Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

pugmadkate, I worked on the Obama campaign, too. :)

For anyone who still thinks we’re a conservative school: [YouTube - Nov. 4th 2008 @ Dartmouth College](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsEE9sPvUj4)

Liz, Thank you for shaing that and thank you for the work you did. I cried some happy tears watching that.

We were just at home the night of the election but it was still so exciting. My son and I traveled to DC for the Inauguration. We didn’t have tickets but it was still so wonderful to just be there.

Thank you also for coming back and sharing your experience. I’m so glad that your school turned out to be such a good match. I hope the same for my son, natch.

I love your name. I am a big fan of Tina Fey.

Liz Lemon, I think Barnard sounds perfect for your sis–NYC for the modeling, next door to Columbia, with the nurturing atmosphere of an LAC. Along with Scripps, it is probably one of the most coed women’s colleges in the country.

Liz Lemon, I have to agree that Barnard sounds like it would be a great place for your sister since she wants to stay in NYC.

Glad you’re so happy at Dart, even with the Greek scene. Sounds like you’re having an incredible experience!

Ahem. This liberal Texan also worked for Obama. There are many of us.

Liz, welcome to the thread. Dartmouth is very interesting for my D who is interested in political science/government, along with other things. The greek scene and remoteness from a major airport are the two big concerns we have. She is going to visit in the summer.

What’s it like campaigning for Obama in Texas? Delaware was pretty much guaranteed blue even before Biden got the VP pick, so no interesting drama here (basically they told everyone to go work PA).

I had a great time campaigning in Virginia. I love living in a Battleground State. The city I live in had not voted for a Democrat since the last time Virginia did over 40 years ago… Obama won by 20%!!!

The campaign staff was incredibly friendly. And there was always tons of free food. The Obama campaign actually had several pizzas there every night that the higher ups required be spent on that. There was also snacks during the day that people baked and offered up (delicious stuff!). Likewise, during the DNC the campaign supplied money for beer during the party. Hey, they had the money to do it.

I have you all beat – try campaigning for Obama in UTAH! The reddest state in the country! My yard signs were very lonely… :)

Well, I live in a firmly liberal oasis, so the bulk of my work was in New Mexico. They bused a bunch of us over. It was very exhausting and fun.

My son began his gap year by campaigning for Obama in New Hampshire – Massachusetts really did not need a lot of campaigning. He talked about having the door slammed in his face but also talking with staunch Republicans who only watched Fox News who invited him in to dinner and who changed their minds.

Ah, but that seems a long way off.

Good morning. Who’s kid is taking the ACT on Saturday? Son is.

And then March SAT scores are released on April 7. <gulp></gulp>

I tried to sign D up for the May SAT but the website wouldn’t let me.

Spring Break just ended here & we’re back to early rising & making a lunch every night.

I am feeling strangely out of touch…my S already took the ACT & SAT, his PSAT results were good, not much to do until this summer when I will probably start nagging him to write an essay.

A more pressing concern for me is: How will we survive while they redo our kitchen, starting in a few weeks? :D

…and also the laundry room!

S2 has been so stressed out, I decided to nix our original plan of trying the ACT in April. We’ll decide after we see the SAT results. He’s feeling negative about how he did, so those Naviance circles we’ve been looking at may move in the wrong direction!

How exciting! Good luck!

I’m so jealous. I’ve been wanting to remodel the kitchen/deck/patio for 7 years. H thinks it’s a frivolous project so he would only go along with the idea if I saved enough $$ to pay cash…no loans or credit cards. The economy tanked just as my savings had enough. Now my kitchen money has to make up for losses in the 529’s and other college funds.

I’m not complaining. I know we’re blessed to have this kitchen safety net. But who wouldn’t prefer a healthy economy and a new kitchen at the same time?

Buy the time we’re finished with college (2016) the kitchen will be 23 years old. And at that point, I’ll borrow if I have to!

My S is taking the ACT this Saturday.

And we are also waiting on SAT scores April 7.

Well, my S was busy writing the application essay for the competitive summer engineering program at UCLA. It was a good sneak preview of what he’ll need to be doing for college essays. The topic was very generic.

Meanwhile, his calculus teacher shared with us the reference letter to the program that he wrote for S. If our S doesn’t get in, it won’t be because of this letter!

His capper was from the regional math competition, where he and his teammate (a senior) placed first in the calculus competition. Of course, this means more competition and please don’t have it be scheduled for when our NorCal college trip is planned. This is during spring break so perhaps he’ll catch a break.

QueensMom, I hope the website works for you soon…the deadline is tomorrow, isn’t it?

My D is taking subject tests in May. Hopefully that will conclude the testing, depending on scores from March SAT. Actually, I’m almost positive that will conclude the testing. Enough is enough!! 0_o

DougBetsy–we are NOT borrowing or putting any of the kitchen on credit! So we are fortunate in that respect, tho in this economy I still have a nagging feeling we might be going out on a limb here. But we’re supposed to spend to help the economy, right? :)

Over the weekend S heard he was accepted to the Rose-Hulman Operation Catapult summer program. 1st session. Yay! So now we can plan the rest of our summer.
