Modadunn - My Odessagirl is also a doodler. She would doodle during class and it would help her remember. She could later look at a doodle, and remember exactly what was being said by teacher at the time. I don’t understand it at all. She does have ADD, so maybe that had/has something to do with it. These crazy kids…I know she still does it, even in college.

Who wouldn’t??? :)

So, 13 days after surgery, doc has cleared me for all activities – exercising & weight machines: yeah!; golf: yeah!; yard work: drat! Oh well, I guess the fun stuff is the reward for the other stuff.

still take it easy docs dont really know.
D1 did well 4 A’s and a B. whatever that comes out to. no laundry done. lost her new contacts.
Had D2’s confirmation yesterday, catered, friends company cleaned the house, friends two sons 's did the gardens. (paid them) and I am still exhausted! She was happy the important part.
I just want to keep up the help in spring cleaning. maybe one room at a time.
D2 is having a hard time in Honors chemistry this quarter, any suggestions? she goes to extra help all the time. only B in HS she has ever gotten. She had one Bin middle. she is rather freaking, because she is looking at a B or C

countingdown - I’ll send him over right away. He is still a trainee, but will try very hard …

Now, what am I bid for DH? He left work early today to continue installation of stovetop. At some point in that process, he decided that what he really needed to do was pull the adjacent oven out of the wall so he could see the wiring and gas connections back there. So he did. And made S help.

Now we have no working oven (it is sitting in middle of kitchen floor) and no working stove. (it is sitting in countertop, but not connected).

There is no money in our budget for a new oven. (what was he thinking?)

to be continued…

Out of desperation, Son applied at Albertsons, where he used to work. It’s an on-line application with a Unicru personality test. When he filled out the app it asked if he had ever worked for Albertson’s before. He said yes, and it thanked him for his application. He went into the store today to follow up and they said they didn’t have his appication. The manager said to redo the app and say he HASN’T worked for the company before because the on-line application automatically DQs you if you say you’ve worked for the company before.

Isn’t that incredibly odd?

MP - Bizzaro

ShawSon (with the help of ShawWife and ShawCousin) did a major mitzvah this week. ShawSon’s best friend is at a very strong university. He’s quite bright (not brilliant) but has found classes less than challenging. According to ShawSon, he was reading over 1000 pages per night of scifi/fantasy books (no exaggeration). It turned out that he missed the last 3 weeks of class and then finals. ShawWife suggested that ShawSon sit down with him and they drafted emails to each of his professors explaining what happened (somehow – he does have some serious food allergies that make him completely dysfunctional) and 3 of the 4 are letting him make up the exam in June. The fourth is going to treat it as if he’s dropped a course. So, three exams and he’ll be in good standing.

Home from the cabin where it was chilly and rainy and now today was in the 90’s and very humid! Crazy!
D1 just left to return for her last week of college . Graduation is next weekend. We went shopping for a graduation dress and sandals for her and had success at Black & White store. She still gets upset that her weight is still higher than she wants it but only she can fix that! Next weekend will bring lots of tears!

D2 just got her final grades. She will leave her university with a 4.0 for the year. I am so very proud of her for working hard and not letting the difficulties derail her. She is all set for the new transfer University and is actually excited in her quiet way!
Supposed to start her job on Wednesday but I’m not holding my breath!

Wow, northminn! Good for D2!! All those difficulties she endured and still came throught with a 4.0! Great news!!
Shawbridge - Food allergies that allow him to read 1000+pp/night yet not show up for class? Well, that’s a new one on this school nurse.

shawbridge, if I read your story correctly, your son’s friend essentially decided to drop out of college three weeks before the end of the year, reportedly out of boredom (which we all realize is not the real problem since any student understands the implications of such a decision unless they are mentally ill). Your son convinced him to go back and take the finals (if allowed) so he wouldn’t end up with a report card filled with F’s for the semester, which keeps more options open for him and wastes less of his parents’ money. It sounds like he is going through a rough time.

NM, congrats on your D’s grades and have fun at graduation next week-end.

NM, congrats to your D. I hope someone at that school is gnashing their teeth (and chastising the coaches of your Ds sport) for letting her get away.

Anyone heard from CardinalFang lately?

…but apparently found doing the WORK or just showing up challenging, at least for the last three weeks, right? Sounds a little familiar to me. (I like to say that only the boring can be bored and have spent most of my life saying to McSon: “who are you being about it?” when offered this kind of complaint ;)

Shawbridge, has he ever been dx’d with ADHD? Just a hunch your son might wish to pursue. The 1,000 pp of sci fi sounds “hyperfocus” to me, and the not-engaging-in-class but-bright sounds a little executive dysfunction-ish/inattentive. But maybe I am seeing everything through that lens, given McSon’s recent dx (eg. if you have a hammer everything looks like a nail!)

