LOL Moda – but I understand completely! We moved to our current location almost 4 years ago, but I still drive back every 4-5 weeks to have my hair cut. Granted it’s only about 1 1/2 hours, and I often catch up with friends over lunch, but … Our next move will most likely put us too far away to go back, and I’m a little panicked at the thought.

I was suprised that the '10 son of a friend hadn’t chosen a school yet. It seems that they were surprised when his schools all came back with $0 need based aid, when the husband had been unemployed for a portion of the year and even when working, their income isn’t all that high. They called one of the schools - thank goodness! As the person went over the file item by item, she said, “And of course, with your income of $1 million, you don’t qualify for need-based aid…” Of course they about flipped. What a typo to make in your FAFSA! Now they are in the process of meeting in person with reps of his top three schools to try to salvage the situation.

Yikes, Missy… how does someone make that kind of mistake and not pick up on it. Granted, I have not filled out these forms but doesn’t it give you an estimate of your family contribution at some point?

DS actually called DH on the phone! Turns out he needed to discuss some car-trouble issues.

Also they discussed plans for Mothers Day, in which I was definately secondary:

DS: Dad, what are we doing on Sunday?
DH: You mean Mother’s Day? We’re taking mom out and being nice to her.
DS: Uh…
DH: Let me guess, your GF is going to be in town.
DS: Yes, it’s a coincidence. Can she stay here?
DH: Sure!

oh my gosh at least they can fix it !!! missypie
see people on FB can find out interesting things even in a roundabout way.
I will go into Boston for a while with my hair as I have never had to grow it out since I was two!!! trust me you gotta laugh or you would go insane. My sage Jimmy Buffet says.
eggmom I may have missed it do you like the GF? mind sharing your day withher too?

dte - Actually GF is very sweet and outgoing. She and son are sooo cute together. But it is definately a new era around here to see son as part of a couple and to have GF staying at our house. (She will stay in guest room, I am not worried about that aspect. They are both respectful of parental sensitivities.)

I think it will be nice to have her, but it is a lot to have him move home Saturday and have a house guest Sunday. And I’m not exactly sure how long she is staying as DH forgot to ask that part of the question.

Whew - This thread is always a breath of fresh air. I just came from the “did you meet your spouse in college” thread. (It’s called something like that.) I found myself getting agitated at this one college student…now I feel much calmer.

Okay. Odessagirl has taken 2 finals. Three to go. I can’t wait to have her home. How long will that last? With the messy bathroom, dishes in the sink, etc. Hogging up “my” computer…

I’m with you, eddie! This is my “there are sane people in the world” thread to come to.

I am really going to miss D this summer. She’s gone away in the past, but that’s been for like 3-6 weeks. Now it really feels like she is gone for good. At least it’s only a short drive over though.

I’ll be happy that the messy bathroom and dishes in the sink are at her apartment!

I agree! I was on a thread yesterday where someone gave about the most stupid, trite advice I’ve ever read…but rather than attacking him/her, I just moseyed back to this thread!

Those of you with kids struggling to pass certain CS classes, google this:
“The Perils of JavaSchools” “Joel Spolsky”
for this guy’s insight into CS course difficulty.

It wasn’t anyone with whom I was familiar, from this or any other threads. But it did sound like an adult who should have known better. So back to my happy place!

I’m afraid to post on any of the other threads.

We go through two gallons of milk about every five days with just H and I. We will double that when S2 comes home. To be fair, I cook with milk a lot (mashed potatoes, puddings, etc.) in addition to everybody just drinking it all the time.

Sabaray, I think your D will do fine. S1 didn’t have particular difficulty with the CS courses. I think one advantage of their school is they teach technology from a somewhat liberal arts perspective and don’t have a wash-out mentality.

I’m with Spolsky. If a student doesn’t understand recursion and pointers, she has no business getting a Computer Science degree. The sooner she is weeded out from that major, the better.

Just read the Spolsky article. WOW, must send this to S1!! Am realizing once again how deep he got to go with this stuff in HS.

S1 sings the praises of Haskell these days. It’s a functional language, but that is up his alley and he has been doing and publishing some interesting stuff with it. UChicago has swtiched their honors CS course from Java to Python to Haskell over the past couple of years.

I agree the other threads are a little spooky.
Sabaray - my d also has a huge presentation today. I hope it goes well. She spent 12 hours in her studio yesterday putting finishing touches on it. A pro is coming up from the big city to do a critique - never an easy thing when up til college she has received nothing but oohs, aaahhs, prizes and awards for her creative output.

S2 has his last exam today. I am scared to death they are going to lock him out of his dorm room, all of his friends will have left, and he will be homeless. I guess if worst comes to worst we can call is 89 year old grandmother to drive two hours to go pick him up. He probably would prefer to sleep on the sidewalk for a couple of days.

S1 got his new work email today. That makes it real. He has an exam tomorrow but the professor will take the higher of the mid-term or final and he had a B on the mid-term, so that’s a freebie. Then one more final, a short paper, and done! Ironically, a student in his high school class was murdered by another student (both male seniors) about two weeks before his high school graduation. Just so sad for everybody.
