Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Taking the SAT 3 times is the limit at our house. I usually let my kids take 3 SatII (including one science) just in case, they want to apply to a school, that requires them.
I don’t understand, why colleges don’t pay attention to the writing portion. Many Profs are complaining, that too many HS graduates, don’t know how to write.

My S wants to take 2 APs science, next year. However, the school has decided (unlike last year), it will only consider such request individually.
I am debating whether to talk to his adviser, or the head of the science Dept. about this new policy.
BTW, he is currently taking 2 math classes (AP STAT. and Pre- cal.).

To clarify – Score Choice means they can send only the SAT the student wants – they can’t send the best score from each section over multiple tests. From what I’ve been reading, colleges are still superscoring, but in order to do that, the kid has to send in each full SAT with the score he/she wants included.

1/09 SAT CR 670 M 590 W 650
3/09 SAT CR 650 M 630 W 680

To get the super score of CR 670 M630 W680, the student would have to send both the January and March scores.

SAT-IIs – JHU “recommends up to three.”

SAT IIs and the AP tests are the best subject matter indicators and serve to address any open issues regarding grade inflation/deflation at the various high schools.

I’ve never understood why any student, except for those who are homeschooled, would take more than three SAT IIs, distributed among math/science and language/foreign language/social studies. Apparently, some of them do. There aren’t really kids out there who “enjoy” taking these tests, are there? Shudder at the thought.

FindAPlace, yup – S2’s scores on the standardized stuff (we hope) will counter concerns about the GPA at his very challenging, grade-deflated program.

S2 has taken Math Level II and USH already – he feels like he needs to take the Spanish SAT-II because of the programs he’s considering, but knows that a top score is VERY tough to earn. On the other hand, he thinks he’d do really well on the SAT-II Lit and is already taking the AP Lit exam in May. With score choice, if Spanish is a disaster, he’d still have a third exam under his belt. We may wait to see how the SAT-CR score comes out before deciding on that SAT-II.

Too much thinking…

Question about SAT IIs…

Son already took US History SAT II and got 620. He’d like to do better on 2 more. We just can’t figure out which 2.

He is taking French IV, AP World, and AP Stat now. French is his best subject and math is his worst. But, is level IV FL high enough for an SAT II? Or should he stick with the APs for SAT II purposes? He won’t finish AP French next year until it’s too late for SAT testing.

Opinions?

FindAPlace - my D took 2 science tests (Bio and Chem), and plans to take Math II and US History, and possibly Physics. Why? Not because she loves the tests, that’s for sure. Some of the schools she’s planning to apply to require Math, History is probably her strongest subject (so she’s hoping for a higher score on that than on either of the science exams), and she’s debating Physics because she thinks she might do better on that exam than she did on Bio or Chem. My guess is that she’ll skip the Physics exam, but I never know with her. Her Bio and Chem scores were both very respectable, especially considering that sciences are always her worst classes.

ontheedge - my D is taking precalc and AP Stats too. She didn’t want to take two sciences at the same time because that would mean two labs - but she had considered it.

And I sort of wish that colleges would consider the writing portion of the SAT - that was her best section.

DB- how about having him take the full length practice tests in the CB SAT II book? Only caveat on the french is that usually the language tests are scaled harder, because of native speakers. If he thinks listening is his strong point those tests (language with listening) are only given in Nov. There is no corresponding SAT II in stats, so he would take Math I or Math II, depends on how fresh those areas of math are to him

DougBetsy - not too sure what to suggest to you. How is he at science? I know the Spanish SAT II is notorious for kids getting lower scores than they would expect, but I’m not sure if the same is true for the French exam.

As a native speaker of a foreign language I can tell you that no matter how good your son is in French, he will not be able to compete with the native speakers in that language. Back when I took the (I’m dating myself) “Achievement Tests” I was actually able to spot a typo on the foreign language test. I got an easy perfect score.

My daughter is also in French 4 this year (and doing fabulously well), but she will not be taking the French SAT II.

Absolutely agree with Queen’s Mom on this one. Have been told by “the professionals,” not to let kids take the foreign language SAT’s. They are dominated by the native speakers.

If you think you can get over 600 on a language test you might want to take it spring of your senior year, because at many universities it will exempt you from their language requirement. Otherwise, I agree, only take it has an extra, not one of the required ones. I did get an 800 on French way back when, but it was AFTER I spent a year in France.

mathson took 3 SATs in one day and got 3 800’s. He was happy to get them all over with in one shot. But I admit he’s one of those good test takers. S2 will also do three in one day. With score choice I don’t think there’s a downside. 3 subject tests is still less exhausting than the SAT1.

This is completely an OT post so feel free to disregard, but I just got a letter from my Law School’s career office basically begging for position listings from alumni, assuming they still have jobs. I graduated in 1994 and this is the first letter of its kind I have ever gotten. Things must be pretty harsh out there in the real world.

No joke, QM. My DH keeps sending me articles about firms laying off attorneys.

Yes, H told me yesterday that a large, well-known law firm he does business with (he’s in-house counsel at a corporation) just let 160 attorneys go.

yes article in the Boston Globe recently about big law firm layoffs. Also hit my area (high tech) hard. Head down, keep working…

DD #1 & DD #2 were both supposed to take the SAT’s on 3/14 (#1 for real & #2 for JHU talent search.) Then we found out that Mock Trial competition was scheduled for 3/13-14. So I paid the $22 to switch DD#1 to the May date (thanks College Board; that phone call was worth the $22 :frowning: Then they decided to have a regional competition on 2/28. DD’s team didn’t move on, so now 3/13 & 14 are free but there is no way that I’ll pay another $22 to change the date, especially when she hasn’t had time to study. So the May SAT date will stay. It will be her first official one (she took them in 8th grade for JH) and she’ll need the scores for NM at the very least.

In TN, the ACT’s are mandatory for everyone, and her school will administer them to all juniors on April 22nd which is not a national test date. We figure that her ACT and SAT prep will go well together since really she just needs to work on the math (and science for ACT.)

Then it’s off to AP test land for APUSHistory & AP English whichever. I think that she’ll be taking 2 SAT II’s in June. Right now her list has a few schools that want SAT II’s (including Princeton, which she’s applying to kind of on a whim. I was hoping the SAT II req’s would cross that off her list but whatever.) She’ll take the SAT US History (which apparently dovetails nicely with APUSHistory) and Math 2.

The list is down to 14; she’s visiting UT-Knoxville this Saturday for Junior Day. We’re going to UA-Birmingham and Birmingham Southern at the end of the month and hoping to fit a trip to Rhodes in later this month or at the end of April. We’ll visit UGA during Spring Break. We’ll visit Princeton during our trip to NJ/NY for the chorus Carnegie Hall concert (although that’s also for old times sake; our pediatricians were in Princeton and I really think the call of Halo Pub is half the reason for her interest :)

LIMOMOF2, your wish may come true. I think, eventually colleges would have to look at the writing section.
The reason why I want S, to take 2 APs is because, this is the first time, it seems to be willing to work hard.

There is a hiring freeze, where H works. No one got fired, but the people who left, were not replaced. I really feel sad, when I go to his job. It feels like, a ghost town
I remember, when my kids, used to meet H for lunch and loved to look at the blueprints.

RobD, Princeton requires 3 SAT II’s. Has your DD already taken one?

Thanks for the input on the foreign language SAT-IIs. S2 is thinking about IR, but noone actually requires a FL SAT-II. More to (over) think about!
