Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Jackie, yes, I remember seeing that about “all scores” (including the ACT), but I do not see how it can be enforced, especially if the scores were not reported to the student’s high school.

Hey Beltwaymom…my DD is a world class sleeper especially on Saturday mornings. Between the coughing and the fever all week, which led to some disrupted sleep, and the Nyquil it didn’t surprise me at all that she slept that long. Although we do know a few kids at the HS who have had mono in the past few months…

She was up and acting normal this morning for church. We started her on Mucinex yesterday and seems to have kicked the cough away  So here’s hoping for an illness free week.

RobD - hope your D’s health continues to improve - so hard to see them suffering, knowing all that they have on their plates.

Keil - according to Naviance data from my D’s school for last year’s senior class, it should be a safety for her too, but for some reason, her GC didn’t include it as one. I should ask her if this was an oversight, or if the admissions results from this year have perhaps skewed things a bit. I really think you should be fine. Good luck. :)

In case anyone was wondering, D reported that the Math section was the hardest she has ever seen. She ran out of time (which never happened to her on a math section before). Hopefully the curve will be forgiving, because the material apparently wasn’t. On the other hand she claims, she “kicked writing’s butt”! I guess that’s a good thing. The less said about CR, the better.

I guess she will be retaking it, again. :frowning: Maybe she will have a nice writing score for eventual superscoring. Trying not to think about it 'till April.

QMom:

I’m sure your D’s comment about the Math section are more realistic than my S’s who, true to form, was bemoaning the Critical Reading section. So today, when we went to get him new shoes, he mentioned his book light was broken. So I got him another, so he can practice up on that CR in case he needs it for a May sitting of the SAT.

What is it about that CR section that makes it so difficult for some of our kids? D has always been a good reader, received high grades in English courses, and done extremely well on standardized tests! It’s not that her score is bad, but it doesn’t seem to reflect her ability the way the math and writing tests do.

I’ve spoken with some adults with PhD’s in English and social sciences who claim some of the sample CR reading sections they’ve seen are no walk in the park. I concur and I only have an MPA. :)

I can’t figure it out either, but my S has been consistent with these tests, even though he gets compliments from the English teachers. Go figure. He’s not the bookworm I am but he does alright for himself. Clearly, reading a biography 700+ pages on Peter the Great and writing an essay over holiday break for extra credit was not a picture of a kid who can’t read and comprehend.

S2 found that the kind of analysis and writing he has to do in IB English has made a big difference (+160 for CR, +120 in W) in his scores, without having to do a lot of test practice. They have REALLY hard stuff to dissect and then write about at a very high level. He’s a very good writer – but close analysis is tough to master.

The IB coordinator recommends the kids take AP Lit (not Lang) junior year because of all the work they’ve done.

S2 had an experimental math section (boo hiss – a CR or W would have been fine with him) and said Math was tougher than anything in the CB Blue Book he’d done. It wasn’t that the types of problems were different, just some were harder than expected. Didn’t have any big problems with CR and W, though is not sure how he did overall. He said he’s not sure how he did overall. He’ll retake in June after APs and IBs if he’s not happy.

^ How can you tell which section is experimental? Is it one of the shorter ones? I was too busy racing through the math (and still didn’t finish one section–I always mess up pacing on the grid-ins) to count and try to figure it out. Ended up with 4 omits; unfortunately, 3 in the grid-in section and it was the only grid-in so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t experimental.

Keix, he said he had four math sections, and on the CB Blue Book tests, there are only three.

Hello all, new to this 2010 thread. Thank you for your insightful comments. My D took her first SAT March 14. She is currently in AP US Hx and AP Calculus and planning to take SAT Specials in US Hx and Math II in May. I just wonder if she might be better off taking the SAT Specials in June to give another month of preparation. Otoh, she may wish to repeat the SAT in June, or possibly as late as the October test. Any suggestions/comments? Perhaps registration changes once we know March SAT results? Thanks in advance.

Giveherwings – Welcome and I like your screen name!

S2 took the SAT-II USH and AP in May last year. There is heavy overlap between the multiple choice on the AP and the SAT-II, so the extra month shouldn’t make a difference for that one. On the other hand, he waited til June to take Math Level II because his class had another five weeks of material to cover. My kids have tried not to take more than one SAT-II at a time, but plenty of kids take two in one morning and do well without getting wiped out. Three in one day can be an issue for some.

SAT-IIs are best taken at the end of that school year in which you cover the material, so personally, I’d work around getting those two done this spring and doing the SAT in the fall if she still wants to take it.

Others will have different approaches, but your know your D best and how she handles stress, preparation, and how she tests in general.

Welcome Giveherwingsmom. Good screen name, BTW although don’t be surprised if people abbreviate it. I’ve become FAP. :)

October may be a bit late in the game for a SAT retake if she’s considering any ED/EA applications. What if she re-arranged to take the SAT I in May and did the SAT IIs in June, after she’s taken the APs in May? This is the plan for my S (if he needs to retake SAT I.) He’s already taken SAT II Math 2 and plans on taking it in US History and Physics. Luckily, he’s taking AP Physics C, which will better prepare him for the SAT II, or so we’ve been told.

My S decided to wait a year and took SAT II Math 2 June of his sophomore year, after he’d completed AP Calc BC. He aced it. It’s known for having a generous curve, as is the Physics test.

Yes, your suggestions did cross my mind (take second SAT in May while still somewhat fresh on technique/study), then SAT II specials in June closer to completion of AP course work. This also allows extra time for her to review the geometry, algebra, pre-calc needed for the SAT Math II in a less hurried manner. May mean I just work with the CB on the registrations. Thanks.

What does superscoring mean?

Just when I think I’ve got the lingo down!

Giveherwingsmom - not sure yet whether my D is retaking the SAT or not, but if she does, it will be in May, and the SAT IIs will be in June. She’s also planning to take US History and Math II.

^^ Superscoring is taking the highest section score across multiple test sittings.

From my experience with DS (2008) the SAT2 and AP tests don’t exactly line up in most subjects. My advice is to take the SAT2s in June to allow for extra time to cover the differences.

Welcome Giveherwingsmom! That’s probably the best screen name that I’ll never type out again.

D said that the math was tough, but she always finds the math tough, so that wasn’t too surprising. I think I’ve sort of mentioned before that she’s a somewhat difficult personality and she came home from the test completely calm and relaxed. Apparently everything went smoothly and nothing happened that set her off, so that’s a major, major positive for her.

for your warm welcome as well as sage advise. Yes, I’m working on GHWSM or GHWM, but you get the idea. I’m glad for this thread.
