Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Woody: I did the college linen service thing for my D this year. She liked the colors and I like the convenience plus the price was fairly good. We have received the items. Since she will be in Maine I think I’ll need to pick up one more blanket as the fleece blanket that came is fairly thin and she likes to burrow under a lot of covers. All in all I’m happy with the service. Not top of the line by any means but looks like it will last the 4 years and I don’t need much more than that.

We visit family in IL every year and they don’t have internet. Have bought inlaws 2 computers in the last several years, but they didn’t use them much and canceled internet service. My parents have never owned a PC and don’t feel they need one. We were the last family in town to get color TV and cable so I don’t see that changing. In some ways it’s refreshing not to have the computer and it sure forces S to do other things, but after a week or so when we return home I have a lot of email to go through.

D’s classes start on the 8th, she will only have one friend home that long, so we will likely go to visit family in August after the others leave.

RMom, like you I am a planner and not being able to get stuff early makes me crazy! Unfortunately, D’s school has 2 different size beds (twin & xl twin) depending on the dorm you get. So though I’ve bought the xl for now have kept the receipts - just in case! Both she and her roommate are planning to bring brightly colored items, going to look like a rainbow exploded in their room I’m sure! She also got the info on the linen service but part of the fun for me is searching out things so it was too easy to just buy the package! Can you say shopaholic?!

Have now eased into summer here. Recent hs graduate son found a part-time job doing telemarketing. He’s still looking for other work. The gf moved out of state two days after her graduation, so there has been some moping around here.

Roommate assignments will arrive around the beginning of August. I admit to going to BB&B, but without my extremely disinterested son!

home from the hospital went well. I am determined to go to our lake house in two weeks. really looking forward to love that place.
Everyone going away have a great time!

College specific list of forbidden items? Sounds interesting…anything on the list surprising?

Downtoearth… you deserve a respite and truthfully, when I am at our cottage on the lake I am the happiest of anywhere on earth. It rejuvinates and fills me back up. I will hope yours does the same for you and that you get an opportunity to take full advantage.

Weirdest thing on “do no bring” list was light fixture with multiple bulbs.

Down to earth - Great news! Now go and re-energize yourself.

rochestermom - Thanks for the advice1

Modadunn- same thing on Ds list. What about those little white Christmas tree lights??

There is a specific mention of those on our list, Woody. You can’t have “christmas lights” but you can have those tube lights. My daughter had those in her dorm room. More of a girl thing I suppose?

down to earth - I am glad things went well. Have a wonderful time at the lake.

Deja - Last week Target had solid black and solid grey towels on sale and I was tempted to buy for my dis-interested son’s dorm room. BUT the evil mother took over and I decided to give him old towels from our linen closet and to buy new towels for ME!!! I can guarantee that they will not be black and grey. The more I think about this, the more I like this idea. Will probably extend to sheets and bed clothes, too!

not an evil mom thing. practical. d got her dorm assignment-first choice so she is very happy. Now that she has roomates that she can talk to she can sort out what to bring. I think she is in a triple. She is doing well taking care of many things on her own. i will be looking forward to helping her soon.

downtoearth
ahhh - big sigh - you have a reprieve for a little while - enjoy it. Commune with the water and the sun (hope you get some) and the birds and just “feel” it all. It will be rejuvenating. You are in my thoughts. I’ll check in with you in September when we get back

Tube lights?? I’m not picturing those. At D’s school, the Christmas lights are OK – or at least she’s never been told to take them down. I sent her some orange ones for Halloween, too. Extension cords are high on the supply list.

Just back from a trip to NYC with my Ds - saw 6 Broadway musicals and shopped - next month they are going to deliver my credit card statement in a box instead of an envelope. Son and Husband returned from Vienna - sounds like they had a good time and tolerated each other pretty well.

Son was able to log in and see his schedule…so far, only 14 hours and 5 of them are Freshman seminar, swimming (to meet a physical fitness requirement) and choir/voice. That only leaves him 3 “academic” classes…it seems like a light schedule, but it may just be a gift from God, since we have such a fear of him crashing and burning in college.

I’m quite envious of those of you going away to quiet places away from civilization. It sounds wonderful!

DD and I had a fun shopping day last week. We purchased her bedding, towels, new bathrobe, popup hampers, and a few other things. I also purchased a magna cart at Sam’s Club over the weekend based upon a recommendation from someone at CC. I really wanted to buy a couple of closet items as the TJ Maxx type store had a few for great prices, but I had not yet seen the closet so was uncertain about the fit. We didn’t want to wait for two hours to see the dorm room at her orientation. Since her school is only about 1/2 hour away and has ongoing registration we went over yesterday afternoon for a dorm tour. I keep thinking of things we need to purchase. The school has a list online, but of course my CC mind keeps thinking of additional items.

Finally started shopping for D2’s dorm stuff. Found cute shower curtain and hooks and an over the door hook system for her towels. Hooray! It’s a small start but at least we’ve started!

eggmom, this is my second son to go to college, so I’m going to be able to reuse some of those things (minifridge and possibly TV depending on what the roommate can bring, x-tra long twin sheets, etc.). I’ll also give him old towels from our linen closet. I am considering buying him some cheap thin beach towels when they are on clearance, because those will dry out very quickly and I’m not sure how (if?) they will ever air out at school.

One BB&B item I’ve been considering is that adjustable rod to double closet space that someone linked to here. I just wish I could get a peek at his dorm room, and see whether he will have a wardrobe or actual closet space.

S is bored at his 4 hr/day telemarketing job, and is still trying to get another job. Tomorrow he has an interview at Kohl’s for stocking help. Oh, I would like to help him use an employee discount there!

If it’s not on the web site, email the housing folks and ask your questions.

There are no interior photographs of Son’s dorm on the school web site. BUT, I was able to find several excellent pictures on a facebook page devoted to the school.

If you are looking for towels saw some nice fluffy towels…bath sheets, really…at TJMaxx today. They were $4.99!!! Didn’t get them because they were more “boy” colors according to D2.

A trick for more storage space–a lot of kids at S2’s college hang a sweater bag in the closet and then fold jeans, etc. and put on the shelves of the sweaterbag
