My D would love to take a comparative religion course - but her school doesn’t offer that as an option. I hope your D enjoys the class too. D loved AP Euro too. :)

Yes she had a hard choice. There are just not enough periods in the day to take everything she wants. The three potential classes on the chopping block were Honors French V (“but mom, I am just becoming good at French-I can’t drop it”), Honors physics (“I can’t apply to tech schools without it”) and AP Euro (“We didn’t spend a significant time on anything in AP World. I want to to go more in depth in Euro”).

I am proud of her. She really loves to learn.

QM, that’s wonderful. With an attitude like that she’ll go far, wherever she goes to college.

Thanks, everyone. So much I want to comment on, but I’m in a whirlwind and have to post and run. Ds decided last night that he would like his ceremony to tie in to the next Court of Honor for his troop, which is – get this – in less than three weeks! So far, I’ve created invitation text, went to the Scout store to get invites, developed a program. Now, on to food.

The bad news is that this is a rush job; the good news is because it’s a rush job and tied in to a regular Court of Honor, where different patrols bring food, there’s less pressure to do an elaborate program, have a huge reception solo, etc. Anyone out there have experience with this? I think I’ll either just get a big fancy cake wtih the Eagle emblem on it or make tons of big, fancy sugar cookies in the shape of a fleur de lis and ice them. Any other ideas? Time is of the essence, though the most pressing need is to get these invites printed and mailed.

Go for the big fancy cake. Do you have a bakery nearby that will make personalized cookies or chocolates? They’re pretty reasonable these days. Are you doing appetizers or anything? Food-food?

Does anyone know if on the College Board and Princeton Review websites the average GPA referred to in college profies are weighted or unweighted?

Youdon’tsay: Congrats on the Eagle Scout…that is huge.

Re: Vanderbilt & being on the match list. I’ll have to check my little chart when I get home. I’m pretty sure that I remember it being an academic match (now financially, that is a different story.) Of course, it may be an issue of familiarity breeding expectations. It’s our local university (we’re 20 miles away) and DD has been to their summer residential programs, plus a bunch of local kids attend. Maybe we’re not looking at the acceptance rate correctly. I could be wrong.

Re: the financial list vs. the “where can I get in list.” Don’t feel bad about that; about half of DD’s list has an asterisk next to them saying “only if you get merit aid.” In this economy, with a kid who is a CNN junkie, she totally understands and is on board

For Courts of Honor, each patrol is assigned something, so there already will be drinks, appetizers and desserts. I guess I’m thinking I’d do one big thing on a separate table as a focal point for his Eagle stuff.

I would love to get my hands on one of those little chocolate fountains. When he was younger, we went to a wedding and he said, “I want one of those at MY wedding!” What can I say – he has his mother’s sweet tooth.

YDS … first congratulations on the Eagle award! And I think it is also awesome to have an Eagle promotion at the normal Ct of H. I think it inspires the younger generation. I hope I get to have one… DS is SPL this 6 months and the new (5th grade) scouts showed up last night. So cool to have him in charge. (side note, yes, I have read and posted on the slacker son thread that used to be out there, but he is coming up. I still have hopes for the Eagle but time is wasting fast!).

Anyway, enough about me! For the cake/cookie. The cakes with the emblem look AWESOME, but really are a mess to serve at that kind of party. I’d go with the cookies at the Ct of H and a smaller cake/emblem for at home party or party for relatives after. If this is such short notice, will relatives show up? And one other thought … if relatives are showing up for graduation instead of Eagle, then it IS still appropriate to have eagle emblem cake at graduation time. Just my $.02 …OOPS I thought I was on the '09 thread! Well, graduation doesn’t enter into it then, SORRY

(And I’m glad I didn’t add to “those people’s” post count LOL!

thanks for the support on the coach situation. The superstar girl is a great girl, so I don’t want to slight her at all. Her parents have a bit of money and the bankroll many team dinners etc. This also I don’t think is buttering up the coaches. All the bad decisions from the coaches I think are just their MO and I also don’t think they realize the harm they are doing.

