Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Ugh. We’re not done. Good scores, but she’s aiming pretty high. So now she has to decide whether to try the ACT in April or just stick with repeats on the SAT. The January SAT was in the middle of midterms–she spent one day doing practice sections. I would hope with more time she could match her PSAT scores. Were the PSAT scores a good indicator for others?

Astromom, I am wondering the same thing about PSAT scores VS. SAT’s. As a soph. my D got a 213 on PSAT and 2070 on SAT, as a jr she got a 230 on PAT and will take SAT in March (she took 2 subject tests last month)

Risumaro - Wishing your D a 2300+ on the SAT! My D got a 231 on the PSAT and a 2150 on the SAT, but I do think she was pretty worn out from midterms. She’s such a perfectionist, I know she’s going to want to try the ACT, but I hate to see how much time gets devoted to taking these tests. I’ll try to get her to take a practice ACT before the registration deadline at the end of the month.

Astromom, mathson never managed to match his PSAT score of 235, but that’s because he fell down on the writing section. He improved his essay the second time, but made more MC mistakes! He’d had an 80 in writing on the PSAT, 690 twice on the SAT. I can’t say he studied very hard though. His other section scores were very similar.

Astromom, yes my D is going to give the ACT a try too. Our school district is actually paying for all of the jrs to take in in April, but my D is on the Academic World Quest Team that qualified for Nationals in DC on the same day as the April ACT, so she is going to try to take it in June.

How close does their SAT score need to be to their PSAT score for National Merit?

Congratulations to all the people getting good news!! D2 didn’t take the last SAT, she’s waiting till the March, so . . .

DougBetsy, a 650 on CR is where D is aiming as well. I am not too worried about her Math score, but the CR seems to kill her every time. Anyway a 1300/1600 would be plenty for most of the schools she is considering.

S just called me from school, where he apparently checked his scores.
CR 730, M 790, CW 650 essay 9 /2170
He is happy but not thrilled, since he was hoping for an 800 in math.
I am thrilled with his CR score (math I know he is good at).

Congrats to all the kids who are done! He is not, this was for a talent search (they make you repeat them every year! which is radiculous!)

Thanks, everyone. I’m not really sure how to compare the PSAT and SAT scores - I do think they tend to fall within a range most of the time - but D’s writing increased by 140 points between the Oct. PSAT and the Dec. SAT (no studying), so I really wasn’t sure what to expect this time around. I know she’s a strong writer, and she felt good about her essay, but I thought the MC could go either way, given the difference in scores on the earlier tests. Luckily, it was just a small drop. Essay stayed the same. :)

Good luck to all of your kids preparing for the March SAT or the April ACT.

Yay!! My son got a 730 on the Sat2 math1, so he is DONE DONE DONE with testing!!! For the program he wants, he needed a 560 to show math proficiency - so WOOHOO!!!

ACT from December was great, so moving on to apps in the fall!!!

We’re concerned as all get-out with regard to the math. I would dance in the aisles if she got 650 on the math. She’s looking very good for the other two sections. Assuming, of course, that she’s “in the mood” to take the test.

Congrats Ag!! So happy and relieved for you.

Get off the chair and do the happy dance.

Risumaro–I don’t know the answer to your question about the SAT score and NMF. I googled it and got a CC thread, but no one had a definitive answer. I figure my D is going to keep at it until she gets up to at least her PSAT score, but I think for NMF purposes, the SAT just shouldn’t be way out of line with PSAT.

How do you quote a message in a reply? I check off the little box, but it never works.

Astromom, do

[quote]

then write something
then do

[quote]
but with / before quote

Do this…

{quote}How do you quote a message in a reply? I check off the little box, but it never works.{/quote}

But don’t use { and }. Use [ and ] instead.

Thanks for your patience. There’s probably a remedial CC class I should have signed up for. Once you starts seeing little smilies in my posts, you’ll know I’ve graduated.

Yea. It worked. Thanks.

Somewhere on this thread there was a tutorial on smilies. If you care to look back through it, you’ll find it.

Ugh. S looked at his scores before school and just said “Sign me up for the next one”. I don’t think he did any prep for this one, so now he’ll hit the blue book for March. i’m glad that he at leat is pretty happy with his ACT, but this SAT wasn’t in the same ballpark. Even a bit lower than his PSAT score total. Sigh… The fun continues.

Congrats to everyone on their great scores, and especially to those who are done!! Woo hoo!
