Actually, I think St. Mary’s sits on the bank of Wobegon River. That’s where the sailing team practices. ;)

LOL. It does irk me, too. Enough already. We get it. Honors.

DD gets very little mail from the colleges that are mentioned on this thread - your kids get St Mary’s of Maryland, she gets St Mary’s of California. In general, she gets stuff from west of the Rockies with the exception of WUSTL who does seem to be in the business of deforesting the Pacific Northwest.

So I guess there is some targeting going on…

jackie, New College of Florida is also a state-sponsored Honors LAC. In Maryland, the other honors college is UMBC, which runs to the science end of things. (Or at least S1’s friends who went there with merit $$ are all science types).

I know nothing about UMBC. Is it any good?

Yes. UMBC has a science/tech rep. Very good rep, but bent toward science and tech.

It’s also a suitcase/commuter school more than residential.

UMBC gives out lots of merit money, too. S1’s friends who are there don’t go home on weekends.

CountingDown, thanks for the other public honors college. I’ve heard of them but I know D would never go to FL, she thought Palo Alto weather was too boring during a Stanford talk.

There are several merit scholarships at St Mary’s, so any data on them from DB or others who might know of kids attending, would be useful. Also DB anything you glean on the psych dept when you visit is also appreciated.

I confess to giving the 09ers my bookmark to the smileys, so they are all off testing them and driving up their post count. But I don’t mind as it is a good distraction for them during this crucial week. Good luck to all of them!

jackief - my D has received some mail from WUSTL, but she hasn’t been inundated the way QM’s D has. She received that email about the application being available one day last week though. She has also received a number of emails inviting her to visit, but she’s not interested in going to school in St. Louis.

DougBetsy - funny about St. Mary’s sitting on the banks of the Wobegone river after reading Jackief’s comment about the school.

Scualum - I know what you mean - D gets mail from lots of local schools too.

CountingDown - interesting about those scholarship opportunities at UMBC - good to know they’re available.

Bookmark to the smileys?

We know a number of folks who chose UMBC over UMD-CP, often because of UMBC’s smaller size and focus. The Meyerhoff scholars are a very close-knit group, too.

here you go scualum
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/misc.php?do=showsmilies glad to be of service. I also don’t feel bad about littering up the 09 thread since we all had this discussion and testing phase oh maybe 1000 posts ago

LIMOM, I think DB was agreeing with me with a joke with her comment about the river name. I wonder if I’ve jinxed the no mail from WUSTL with my comments? Completely off topic, but we did enjoy our stop through St Louis on our xc trip, H’s great grandfather was a sculptor and did much of the plaster and stone work at many buildings including that famous theater who’s name escapes me, courthouse, some Mason building, and several hotels. Cherubs everywhere.

Jackief - I wouldn’t worry about the no mail from WUSTL. Like I said, D’s received some, but not a lot. Nothing against St. Louis - I’m sure it’s a very nice city - but my D isn’t interested in going to a school that far from home - at least for the moment.

Thanks Jackie

Welcome to the newcomers!

Luckily, H was able to fix the car for less than $20. He tried to explain it to me but, honestly, once I heard that it could be fixed and for cheap, I kind of tuned out. So, it’s fixed!

We also got the WUSL postcard inviting S to apply. My favorite part was this, “Thank you for your interest in Washington University.” I had no idea checked the box on the PSAT that it was okay for colleges to contact you constituted “interest” in a specific college. Imagine that.

Today is S’s first round competition for the one-act play he is in. I can’t help it, my stomach is host to a lot of butterflies today. All the kids work so hard, I coudl never be a judge.

Yeah, D actually said “when did I show any interest?”

PMK–Glad to hear that your car repair wasn’t too costly. Good luck to your son on his drama competition.

D2 has received some mail from WUSTL, but a lot less than D1 used to get…which is just as well since she has no interest in that school. She has also recently received a mailing from St. Mary’s of MD. It sounds like an interesting school. D looked into it, but ultimately ruled it out because its location seemed too isolated and, there didn’t seem to be much in the area other than the school, itself.

Yesterday I was sorting the mail and wondering if there were any schools S2 has not had a mailing from. Guess it mostly comes from his rather generic (current) major of journalism. The mailings were really limited for S1; but then he entered aeronautical engineering for his intended major on the PSATs three years ago.

St. Mary’s of Maryland was the first mailing my daughter got as a sophomore, and I think it looks kind of intriguing.

Awww…son just got a mailer from List College (UG arm of JTS in NYC) and my daughter & her friend (class of '05) are on there in their graduation attire. It’s a tiny photo, but still. It made me smile.

How nice, mommusic. I have to go downstairs to see if I can spot your daughter. D got mail from List last week.