Someone mentioned what if the star gets injured, that reminded me of another experience D had with this coach in a different sport Freshman year, I hadn’t thought of it recently until that memory prompt. In this case the top girl on the team WAS injured for most of the season. At the end of season party, coach gave out awards to top 5. D’s stats put her objectively in position #5 for performance during the season. Well wouldn’t you know it, but coach gives injured girl (and it was either the whole season or a vast majority of it) the #1 award and down the line shutting out D. Yes based on past years experience, injured girl was tops, but she wasn’t this season.

She doesn’t love this sport (the current one) she likes it and has been doing it the most years of all and she is the longest on the team so has had a leadership role with the star off practicing by herself. But my guess is she will drop it because she isn’t getting the recognition. We shall see (check back in another 1000 posts next year!
)

YDS- on the eagle ceremony I have no experience but good luck pulling it all together and savoring the moment! I have seen the chocolate fountains at party rental stores.

I also want to give thumbs up to QM’s D for pursuing her interests and not what the colleges want. She’ll find her niche and I agree with others will succeed in what she does.

esobay, including the younger scouts is one of the reasons he wants to do it at part of the CofH.
The research I’ve done shows the fountains as much more expensive than I would have thought – $300. For that price, I can get an Amy’s ice cream wagon to come. Ds would looooove that.

Thanks for adding to the '10 post count!

Jackief:

Based on your recent post of the coach who gave a performance award to a player injured most of the season, all I can say is that coach is a piece of work. Yikes! Why not create some special, different award if he simply must give that player something … most inspirtational from the sidelines?

Qmom:

I think your daughter will end up doing just fine. She should enjoy AP Euro. My S took it as a sophomore (one of his first three AP classes) and worked his tush off for it yet, in the end, found it a good experience.

One of the things our HS does that I like is to send progress reports. It’s basically a report card that comes before the quarter grade and then before the semester grade. So there’s really no excuse for the student to know where they’re at in the class (occasionally if a teacher is busy or hasn’t had as many marks for the progress report, they will just list a P or F for pass/fail.)

Anyway, we just got the progress report in the mail yesterday and it prompted me to think that time is moving quickly through this junior year. I’ll have to remember this for next year at this time, when the clock seems to stand still for seniors waiting on those admission decisions.

Looks like it will be another cool day on the pool deck this afternoon. I kinda wish there wasn’t two swim meets the week running up to the Saturday SAT, but I long since noted I can’t change the world so … :)

That is a paragraph to savor.

No, FAP, she decided to drop AP Euro. She won’t be taking it.

Does anybody actually have any idea? I’ve been asking for a while, but can’t get an adequate answer.

From my knowledge, the majority of schools report unweighted to college board…that being said, there are a small minority that do not; one that comes to mind is UMiami…most others are unweighted.

Queen’s mom, my daughter would be so envious of the comparative religion class. Her school doesn’t have too many options in the non-science areas.

As I’ve mentioned a long while ago, our school is not very into APs for the good and the bad it brings. We have a Modern Euro class that is optional but taken by most sophomores. D1 took it last year and D2 will take it next year. I haven’t looked into how close it is to the AP curriculum but D2 isn’t strong in history so she wouldn’t consider doing the extra to supplement. But as I told her, it isn’t optional in our house, and will give her a stronger foundation for USH in Jr year whether AP or not.

We have a changes to the science curriculum meeting tonight. They are adding AP Chem and AP Phys next year. Don’t know which Phys. Will see how this will work out for both Ds, as D2 is more on the math/science side, D1 is “I want to take everything I can” mode so we will see if she decides to take one of these as a Senior or not.

I don’t even pay attention to the GPA reported publicly by the colleges, who knows what they mean and asking in general threads on the matter here hasn’t produced any answers. Case in point, Middlebury’s AVERAGE GPA in the Princeton Review book is listed as 4.0. I just look at our naviance data and hope for the best. When we get into the final round of college visits and scrutiny, perhaps a direct question to the admissions office would give a more precise answer.

YDS:

$300 for a chocolate fountain? Wow, this one must be huge or gilt edged. I just price checked at Bed, Bath & Beyond and found a small one listed for $29.99.

Maybe the $300 includes Godiva chocolate and other fixings? That I’d understand. Still, a quick stop to BBB and Traders Joes for the chocolate and fixings and you’d still be under three digits unless the expected crowd is huge.
