Back from a short vacation ready to get everything ready for the “big move”.

Graduation gift - a week in DisneyWorld.

Room mate - won’t know anything for the next couple of weeks.

I love the idea of the shadowbox for all the graduation “bling”…if I find anything sites with ideas I’ll post back.

Mom’s wisdom on the car…fantastic.

Insurance for the laptop can be a rider on your home owner’s. Check also to see if the dorm belongings are covered.

No overnight guests…love it!!!

JSM - yes it was hot that week. wow

Oh those thank you cards another thing to nag them about…

D just got her book list…oh my. Thanks for the idea of buying elsewhere…DD said “But mom what if it is a specific edition the teacher wants me to read?” Any ideas here?

Congrats to the grads, prayers and thoughts for all who are under the weather, yes Margaritas for all. I think I’m up to date.

^^ Too funny! And you’re right on both counts: It should be posterity, but my fingers typed while my mind must have been on hiatus. A Freudian typo?

Heading to the cabin for the weekend in a little bit. Need to relax and quit thinking about D2 leaving for school. Still nothing definitive on where she will be housed due to fire. That makes me really nervous. Will try to sit on the dock with a glass of wine and reflect on how glad I am the fire wasn’t while she was there, think of how much she has grown this past year and how glad I am that HS is over! Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Fourth!

we will be out of any type of communication loop by the time S’s roommate(s) is assigned. Enrollment is so high this year, we expect he will end up tripled - which will be a bummer (though he probably won’t care) Me, I think they should refund some room money when they do that. LOL No idea which dorm either. I hope his other mates don’t already set up a friendship before he gets a chance to get involved.

One of my old dogs is dying I am sitting with him as much as possible. He is not in pain.
And one of the pups - 8 weeks today, fractured her tooth so has to go in for extraction surgery tomorrow
And at least 2 of them are leaving for new homes this weekend :-(

This has been a hellacious spring. It just seems to never end.

On top of which I feel extremely stressed out with the seemingly endless list of details I have to take care of in less than a week. Hair coloring was postponed today until next week, hoping I will be in a better frame of mind to sit there for the process by then. Houseguests arriving tomorrow (may see if another friend can put them up instead)

I know things will settle down, they HAVE to, and at least I am healthy. Anyone heard from downtoearth?

D’s getting her wisdom teeth out in under two weeks. The idea doesn’t seem to bother her.

On the laptop front, it’s getting replaced. After another day and several more freezes and a windows reinstall it froze again while reinstalling another windows update. Then we had to update the bios and in the midst of the video driver bios update, during a reboot, the disk drive started spinning non-stop and loud, the log off screen took forever and then the disk drive stopped spinning and I was left with a cursor blinking on the upper left of a totally black screen. Was told to power the system down, hit the power button and nothing happened; held the power button for several mins and nothing happened. Unplugged from wall, removed the battery and finally it shut down. When the Dell tech told me I would need to pull the memory which requires taking screws off the bottom I told him that was it. Called customer service and they have put a new order in (yeah at least get microsoft upgrade for free now) and I told them I expected something for my two days of wasted time on a non-working system. I have never received a system that sick.

D did some room cleaning today or at least so she said. Haven’t looked in the room yet. She’s getting rid of old stuffed animals and the like maybe a bit too much. We’ll see.

If they’re sending you a replacement machine, I hope that’s a happy resolution. For what it’s worth, what the Dell guy said to do (open the bottom, remove and re-seat the memory) is not bad advice for weird, random-seeming problems – nor is it very complicated to do. Bummer of a way to start with an expensive new machine, though, and crashing in the middle of any kind of BIOS update is nerve-wracking.

All you folks with class schedules and book lists, I’m just a little bit envious. It seems that incoming Mudders choose nothing but the topic of their first-semester Humanities course. And geek_son is presently resisting the idea of “more school” beginning in the fall, so he refuses even to look at the list of topics. Most college-related topics are more or less off limits right now. I figure I’ll give him the Fourth weekend, then re-introduce him to reality.

On the brighter side, he just got his license, with flying colors. :)

Geekmom, Congrats to Geekson! D finally got her permit and has been practicing so that she WILL have her license before school starts! She actually now wants to learn to drive a stickshift too (OK, so where was this desire back 2 years ago??)!

D is STILL working on cleaning her room…sharing a room the size of hers with another person is gonna be fascinating come fall! She doesn’t have her orientation until Aug so we’ll see what she ends up with for classes. Should be much easier from how we choose back in the dark ages of checking print outs of classes and having them crossed off just as your number came up to register!

Hope everyone has a happy & safe 4th weekend!

TM-I have been lurking thanks for asking. All the computer talk confuses me, so nothing to add. I wouldn’t know a cursor from a whatever. All very interesting. Went to D’s orientation, she is happily planning out her courses. Wants to know AP scores as it may satisfy some requirements. D2 went to a journalism conference and got one of 4 awards this after calling us at D1’s orieintation crying “they are all seniors I am a sophmore I don’t know as much as them”
It was nice being away and forgetting for a while. I wish I could dissapear too. Have a great time you deserve it.
preparing to be laid up for a bit, managed to work some but it was difficult as my manager told people when I asked her not to. So Iworked when I could, but the fear of having people come up to me and me crying was too much.I work in such an intensive environment, one must keep their act together. Didn’t know who knew.I work with many people. I wish sometimes people would not “decide” what it is you need. anyway… Glad I held off for my D’s oreintation. bought myself a nice overnight bag and will get a nice bathrobe. OR next week.
Feel bad about the fire glad your D was not there. It would be nice to know what to expect without all the complication.
sorry about the puppies going, the new owners will so happy and excited we love our big guy wo we still call the “puppy” we keep in contact with his breeder still
Continued wishes for a great summer, preparation. etc…

Miss all of you - it’s hard to feel as engaged here when there’s not much to add.

