Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Jackief, sorry for late reply, yes that was us on the SLU parent page. I asked the communications dept for a copy & they were kind enough to send us a 5" x 7" copy, which we framed. Hard to believe she graduates in May.

I seem to divide my posts between Class of '10 and Class of '09. At least Only Son (Class of '10) did seem to make some kind of geographical requirements over this past week of vacation. OK to New England, NY and PA. Won’t go further south than PA. School must be rural. Funny, how I never got that type of edict from my 3 daughters!

Snowing like crazy today, looks like we are in the 12" range. Will probably be no mail delivery for D3 (Class of '09). They never seem to deliver the mail on a day like today!

SLUMOM - hi. Lots of snow here today too.

Your S’s geog. requirements sound similar to my D’s, though she’s willing to go as far south as Virginia. She’s not limiting herself to rural schools though. :)

vicariousparent–at least in college they won’t have classes that start at 7:20 in the a.m.! The worst thing about HS is it is EVERY day, ALL day, the same long hours, whereas in college classes generally start later and there is time for afternoon naps if needed. Of course, students have to learn to manage all their “free” time and get their work done!

My S is bright but not ambitious. He knows he needs his sleep and most nights he is in bed by 10:30! Unbelievable, I know…

that was a beautiful moving picture slumom. Everyone go check it out  Do you think S might also be headed to SL, it seems to meet his requirements.

And good luck for the mail arrival for D3!

My D1, the '10er, was talking about when info comes from the colleges, we assume for most of the schools she is looking at it will be closer to Apr 1. She will be on a preseason trip for her spring sport the last week in March… She said we are not allowed to even tell her the names of mail that comes from her during that period, and she says we can’t hold anything to the light (ha like that won’t happen) It is interesting how she is thinking of this now. I had mentioned to the college counselor that I would be happy to see a rolling school on the list, but she says she has no interest in getting an early answer from anyone. She sees senior friends now who don’t have any decisions freaking out, but she says it wouldn’t phase her…

scualam, it’s absolutely gorgeous here in NY if you like snow. When you don’t want to come, is when the snow has gotten grey and grungy and partially melted so the sidewalks are icy. That was actually a black mark on Bard, they do not shovel their walks adequately at all. I loved it when it snowed in college - someone else did the shoveling we just got to play in it. I was there for the big Boston Blizzard of '78. Three feet of snow, Harvard canceled classes for the first time in history. Kids skied down the steps of Widener Library. We made a gigantic snow dragon and tunnels in the main courtyard of our House.

Yesterday was one of those days I felt we were on a different continent, or even a different planet. While reading of snow storms in the east, it was around 85 degrees and quite sunny at the zoo. Surreal.

Meanwhile, we’re praying the rain comes today, and that we get some additions to the snowpack. Levels aren’t looking good. A drought will not help the rather large agricultural portion of the CA economy. Ahhhh …

idad, if you’re coming down south and your ds is into jazz, check out University of North Texas, which has a fabulous music program. Graduates/students include Norah Jones and the Eagles (UNT’s mascot is the Eagles). Doesn’t have the super-strong academics of a Rice or Tulane, but lots of people love it there: [UNT College of Music | Home](http://www.music.unt.edu/) Maybe it could be a safety?

A college bf was a Tulane grad who earned extra money playing in quartets and other ensembles around New Orleans. :)

Yesterday, my son and his entire lacrosse team from UT got stranded at the Atlanta airport because of the snow storms!!! I spent all day trying to find a way form him to get back to Austin today in time for a specific class!!! Who would have thought that a snow storm would come to Atlanta??

He was able to get on a flight this morning at 8:40, but others on the team are still stuck, some can’t even get out until LATE tonight! What a bummer!

But, they went 2-0 against Georgia Tech and Northeastern, so it was a good road trip over all!!

mommusic, you have just described my S as well. Most people don’t believe me when I tell them…

ag54, glad your son made it onto a flight. And congrats on the games!

