 indeed! I suppose going away to college is a chance for a start-over. No one knows you there.

Well, if not for hs grad, maybe in preparation for that 20th high school reunion? ;)

 indeed! I suppose going away to college is a chance for a start-over. No one knows you there.

Well, if not for hs grad, maybe in preparation for that 20th high school reunion? ;)

I knew someone who got a nosejob as a graduation gift. She was in my class

D moved into her dorm early (Wednesday) for orientation yesterday and today. I’m glad I paid the extra $ because I cannot imagine the chaos that will ensue this weekend when the rest of the Summer freshman move in. She’s settled now, we just need to get a 20 ft cable for the TV to wrap around the room and even MORE closet hangers (see below)
.

We went to Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target. It was so cute going into these stores, you can tell who is a freshman just by looking at their shopping cart(s)!

We purchased this nifty item at Bed Bath & Beyond! No tools required, unlike the over-the-door full length mirror that we are still in need of a screwdriver to put together. [Bed Bath & Beyond - Heavyweight Double Hang Closet Rod](<a href=“Bed Bath & Beyond | The Best Deals Online: Furniture, Bedding, Rugs, Kitchen Essentials & Moree”>Bed Bath & Beyond | The Best Deals Online: Furniture, Bedding, Rugs, Kitchen Essentials & Moree) ~ hence, the need for more hangers! By far this was her most favorite item we purchase for the dorm!

JSM… that’s a keeper, especially for my son! Think about it, boys don’t even have dresses so double hanging always works for them!! Will head up there today or maybe tomorrow depending on how this day unfolds. H and D just got back from their Yellowstone road trip. some fabulous pictures and they ended up driving all night to get home because once you’re in the middle of the midwest, you are in the middle of nowhere!!!

closet rods? #theoryson:whats a hanger?

OK, so when I told D she could reinvent herself for college, I was thinking more along the lines of a new haircut…silly me! Haven’t heard about that kind of grad gift around here but I’m sure it happens! I think S-I-L got a nose job for her grad though…

I too have started collecting ‘stuff’ for D’s dorm room even though we won’t know for sure until late August final details, made more difficult by the fact they have both twin & XL at the school based on the diff dorms! I’ve bought a few things in anticipation for an XL just in case…

My big ‘aha’ purchase, 99 cent store (at least in our area) has those 3M removable hangers and poster tape thing for only 99cents! Also they had some velcro cable ties. I’ve bought a few since they are at least a few bucks in the regular stores plus so many campuses have restrictions on tape/nails etc.

double hung? CBBBlinkerS: What am I supposed to hang up? All my stuff is right where I can find it – thrown on a chair, on the floor, or. occasionally, in a drawer.

We’re with #theorymom and CBBBlinker. ShawbridgeSon thinks the floor is the closet. What would you use hangers for? He does have a suit that we bought him for Moot Court competition when he outgrew mine (in one year from 43 Long to 46 Long – my wife measured his chest 3 times and then he said, “Mom, my chest isn’t going to change size if you measure it again”) but we hang that in my closet. ShawbridgeSon: “Do you have to hang t-shirts, gym shorts or cargo pants?” Beyond that, he’ll bring a couple of nice shirts and, only after we suggest it, a nice pair of pants. I’m actually thinking of sending him with fewer clothes than he owns just so he and his roommate will be able to find the floor.

Add my D to the list. I was pleased when she dug through the layers on her floor and moved them to more appropriate places for her grad party. It appears that the layers are reappearing but not quite so deep. (yet :)) I truly wonder if she can possibly change her stripes once she has a roommate. Oh well, not really much I can do about it at this point.

Northernwoods, DH reported that when he visited S1 on a business trip to Chicago, that the general state of messiness and clothes on the floor has not changed since leaving home. He did keep it to his side of the room, however. I can vouch that all shirts were on hangers on move-in day, however. ;)

I have also discovered NEW, CLEAN, STILL-WRAPPED SOCKS in the dirty clothes he sent home at the end of the year. These are the same socks he begged me to send him in January when it was -17 outside and he needed warm feet.

Also found the fully-loaded first-aid/OTC meds kit untouched. “Oh, I didn’t know you packed that, Mom!” Yes, S1, and showed you where in the closet it was…right next to the soda and popcorn!!

I think those “emergency care packages” are going to be replaced with “if you really think it’s an emergency, take the bus to Target and buy it.” The Target is far enough from campus that it will take some actual thought into whether he needs said purchase.

Just some precautionary tales from an '08 parent…don’t over buy.

It’s the thing we use around here instead of doing any kind of folding whatsoever except for underwear and socks practically. However, hitting the laundry hamper is another thing entirely. It’s squarely in the most convenient and obvious place. The clothes are near it, around it and some are even barely hanging on to the edge, but it’s clear it would be full if he actually used it.

