Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

yes rain, rain, and more rain. should be better for the 4th!

Oh #TM… Time is seriously flying for you! At what point will you be able to have more than two days to breath JUST FOR YOURSELF?? Son got his physical today. He was a little bummed. Whereas his pediatrician always bumped him up to the next round number in height, the GP rounded down to 6ft. :(. He’s also lost 10 pounds since last fall! totally not fair since I was the one who found it!!

I think being one of the first to leave sure beats being one of the last! Good luck, let go and hopefully you’ll enjoy the ride! :-)

Missypie - I think we are married to the same man!

Can’t wait to meet up with you and the other WPI parents!

Blissfully enjoyed the little cloudburst we had yesterday - it felt so nice to just stand in the rain!

WPI parents, I’m confused - is school already starting, or are you going for registration?

We have very little relative to college going on here. D realized (with prodding from me) that the courses she had hoped to take would be too many credits so she sent an email off to her advisor who confirmed that she should not sign up for an intensive language class. She naively thought that she would have enough credits without that but I pointed out that she would need to find another class. So she now has found another class. In her case, none of the classes are full and she has priority registration for all the freshman because of her scholarship. I did point out to her that she needs to contact the music department about auditioning for her selected ensemble. Maybe that will happen on her two days off this week. The sad thing is that she really was looking forward to the language class because she wants to do some study abroad and will need to finish that up. Second semester schedule will have the identical problem so it’s either summer abroad studying the language (which she might enjoy) or waiting until next year with her language getting rustier.

Waiting for AP scores but D says they won’t change any of her course sign ups so we’re not paying college board any additional money.

Purchasing/packing spreadsheet isn’t really moving and we’ve got to get busy shopping. Oh well.

Sharonohio–I am afraid I will never enter the stage of having a spreadsheet for shopping! Lists are high tech for me. But despite my chaotic style we have make good progress on the “stuff”. It is so different to be doing this with a girl. She actually likes thinking about these things, while with my son it was like pulling teeth. Which reminds me I need to look into the wisdom teeth timing issue. Yikes. Lots of details and time is flying.

On the language question: some colleges have a set up where she could use the language lab or join language tables in the dininig hall or go to dinner at a language house to keep her language skills active. So she doesn’t need to be taking a class to keep up some familiarity if she does a little exploration once she is on campus.

If it is, we’re going to be about a month and a half late!!! LOL! New Student Orientation is August 23. I believe #TM is leaving home soon for an extended family vist/trip before dropping off #TS at WPI. The (online) course registration deadline is today.

Will need to remind S2 about language tables. He has pretty much passed out of his langague requirements based on AP, but he wants to keep his Spanish going, particularly speaking fluency. That would be a great way to do this! He is going to start another language in college, but has also expressed an interest in taking a couple of Spanish courses. I am glad to see he is not planning to dump five years of study and finally getting through the learning curve!

CBB is correct
We are packing and wrapping things up as if we were heading off to school because we won’t be home again before he goes.
Trying to get the school to bill me at the moment. I will be unable to get any communication - will be in Northern Ontario with no electricity, in a cabin on a lake, so I need to arrange all my bill paying for the next 3 months. I have to set up automatic payments. I can’t wait to have a little time to relax!

Have a great relaxing vacation, #theorymom! I’ll see you in 8 weeks (by the way, we’ll be staying in the same hotel).

We are stressed to the MAX at the moment. D2 just found out that her housing for next year was destroyed by fire. School not sure where they will place the kids as housing is already short. Trying to get answers ASAP. I hate waiting for phone calls. :(

YIKES! I would be stressed, too! I had a boyfriend from another college whose dorm burned down; they were placed in homes (it was a small school with no other options). Wishing you the best…and maybe a nice glass of wine.

Note that no one here has breathed a word about finding out their kid’s AP scores. On the AP forum there is a thread on 2009 scores that is 21 pages long.

What? Have they sent scores yet? I thought mid-july.

Son has been working and hanging out with friends, and we are quickly seeing how it will be with him away at school because he is here so rarely. Tonight he has promised his little sister some quality “cave” time - which is their sibling speak for a movie and maybe some video/computer games. She is going to miss him like crazy.

Finally got some “parent” info from S’s school today. It was like Christmas for me! Basically it was some brochures and other stuff saying, “get ready… your bill will arrive any day!”

So sorry to hear about the damaged dorm NorthMN… Doesn’t she go early for sports? Were they to move into their regular dorm then or …? Talk about a scramble. But at least she wasn’t living there when it happened. (A big silver lining in my book).

A few years ago my neighbors son went to Univ of Tampa and they were having a huge dorm shortage. They ended up renting up floors in a hotel, like Holiday Inn, for a semester!

Thank goodness this fire happened during the summer, for a number of reasons! At least now the college will have a little time to figure things out.

If you pay $8, you can find out the AP scores on July 1st, but in the 21 pages of the thread there were about 19 pages of speculating when they’ll really be released which, I guess, was a few days ago. I let poor younger D call for her one AP score…she got a 97 in the class and a 1 on the exam. But here in Top 10% Land (Texas), the weighted 97 (which I think turns into a 109.5 in her GPA) may have helped her more than a high score on the AP exam.

Apparently there is a number you can call to get the scores…told D about it but haven’t heard back if she got her score or not. I didn’t see mention of a cost but I didn’t read all 20+ pages of it either!

Clearly those ending jr. year care a whole lot more about AP scores than our grads! However, my d accessed her scores because they were already posted on her UC Berkeley website. Good thing, because her calculus score was a major surprise and she now has to redo her class schedule because she doesn’t have to take it. OTOH, she is stressed out about what she should take. You can’t win them all. AP scores can be gotten from the collegeboard for $8 as of a couple days ago or they’ll be sent home in a week or so.

Son called for the scores yesterday. Except for one part of the Physics exam, he did well. And that calculus class he darn near failed? 5. Kid makes me nuts.

Same hotel? cool fireflyscout!
We’ll go have a non-virtual margaurita!
