D has many online chat invites, she hasn’t done any.

SLUMOM- did he like the game? Who won? interesting reaction, as I don’t consider either BC or UNH urban, I assume the game was at BC? Did they drive in or take the T?

Speaking of schools on the outskirts of urban, I still haven’t done a visit report on Tufts, I’ll get to that sometime… the short recap is that they had several interesting programs but D didn’t like how the campus looked in Feb compared to the schools visited last summer/fall when it was all pretty out. So she wants to see it again in the nice weather. I think it could interest her, the size was ok, but it lacked some of the community aspects of some of the other schools we have seen.

jackief - we toured Tufts last summer, so I’m interested in hearing what you and your D thought of it. Was there a lot of snow/ice, or was it just that everything wasn’t green and beautiful? Looking forward to the rest of your report. I’m pretty sure the school is staying on D’s list.

the Tufts report might not be done before the weekend but I will get to it. Work is crazy-busy plus today is the last day for a bunch of people laid off (not moi)

No new snow but typical brown New England winter between the lovely snows. I gave a thumbs up as we walked up one hill and there were hay bales attached to the trees. I knew that they were for before the tour guide told us!

For Richmond last night there 3 main themes: general, admissions, and student life. Each theme was chatted in a different “room.” Each room had current students and adm officers present to answer questions.

It was mainly back and forth Q&A between the high schoolers and the Richmond ppl. Some questions were as benign as “describe Richmond weather” and some were really specific like “do you prefer AP Chem or AP Bio for a Business major?” (not kidding)

We asked questions about interviews (they’re optional), greek rivalries (told not an issue), and general education requirements (there aren’t many).

It was a positive experience. There’s another one on March 23.

Jackief - take your time on the Tufts report - but fill me in on the bales of hay. I don’t believe we saw hay bales attached to the trees, and I have no clue what that’s about!

no, I wouldn’t have expected you to see the bales LIMOM. Anyone care to guess? (this could help with the post count although I have given up until May against the '09ers)

Okay, I’ll bite. The bales of hay attached to trees on a HILL (tip off) are to soften the blow if you lose control of the car on an icy pack and the car strikes a tree.

I just can’t see the need to attach to the trees if the hay is placed for animals to snack on.

We have a visit to Tufts planned for later in March. I hope that most of the snow will be melted. I am looking forward to hearing other people’s visit reports.

pugmadkate-I am in awe! I had my LAST child at 40. I will need a wheel chair ramp built to attend my kids’ college graduations.

Just watch, we’ll both be out in left field and discover the hay bales attached to trees on hills is something related to a local hay ride festival through the forest.

When I was growing up in Tacoma, I used to love to attend the annual salmon bakes at Owens Beach in Pt. Defiance Park. They always had lumber jack competitions, which were a delight to watch and awe insprising for me, as a young little girl. Those were the days.

Discussion about reducing math/science AP classes is still up in the air. The School Board has deferred deciding whether to leave it as a site based decision (which how the HS proposed cutting them) or making it a priority to fund anyway with district funds. I’ve been in public finance my entire career and know well enough that school funding is another animal entirely. Anyway, since the topic has entered the dialgoue at the Board level, I think we’re making progress.

I was going to go the route of some massive sleding/tubing race down the hill (with the hay bales protecting the beautiful minds and bodies of the students), but associated with a class dinner? Gee, I dunno. But it sounds like a fun activity to blow off steam after finals week.

did I say it was associated with the dinners for the students? No!

you are correct FAP, they sled/tray down the hill. The bales were on the uphill sides of the trees and then at the fence at the bottom.

Good luck with the AP science classes. I should find out in a couple weeks what changes are in store for our science curriculum, but in our case it is hopefully changes for the good.

Thanks, Jackief - that was a fun way to get the explanation. So, was there snow on the ground? I’m sorry if you’ve already answered that - somehow I missed it.

Mythmom - thanks for visiting us here. Make sure you come back often - we’ll all be needing your help very soon.

we are wanting to visit some schools. but most of the schools we want to visit are out on spring break at the same time we are out.

do you think it would be a waste to visit while school is not in session?

we could visit in the summer, i guess.

i just thought it would be better to do some visits before even applying (knowing pretty much that she would be accepted) to weed out some in case she just hates them for some reason. you know … they come up with the oddest reasons for not liking a particular school.