I think I had read all of the beds at son’s school are xlong and is why I got the mattress pad and sheets… it was pretty clear the inventory on the xlong might fly out this time of year. We already agreed that we’d send bulkier things later on, bring them parents weekend, or he could grab them thanksgiving. He only wears the first 6 things on either side of his closet. Seriously, sometimes I rotate his t-shirts just so I can see some variety.

HA, this is my son exactly, and I do the same thing! I suspect he’ll wear every scrap of clothing at college, though, since he’ll have to make a special trip to do the laundry… and actually see a load through from start to finish without letting it sit in the dryer.

Has anyone else considered replacing the closet door with a dryer door, just so your kid will know where to find the clean clothes? :D

DDs are all registered for classes and well oriented! Thier schedules make my head spin but they will be in good company. School assigns them to cohorts of kids in the same majors so that they will have built in study buddies/support systems

JSM hope your D is all settled and happy.

geek-mom lol on the tassles comment! My neice is darling brilliant sweet and 14. She just had a nose job on tuesday. Not a grad gift just passing on a family tradition ::eek:: her mom and grandmother had them at around 13. Some kind of nasal dismorphic disorder but in other ways the fam is relatively grounded. I don’t get it.

So is the haiku thread revived??

It’s on life support
pining for a friendly bump

yes girl here had a breast enhancement. So rare here was the talk of the town. Felt bad for her. In HS boys said “your mom is hotter than you” mom had the full complement. quite beautiful but defiantely alot of work done. All this with my history just seems silly to me.
returned from D’d college orientation. she seems happy.

Graduation is this morning (is ours the last one???) THEN I can sit back and catch up on the 20 pages or so of posts that I have missed out on.

D got a letter asking where the final transcript is - gee she just took her regents on Wednesday and she won’t get the final transcript until that score comes in (that is NY for you!). D is jealous of the future classmates that have been out for a month already! She started her nanny job this week, comes home exhausted after watching two very energetic little boys all day - getting back some of her own for sure!

Did anyone hear of the BBB program where you buy what you need at your local store, but you pick it up at the store closest to the campus that you are going to? Wish I had known about that a month ago, might just need to use the fifth wheel in August lol!!!

Gotta like the closet rod!! The closets at COW are totally open (at least the ones in the dorms that D has stayed in), so we got a tension rod to go across and will tie dye some sheets for it…

Congratulations, Rachacha!

And yes, the BB&B pack and ship (or whatever it’s called) works wonderfully.

We did the BB&B pack and ship and it worked out very well. We picked everything up Wednesday. There were a few things we didn’t need and it was no problem sorting through and taking out before checking out. IMPORTANT: Save ALL those BB&B coupons even though they are expired!! They are still accepted!!

Hi everyone! I’m glad it hasn’t been too chatty around here, so I’m more lost! No enhancements here (but there was a news item on tv somewhere about breast enhancement being a big “gift” for grads), but S2 did get a haircut, and I can see his eyes–does that count? The sun is beginning to shine again here in the NW, thank goodness! The rescue golden is settling in, though he doesn’t like to be alone, so he’s a velcro dog. All 3 sons are staying up late and sleeping in late, and all seem happy with that arrangement (except me, a devout a.m. person, who grits teeth).

S1 leaves for a 3 week trip to Israel Aug. 1, which will be the appointed day to begin thinking about S2’s dorm room needs. I think we’ll buy most of his things when we get to Cleveland. I’m excited to learn about his dorm, roommate scene etc. He doesn’t even register for classes until he gets on campus, but the Conservatory regimen I suspect is pretty rigid. Our one vacation is mid July for 10 days, and I can’t believe June is almost over.

It’s lovely to not be stressing about acceptances, isn’t it?

^^ Yes! It’s hard to believe that hoping my son would get cracking on his college essays was over a year ago now! Not so hard to believe that he didn’t actually finish writing them until application deadline day!!

Now, however, it’s “I’m 18 and I will be on my own in the fall, so why can’t this independence mode start sooner so that I don’t have to be accountable to you in any way, shape or form. But oh, can you do my laundry and buy my favorite cereal? Family dinner? I’ve almost forgotten about those because it’s so much cooler to catch a bite with my friends. Didn’t you know that this will be the last time we can order Jimmy Johns on Friday, June 26 for a year if not a lifetime?”

I seriously want to kill him.

This is where my sister’s words of their need to separate comes in. They act just jerky enough to that by the time fall rolls around, instead of holding on, I’ll be saying, “don’t let the screen door hit you in the butt on your way out!!”
