Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Just watched Boston Med. Usually summer TV is somewhat of a wasteland, but I’m enjoying this show.

nurses were dissapointed didnt show the unit much. lovely couple, I remember them. I loved the older couple too.
I wish I had made chores a routine thing in our house. I also wanted the kids to focus on school. but now when you need them to kick in they arent used to it. We dont have cleaning staff etc… so its me and my H. I have recently started to pay for vacuming (which is hard for me.) I dont want to make everything an issue as it is only going so-so with D1.
I will let you know how Lady GaGA goes, its a B’day present for D2 as I was not in shape last year to do anything special for her 16th.

Strike settled…woohoo! Great weekend ahead!

That’s great, NM!

We were just talking about Lady Gaga this morning. Have fun, dte! Looking forward to the report. This week my husband got tix for Bare Naked Ladies in August - a family favorite.

Happy Fourth everyone!

NM- Glad to hear that.

dte- I would love to see Lady Gaga. Have fun! I’m glad you are able to go to her show.

My kids have chores, more in the summer than during the school year. We have paid D to do some “projects” such as paint the basement. We either would have had to pay to have it done or (most likely) done it ourselves. Paying S to cook is a good idea as he can contribute toward the computer repair.

ShawD went to a She and Him concert (Zooey Deschanel and someone Ward) last night in Boston. I picked them up and they were cracking up at some of the Lady Gaga audience they had run into. One girl was dressed in a bikini made from an American flag she’d taken from a farm in Vermont and was telling her friends about all of the people who asked to have their pictures taken with her. Another couple was dressed in the yellow tape caution tape police use. It took ShawD and friend a while to figure out why there were so many weird people were doing wandering around Boston. Did you see an exciting audience?

NM, great news about the strike settlement. I’m sure your husband will have a better weekend.

I enjoyed Boston Med last night. I confess to feeling very tearful over the young couple but was so glad to see a chubby baby one year later. I wish there were more programs like this one and fewer of the “Survivor” type. But that’s just me.

Am ready for the weekend. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long last two weeks at work. Then some vacation time and onward ho!

Happy 4th of July, everyone!!
The weather here will be HOT. I think we’ll be out on the boat all weekend.
D’s BF from college will arrive this afternoon for the weekend. Should be fun…

Sabarary, how did your office take it when you gave notice? I think starting a new job will be very exciting for you. I should have a pretty easy July at work and am looking forward to that.

We had a frustrating couple of days tearing the house apart looking for S1’s high school diploma. The work visa requirements for Brazil seem to entail a drip campaign of wanting new documents. I had given up and called the school to get a replacement and the school said they don’t keep diplomas, only transcripts. S1 confirmed that yes, they need a diploma (he has already sent transcripts). Anyway, we knew we couldn’t have thrown it away so back to more searching and finally found it deeply buried in a box in the attic. There are a couple of other pieces of information he is still waiting to get but they are reportedly on the way. The process is slowly moving forward.

In good news, the phone arrived and he loves it. After all of our agonizing about phone contracts, it turns out the company pays for phone and data bills while on site with a client, which he will be 95% of the time, so no big deal after all. The compensation structure definitely rewards being on the road.

Analyst, your activities looking for S1’s diploma remind me of all the work I have yet to do at home. I must say that your reports of the road ahead are really helping me keep D’s documents organized for when she faces those requests (which hopefully she will).

They were not jumping with joy when I gave my notice and asked if there were changes they could make to induce me to stay, which there are not. But happily they did not escort me from the office, which I have known to happen at other firms I have worked at when a notice was given. I like my boss very much as a person but our work styles are not always in sync. I will be glad not to be commuting and also glad to have some autonomy in my work again.

woody, I see you ventured onto the marriage thread. How very brave! I have been reading that one every day just like this one. The Days of Our Lives indeed.

I read the marriage thread every day, also.

^
Same here.

Same here! (In fact he’s already here.)

Marriage thread? Is that the “Marriage Crisis” one? Don’t think I have enough time to try to keep current with that.

D is visiting a state school with her boyfriend’s family today and really likes it. She also really likes another state school that would give her instate tuition. It would be *so nice *to get by with paying instate tution!!!

missypie, that’s great that your D really likes some of the instate options. It sounds like she has a positive and open-minded attitude toward the college search!

It’s still a bit scary though…next week we are visiting four OOS schools, two of which would be a pretty big financial stretch. Even though we’re spending all this money for a big college visit trip, it would be great if she didn’t fall in love with those two schools. (The four schools we’re visiting are very different from the ones she’s visited so far.)

Question for anyone who is familiar with southern Minnesota:

It looks like we’ll be travelling north from Iowa into southern Minnesota at the beginning of Labor Day weekend. We would like to stay in a nice (upscale) hotel/resort for a few days before resuming college visiting on Mon-Tues. Ideally, we’d like to find a lakeside hotel with good exercise facilities and decent restaurants in the vicinity.

We aren’t familiar with Minnesota. Does anyone have any suggestions?

missypie, it’s great that you are showing her lots of options, though I agree that it is risky that she’ll fall in love with the most expensive ones. In addition to the financial differential among schools, it’s also challenging to come up with a list that includes an appropriate range (and avoid ‘falling in love with reaches’ syndrome).

I think the trips alone sound like a geat mother-daughter bonding experience. We only got to visit two schools with S2 and he already had his mind made up so the second visit was just a pro forma exercise because it was on the way home. I didn’t go on any visits with S1. H did the one college visit with him. Neither boy was into the tours or casting a wide net thing and I definitely felt cheated. I love following other people’s college searches.

I am giving some advice to my brother’s son who is a rising senior. He was pretty set on one school so the best I can do is get him to consider a second option–both in-state publics.
