling me. Last semester it was a major accomplishment to get him to the post office to learn how to mail a letter.

Here’s something else I learned about campus mail. When a student gets a package, the post office emails them to tell them to come on by and pick it up. Oh well, I guess that Halloween candy would still be sitting there otherwise.

Moda – I somehow doubt the stamps are any more expensive. Just as I doubt the roommate had a clue about them.
