Parents of the HS class of 2028

The class of 26 thread has been really useful to me for my older kid, so I thought I’d start one for this group too!

Welcome everyone!

HI! I have a S28. I’m in the 2025 thread for my D25. I was hoping one of these would get started. S28 is very different than D25.

How so?

My kids are so different too. What does your S28 like? Mine likes to draw and make stuff. He wants to be an engineer.

Hello all !!!
I have just started the journey with my D26 I can’t even imagine that, I will have to repeat the terror with my S28. He will have totally different stats and interests then my D26 and we will probably have the additional joy of athletic recruiting :woman_shrugging::woman_facepalming:t3:

He likes video games and NOT sports at all. lol He seems to have found some like-minded kids. He was homeschooled until this year so I was a bit worried about it because he is very introverted, but he seems to be doing just fine. He doesn’t really care about school but is very smart, so we’ll see what happens with grades.

Mine is hoping to be recruited as well. It’s one of the reasons I am thinking about him early. I need to figure all that out.

That’s great that he’s off to a good start.

I am dreading the recruiting, it adds an extra layer of crazy to the admissions process!!

I feel the same way! A little excited for him to have this opportunity, and also overwhelmed by the complexities. Hopefully it will all become clear as we go along!

What classes are your kids taking this year? It’s always fascinating to me how different schools sequence things. My kid’s school is 6 periods, and PE is mandatory but doesn’t count as a course. They have some weird names for courses, but basically he’s taking

English 9
World History
Honors Precalc
Honors Physics
Spanish 4
Drawing

Right now he’s scheduled for advanced drawing in the spring. We’ll see if that sticks. Everything else is year long.

and playing soccer for his PE credit this season. He’ll pick something else for winter and spring.

S28 is taking
Spanish I
Intro to Lit
Honors Chemistry
Honors Biology/Biomed (project lead the way)
World History
Honors Algebra II
Computer Applications

Semester 2 he’ll be in a Bible class and Art. Our school started doing weird things with science a couple of years ago. The kids take one semester of chem and one semester of bio freshmen and sophomore years. So by the end of sophomore year, they’ve had a year of each. I hate it but it is what it is.

Also, we put him in regular history and English thinking there would be less writing/homework. So far that is not true for history as he has far more work than the honors class. It’s pretty frustrating.

DS is taking
(No honors classes offered, small college prep private school)

Biology
Spanish II
Algebra II
Literature
Social Studies
Acting

Anyone else wonder what they should be “doing” right now as parents of HS freshman w/r/t the college process? Nothing? Something? :woman_shrugging:

There is nothing to do right now. Just keep checking that the kids are handing their assignments in. With D25 we started visiting colleges sophomore year but that can wait til junior year, really.

At this point with my first, I was starting to pay attention to the process a little bit, and paying more attention when people with older kids talked about their experiences. I was continuing to make sure my kid was in a decent place academically, and had opportunities to explore different activities, but I’d been trying to do that all along. For S28, I’m also trying to learn about recruiting since that’s a different time line so I want to be ready if he goes that direction.

S28 has also gotten dragged along on some visits for his brother, and to visit some older cousins. So, maybe he’ll have more of a sense of what he likes when we start looking for him.

The transition from homeschool to high school has not been without a few bumps. S28 had a quiz on Friday that he studied for but he studied for a quiz for the upcoming week not the material he was supposed to study for Friday.

I’m having to adjust to the scattered boy brain he has vs the uber organized, first born, type A brain of D25.

Mine are the opposite. My oldest needed a lot of hand holding for the transition to high school, and still needs a fair amount. My S28 seems to have it all under control.

Joining - thanks for starting this! For us, it feels like the start to Freshman year was bumpier than we expected. I think he has it figured out now, but, yikes.

The upper level classes have been fine, actually, but the honors freshman level courses have been heavy on homework, and a lot of it is assigned and due the same night by midnight. It’s been tough to juggle with swim practice and such short notice.

English I (H)
Civics (H)
Biology (H)
AP Calc AB/BC
Spanish IV (H)
Computer Science (H)
Advanced Orchestra (H)

S28 is doing pretty well. He is in a mix of honors and regular classes. His regular history class is a doozy. The guy gives way more homework and is a lot harsher in grading than the honors teacher. We are wishing we had just put him in honors at this point.

He is on the robotics team and has been working hard at building and programing the robot. Competitions for that start soon.

As another parent of a kid juggling school ECs and sports, having assignments due at midnight would annoy the heck out of me. My S28 does HW in the car and also gets to school early every day because S26 has music practice before school. Sometimes he has a morning study period too. A midnight deadline would make it impossible to use that time well.