At any rate, I hope he finds a way to make use of this second chance the Shaws+ have helped him get!

Ain’t that the truth?

Son does not have ADHD and mostly I conclude this because attentional issues do not interfere with his success in the classroom or out of it. Having two others who tend to lose track of time, have difficulty managing projects and maintaining attention and easy distractibility etc etc, his ability to manage time with such skill actually makes me jealous. He does not procrastinate and if I tell him to do something, even if he doesn’t do it in the moment, it gets done. In all honesty, it’s a little annoying. When he was young, he used to tell me to pick him up or that things started about 20 or so minutes before they did just so I wouldn’t be late. He also learned to leave me notes when he needed something so I wouldn’t forget.

So this morning, after planting a few more pots and watering my plants to save them from the 90+ degrees of yesterday I took all his bedding and towels and put them in those space bags for the summer. I love those things although I have a tendency to overstuff them slightly. But it’s amazing what those things can do to a down comforter!!

I’ve also heard about a semi-girlfriend at school. She’s pre-med and due to my sleuthing on facebook I see that she is really quite beautiful. Go Son! They aren’t anything official and as we all know, summer can make a heart grow distant just as much as it can grow fonder. So, we’ll see.

S is going down to a local school where a friend of his from NY goes to school. He’ll spend the night and then I will take him to the airport tomorrow. Apparently we are also storing some of his stuff over the summer, which is fine by me. In fact, I wish I knew someone who lived out east that was close enough for S to do the same thing!

As for Shawson’s friend… Not exactly Dr Phil friendly in that he chose the behavior but fails to have the consequences. However when the behavior costs his parents 25K a semester, I can understand how it would be worth the effort.

Well, it has been a busy couple of days and I’m back to eat my words.

D has decided that she doesn’t hate engineering quite that much. I think when she looked at the balance sheet and weighed what she’d be giving up it made an impact. Also nothing like a talk with a good friend who helps you work through all of it. So engineering it is. I suggested rebalancing her workload a bit as well so hopefully she’ll look into that. Why take 18 credits next term when you don’t have to?

Moda, I like that term…“sleuthing”. My kids refer to it as “creeping”. Shawbridge, your son is a very good friend. I wish every child could have a friend like your son!

Hey Sabaray - Sounds like she’s happy with the decision - good for her. 18 engineering credits? A shiver runs down my spine…

Hi Missypie. Haven’t posted because I haven’t had much to say. Congratulations to all the graduates, and those who posted great grades.

Fang Jr’s going to be taking a class at Stanford this summer, and living on campus, with coaching help. Hope it works out.

woody, next term wouldn’t be all engineering credits- she had always struggled with wanting more humanities courses and happily found a minor that she is interested in that incorporates more humanities courses. Still in the e-school, but the politics and policies of science and technology instead of how to build a circuit board (or whatever it is she does!). This past year she took a total of 36 credits- only 3 of those credits were non-engineering. A tough year that she survived. I think a big part of it is that she’s afraid. But, she has a good prof for this summer’s math course, her friend will help her if she needs it, and one course instead of 6 plus a semester long design project will make a big difference in how she does.

I’m just glad she worked though it on her own. When I think back to my own college experience, I wanted to be a French major. My father did not think that was practical, so I ended up a History major and on to law school. Still wish I’d been a French major. I don’t want her to make that mistake.

CF, sounds like Fang Jr. has a good summer planned out. I hope he enjoys being at Stanford.

sabaray, sometimes just knowing she has a choice can be energizing. I love the J-term option at your D’s school to get in an extra class, if needed, plus it sounds like she has some AP credits.

S2 has no APs and no J-term option so he has zero flexibility in his schedule, which includes 17 credit hours next semester (physics, calculus, statics, geology, and English). I don’t even see an elective until spring of his third year. If he slips behind next year he will have to make a choice between job or school next summer, which I don’t like, since I’m hoping he gets substantative job experience after both his sophomore and junior years.

At S1’s graduation, some student graduated within four years with a triple major in engineering, math, and Chinese (and he was not Asian). Some of those kids are just inhumanly smart and/or driven. Both S1 and S2 fall into the “good enough” camp when it comes to grades. Not a single one of S1’s friends graduated with any type of honors or asterix by their name in the program and all but one of them has an outstanding job lined up for after graduation (investment banking, trading floor, consulting, etc.). The one without a job is going to grad school, which is what he wanted.

Analyst, Thanks for that reminder on J-term. I had completely forgotten about that. I’ll remind her to look into that. And you are right about the inhumanly smart- I was in awe of so many of these students’ accomplishments. I think those who have jobs in this economy have achieved the biggest accomplishment of all.
