Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

I wanted D to look at Rice. Instead, she looked at me like I was a bug.

Booklady, why not Penn State?

Is your house where my D goes when she’s not at home? That’s my girl to a ā€œTā€

We’re not Catholic but she is interested in some Catholic schools because they’re known for classics.

Rice is on ds’s list. If they said yes we’d look no further.

Not enamored of the culture there, it’s in the middle of nowhere (he’d like suburban or urban) and it’s arguably harder to get into than some of the other schools on his list.

Very much in flux, but so far:

Reach
U. of Chicago
Vassar
Tufts

Match
Brandeis
Rochester U.
Bates
Macalaster
SUNY Geneseo
Vanderbilt

Safety
American
U. of Vermont

He’s likely to major in history or possibly something like international relations. He wants to be in a city or suburb and he’d rather the school wasn’t too small or too big. He’s a smart kid, but due to some memory/processing issues his grades haven’t been what they might be. He refused to have a 504 plan in high school. His weighted average is currently 96, but that includes 100s in two orchestra classes every term.

Sorry, wrong forum.

Mine has refused one since elementary. Her grades are therefore affected. She started asking for extra time on some quizzes on an informal basis late last year. She would have to be on a full 504 to get accommodations on anything other than quizzes. Still, I think she is doing wonderfully well. Her weighted average is 3.77 (which is pretty nice considering she bombed one semester sophomore year - right after my sister died :()

I am so very sorry.

Zmom: I did commute. A lovely ride down the GSP & 280. I had two good friends who completed their undergrad work at SH; one was in ROTC and the other was a good Catholic girl, so yeah, it was totally me.

Here’s the current list for D, although like Booklady’s son, mine hasn’t officially taken the SATs or ACTs yet; we just have PSAT scores to go by and past performance when she took them for talent searches. She’ll take the ACT’s with the entire junior class of the state of TN on April 22nd and the SAT’s on May 2nd after originally registering for 3/14; we had to postpone due to a potential conflict that is now gone. My 8th grader is taking the SAT’s this Saturday for JHU talent search.

Reaches:
Princeton
Northwestern
George Washington

Matches:
Tulane
Vanderbilt
Centre College
Rhodes
Washington at St. Louis
Birmingham-Southern
Xavier

Safeties:
University of Tennessee Knoxville
University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa
University of Georgia
University of Alabama-Birmingham (for their health science programs)

I think that there will be a couple coming off the list within the next month, and a couple that might be jumping on. I think the fact that the list that was at 33 at Christmas is now only at 14 is pretty good.

Darn good, I’d say. We’re shooting for 10.

Rhodes is my dream school and I wish she would look there, but it’s too far. sigh.

You’ve all been so busy here today - it’s hard to keep up.

zoosermom - take CD’s advice - act like it was all a big misunderstanding and set up a date/time when you can pick up the paperwork. If she isn’t cooperative at that point, then as CD said, on to Plan B.

A list of schools? D’s tentative list is Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Tufts, Binghamton and another SUNY or two, tbd. We still have a whole bunch of schools to check out - D’s GC gave her a list of 25+ schools (including those mentioned), and we’ll be visiting a few of those in April and then some more over the summer. I’d also like to take her to visit some NYC schools, even though she says she doesn’t want to stay that close to home. We’ll do those on Saturdays once sports and APs are over (if I can get her to agree to go, that is). Not sure yet which schools we’re going to visit in April.

Just got out the calendar. Here, excluding spring break, there’s 12 weeks to the end of junior year. I feel like I’m the navigation officer and DS is the captain of his ship, and we’re busy trying to avoid rocky shores until then, and get that ship to a good place in June, with a decent GPA, class rank, SATs, etc. Then we can take a breath before the next steps … college applications!

I saw the AP Calc teacher at the school board meeting last night. We chatted about stuff regarding S. The teacher is excited about writing the LOR for S. Good thing we chose him and not the AP Physics teacher, who we discovered is leaving the area at the end of this school year. I spoke to my ever knowledgeable school board member friend, who advised me his tenure at the HS was always a question mark, since there was a ā€œtwo bodyā€ problem in that the teacher’s significant other was doing a post doc here and now that it’s done, employment is requiring they leave the area. Too bad.

Zmom: Rhodes is my dream school for her, and it is on her list (along with the other LAC’s of Birmingham-Southern & Centre) as she is humoring me. I am hoping that once we visit she will see my inherent wisdom  Or, she will quickly cut her list down to 8. And that’s OK too, 'cause it’s her journey not mine.

Booklady – if S’s list turns out to be reach-heavy, you might want to check St. Joseph’s University in Philly. (The campus is technically only partly in the city, but it feels suburban-y). The size is right, and there is a lot of energy around the basketball team. They have one of the coolest mascot traditions – The Hawk. Admission is probably easier than Pitt and UDel (don’t know about SU).

Like you, we’re waiting until D2 takes the SAT for the first time the Saturday to place schools in the reach/match/safety bins. She is interested in nursing (BSN), schools on the radar so far are UPitt, Penn State, IUP, Bloomsburg, and West Virginia.

I just decided that my dream school for her is High Point. Did you see the pictures of those dorms, not to mention the fact that her scores and grades would probably qualify her for some major moolah!

OK, that was a bit tongue in cheek.

Whoa, that is one weird thread, and I thought D and I were clingy!

mrsref, we live about a mile from St. Joe’s, so it’s a little too close to home for S. If we lived further away it would be a great addition to his list.

Yeah, I feel pretty independent after reading that thread! I do feel sorry for the daughter, though. What a burden she has to bear.

RobD, Has anyone told you that a long-time CC poster (Curmudgeon) has a D at Rhodes? She got into some tippy-top schools, chose Rhodes and has been very happy (not to mention doing extremely well).

Mathmom, we are running in parallel universes. Seriously. Right down to the major, size/location, processing issues and no 504/IEP, and four schools on the the list.

S2 has 17 schools on the list and is visiting a bunch over the next month. He is on the verge of dropping a couple off the list – two of the four big reaches and a match/safety or two. The biggest issue we have to suss out now is whether he wants to apply to the flagship, as that will drive a good bit of strategy re: likelies/merit/financial safeties. Our goal is to have ten schools – I’d like a lot in the middle range, but the flagship issue will drive that one.

I think I have a winner in the S-L-O-W Guidance Department: my niece got her PSAT score back YESTERDAY! My brother called last night for expert consulting services. (I clearly spend too much time here!)