My S2 is also in bed by 11pm on school nights. It’s not his choice – its the rule. Of course the phone is upstairs with him, so I imagine there are late night texts. But the lights are off and he’s in bed. I still have to nudge him out of bed most mornings at 6am.

S2 just doesn’t function after 10 pm. He has always been my full-speed/dead stop kiddo. He gets eight hours most nights.

S1 is one of those obnoxious CHIPPER HAPPY MORNING PEOPLE, which is why DH always took him to the bus at 6:15 am. Those kinds can keep to themselves and leave me alone! S1 also gets his sleep, though – he is fond of the afternoon nap before starting homework. Did it in HS and is doing it in college too. He tries to keep schoolwork at college limited to 9-5 so he can hang out with friends, IM/FB, help others w/problem sets, etc. in the evenings.

jackief - how did you guess that was SLUMOM’s family in the picture?

I would try to convince your D to choose a rolling or EA safety-type school, for your peace of mind as well as hers. I know she feels ok about it now, but next year she might feel differently. It’s probably worth the extra work and application fee just to have that peace of mind.

At the moment, D has a few EA schools on her list, but none of them are safeties, so I’m trying to find one that is agreeable to her.

ag54 - I didn’t even know it snowed in Atlanta yesterday! For some reason, I thought started in Virginia and came north from there.

Great photo, btw, SLUMOM!

SLUMOM mentioned it in the 09 thread where I mostly lurk and try to limit my post count  I replied to her about it here  :D

I know on the EA/rolling, but she is cool as a cucumber. I have mentioned a few to her which are saftely and not really good fits for her, and the college counselor has mentioned ones even farther off the mark, so that is not helping.

She will probably apply EA to Chicago. On that note, we are set to go to the Junior visit day on May 11, one of her friends is going also with some subset of her family. We have not booked flights/lodging yet, we are going to see if we can coordinate and maybe save some $.

Well, you know your D, so if you’re sure she’ll be fine, you’re probably right. At the moment, we’re basically in the same boat - she has a handful of possible EA schools, but they aren’t safeties at all. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the school after your visit in May.

Oh, and thanks for filling us in about the photo - I couldn’t imagine how you put that together…lol. I also lurk on the 09 thread, as you know, but I must have missed that post.

jackief: I wonder why they don’t hold junior visit day on March 11? (I am beginning to think that I am now the one getting hung up on the weather.)

May in Chicago should be very nice. The campus will be beautiful. Find lodging early, there is little near campus. Downtown deals can be had in these times, however (and are fun); places near Midway airport are cheap. Here is one decent place that is walking distance to campus: http://www.woodedisle.com/

Thanks for the tips idad. I’m waiting to see if this second family wants to stay together, maybe in a suite, from our side we are going for low budget and I had thought of the International House, any comments on that? I had also looked at that Wooded Isle apt place. We are def going into Midway and if it were just us would be taking the bus to campus. Second family might rent a car so again, waiting to hear what they think. I will want to book lodging soon.

There is a second visit day on March 30 but that is only 1/2 day. The May date is during AP testing, which I thought was odd, but D will have APUSH the previous Fri and should be set for her test later the next week.

jackief: If you are looking to share a suite in a great area in Chicago, one can often get a great deal at this hotel [Residence Inn Chicago Downtown: an extended stay suites hotel in downtown Chicago Illinois](http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/chird-residence-inn-chicago-downtown-magnificent-mile/) You would love the location, check the bargain sites for this hotel and try negotiating with them. I have gotten rates as low as $150 a night for a suite with a kitchen.

thanks again idad. I forwarded the info on to the other family, haven’t had a chance to look for deal there yet

jackief,
DS#1 is a grad student at Chicago, and when traveling (always thru Midway) we have recently discovered the hotels at the airport. (We stayed once at the Ramada Inn in Hyde Park-big mistake!) I have literally picked the most inexpensive one and stayed there. It is then ~25 minutes by car (because of the traffic) to the University. S always takes the bus from Midway to the University, and I believe he says to allow 45 minutes. http://www.midwayhotelcenter.com/

thanks to you also momof3. How about someone else coming to the event and we can meet up?? QM???