S and I went to Pre-orientation last week, and it was great. He met some other freshman, including one of his roommates AND a very attractive young woman ( ), and has decided to taken classes in the fall that will keep a science major open to him. We saw his dorm room, a triple, and he’s excited, but I’d be horrified! Youth…

Called yesterday and spent the $8 to get the phone results of his AP’s which were his best yet - a 5 on Lit and a 4 on Gov’t, which translates to a full year of required English and PoliSci 1, so he’s heading in with 9 credits and a little flexibility. Hooray.

Now, just trying to 1) get him out of his cave for a little while, 2) have him finish the thank you notes, and 3) have a couple options for his fall schedule since he registers online next week. I admire those of you focusing on the room cleanups!

Downtoearth, I can imagine how difficult it would be when somebody else decided to share YOUR information. Hang in there and think healthy, positive thoughts.

hi everyone! Funny - I’m out of touch for a couple of weeks and when I stop by here, I see we are all doing the same things! Cleaning rooms (not much progress, but there is still hope), thank you notes (I’d say 75% are done), register for class (done… he picked two 8:10am classes… can you say OMG), and finally, we are both coming out of our transition funk. Both my S & I got very sad & weepy during the graduation week. He has since talked to a couple of trusted people and I have tried to keep busy. I know the feelings will come and go but, wow, I didn’t expect it to be so hard.

geek_mom, I didn’t have any problem pulling the memory I just figured if they really thought I should take a screwdriver to a brand new machine that they could just send me a new one. So they created an order for a new one but no delivery date yet (I think they’re bumping the queue) and I’ve told them I expect something for wasting two days of my time with a brand new machine (now to figure out what it is that I want ) FYI, D looked at Mudd and decided I think that it was just too small for her. I think it actually scared her a bit especially since she wants to study biology which really isn’t it’s strongest department. I think they told us they had 8 graduating bio majors the prior year.

Calimom, I think it’s wonderful that your D wants to learn to drive a stick shift. S has no car and his gf’s is a stick. Puts stress on her to drive everywhere. I think he’s leary about learning on her car since it’s kind of old and none of our cars are sticks anymore. I think that stick shifts are more common in CA too and a really useful skill to have.

One of the smartest things we did as far as teaching our kids to drive is the whole stick shift thing. At the time it was because my H had a stick and it just seemed prudent. Son got that car a couple of years ago, and is in high demand for any kind valet work (and gets to drive the coolest cars because of it) and D has been called on to drive a time or two a friend’s car when he umm… shouldn’t.

Ok. On the subject of “it never ends” son went long boarding last night with friends and I got a call at 8:15 saying he’d fallen and hit his head. AND he was feeling sick to his stomach. So we walk into the ER on 8:45 and while they got him in for a head CT right away, once they determined he was truly a bone head, we didn’t get out of there until nearly 1am!! He got road burn on a good part of his back and I swear they let him lay there because no one wanted to clean the dirt out of it. When I asked him what happened, he said, “the board hit sand and stopped. Laws of Physics said I wouldn’t.” He said he knew he was going to go flying so he basically tucked into a fetal position and hoped for the best. What a complete goof. A year ago I might have just given him some tylenol and woke him up every couple of hours, but after that whole Natasha Richardson this past winter, I wasn’t going to take any chances. I wish, however, they would have gotten us in and out of there a little faster, because he will have to be at deaths door to ever go into an ER again. Plus, the nurses weren’t all that cute. :-)

Today of course, he’s starting to get scabby and was actually fairly proud of his wounds before going to a bbq with a bunch of friends. He is slowly beginning to bum his younger sister right out because all of her friends are at their cabins and she is pretty bored and he is never home. Hard to make him stay home for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Oh Modadunn - how scary for you! I’m glad he is doing well. They love to show the scars, don’t they.

When we got the kids a car, we bought a manual because a)we were convinced they would be less distracted (by friends, phones, music, food, whatever) because of the demands of driving a stick and b)it was cheaper! A minor plus is that my D is regarded with some awe by more than a few boys - it’s kindof funny!

Having a fairly relaxing weekend after graduation and grad party last weekend. FIL is back in the hospital. Not looking too good but he is 90! Took D shopping yesterday to start getting a few things for her dorm room and begin the shopping for her starting school in the fall. Did a fair amount but probably still need a couple more trips. Monday she needs to login and register for classes. There are so many that she wants to take that she is having trouble narrowing it down! She also should be able to get her IB exam grades Monday afternoon. So much still to do but it does seem quieter this weekend. I needed it. Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

I wish we had a car with standard transmission to teach our kids on because learning to drive a stick shift is a great skill. Back in college a friend had too much to drink and none of the rest of us knew how to drive her car. We were rescued by a guy we knew, but he wasn’t very happy about it as I recall.

Moda - you did the right thing. Don’t mess around with head injuries. Glad his injuries were minor and mostly just road rash and bragging rights - but I hate long boards - I would request he wear a helmet

We have several “standard” vehicles - still we cannot get S to drive anything, automatic or standard

Best wishes R.Mom for FIL

3 of my puppies went to homes today…sigh good homes but…
And my old dog passed away at home with us yesterday after a very short and sudden illness, not in pain and not in the vet’s tubed and dripped with no one around.

This has been a strange tough spring/summer
