Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Youdon’tsay - I just sent an email to Binghamton asking them if that’s the case.

That’s awesome LIMom. Thank you!

I’m not sure if D will even apply to Binghamton if it’s not EA.

Thank you, DougBetsy. The only one of those D may be interested in is engineering. I suppose for safety’s sake, you can declare as a freshman and can always transfer out.

zoosermom - I’ll let you know what they say when/if they respond.

limom: good idea…can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have mentioned it on Sunday, unless it’s not “public” yet?? or maybe “official?” please post when you know…

DB and QM, S and H went to the info session on the Journalism program, which S might be interested in. The woman leading it said they take about half the kids who apply as freshman direct admits (assuming you’re admitted to the university in general, of course), but that, as DB said, it’s much harder to get in if you apply as an ‘internal transfer’.

OMG, I just got the mail. 30 (count’em 30!!!) pieces of junk mail from schools I have never heard of.

Us too, Queen’s Mom! I just texted D that the floodgates have opened.

Following LIMom’s good example, I encouraged her to email her questions to a couple of school. It was amusing how nervous she was just to send emails.

I’m gonna check the mail right now!

DougBetsy,
Thanks for this VERY useful info. S2 would major in one of those areas, so this is good info to know.

Yes, same here. In the last 7-10 days there were so many mailings, many from schools that we have never heard about. We must have 30-40 envelopes. One day all of the mail was for my son (that was good, no bills).

LIMOMOF2, thanks for sending that email to Binghamton. I thought both my boys would be applying, but we’d have to think twice without the EA option. I will be very interested in the answer. We are also inundated with college snail mail. I am trying to guess the school from looking at the logo. Pretty obscure at times!

Wow! Our mail still hasn’t come today - curious to see what, if anything shows up here.

Zoosermom - I think it’s great that your D is getting involved enough to even have questions!

She’s just sticking her toe in. She really doesn’t want to go away from home and is now trying to come to terms with that.

Good thing about the mail is that there were three colleges that she has some level of interest in.

Where’s the mailman??? :)

^^probably backed up b/c yesterday was a holiday? seems to always be late on the Tuesday after a no-mail Monday…

I just got our mail - 15 pieces - 2 colleges she’s willing to look at, and 2 others that are on my mind as possibilities, but both are a little far from home. The others, not so much.

BTW, I believe some of you have mentioned that your kids are considering Loyola of Md.? If so, she got an invitation to an open house there on Saturday, 3/21 from 10 AM -3 PM at the Reitz Arena.

Zoosermom and others - just received word back from Bing - Rodney was right - no more EA after this year. I received an email response from the Director of Admissions, and he said next year, decisions will be mailed out between Mar. 20 & Apr. 1, 2010. Sad. That was supposed to be D’s EA school. What to do…

Rodney - thanks again for passing along that information. The admissions officer should have mentioned that the other day - instead she talked about the benefits of EA vs. ED.

Ugh…I was hoping I was wrong…and a late response date to boot? any mention of OOS? apparently, there was a rumor floating around that OOS would hear earlier? (not on my original email correspondence)…

Not for nothing, but given the economic climate and uncertainty of yield, maybe I’m crazy, but why wouldn’t Binghamton institute an ED policy? Given the low cost of attendance, both instate and out, there really isn’t an argument for lower income students having a negative issue with ED…is there?

Rodney - no mention of OOS at all, and I didn’t tell him I was in-state.

One other thing they said at the info session was that this year they anticipate receiving 33,000 applications for 2000 spots.

Not sure what to say about the ED - even with Binghamton’s low cost, to families who are truly low income, or even average income in NY, coming up with about $17,000 a year might be difficult, so they might not want to take the chance.
