Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

jackief: the math and history subject test books from college board consist of two tests for each test. problem is, one of the tests is identical to the one in the book on all subject tests. so basically, if you are contemplating buying the math subject book, and your kid is only taking one of the math tests, all you will get out of the book is one extra subject test.

there is no content discussed in any of those books.

vp- thanks that’s the kind of info I was looking for! Are there explanations for the answers?

YDS:

Wow, pages missing AND wrong answers? Yikes. And yet, with the hyper concentration on these standarized tests, there’s a huge market for these books.

Well, the '09 list is far in front of us, as predicted. However, they are now trading stories on whether it was better to be a Camp Fire Girl or a Girl Scout!

Now’s a good time to check the web sites to see when colleges (or groups of colleges) are having road shows in your local area. We’re blessed to be in the LA region. However, I’m still slightly annoyed that a few my S is interested in say they are coming to the LA area, but haven’t determined when. It’s TBD … TBD on their travel budget, I wonder?

FAP, I confess I participated in the Camp Fire vs. Girl Scout debate over there with at least one post… but in general I think they are running out of steam  and we’ll overtake them again before school gets out!

Actually we got started on a topic yesterday that could fill pages - dinner…

No more off topic than Girl scouts vs Campfire girls.

jackief: I don’t think so but I’ll check my D’s history book and correct myself if they do have explanations. BTW, it isn’t Euro history, it is World History SAT. There is no Euro SAT.

FAP, I know! I doubted the guy at B&N would take the book back because ds already had ripped out a practice test, but when I showed the guy how poorly put together it was, he marked it damaged and gave a refund.

There were no bubble pages to mark your answers. I was willing to live with it. But …

An example of an error in it was, like:

Question: blah blah blah

Answers:

A) 1
B) 2
C) 3
D) 4
E) 5

And then the given correct answer was B) 4. So which was it, B) or 4???

Another question ds was convinced didn’t have the right answer among the choices. He probably was wrong, but with all the other problems, who knew? It was difficult to trust it at that point.

I was a one-year Girl Scout. But was a camp counselor at a Camp Fire Girl camp and quit after a week!

thanks for the correction vp. I would be interested in it for the USH practice tests, not the ā€œotherā€ one so trying to gauge the usefulness in that context.

I used Princeton Review for Lit and Barrons for Math II–didn’t do all of the Math II book, but I thought both were useful.

vp or anyone else, does the history book from CB duplicate any of the tests in the complete subject test book?

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear earlier. Yes, there will be two US history subject tests in the history book. one of them is identical to the one in the complete subject test book. so if you have the complete subject test book you are only going to get one additional US history subject test. same is true for the world history subject tests and the math subject tests.

what a gip! thanks for the info!

Hmm, maybe I’ll return the Barron’s books I got yesterday! I also got the college board ones. Subject tests are always tricky. My kids both did the same thing - US History (since they were in APUSH), Math 2 (in pre-calc or calc) and whichever science they were currently enrolled in. Of course S2 has the problem of whether to Bio-E or Bio-M. He thinks Bio-E looks easier (he’s done Ecology for Science Olympiad), but his AP teacher says all the 800s in his class have come from kids who chose Bio-M.

Thanks for the reminder - I need to pick up review books for APs and SAT IIs. So far, all D has is one for AP Statistics.

on the second page we were again! D is doing one science section tonight and getting a good night’s sleep. Says she doesn’t want to do more, but I want her to look over some writing tips posted here once which I saved off. Of course, she did have some to upload facebook photos… So good night and good luck everyone.

And best of luck from me as well to all the ACT test takers tomorrow AM…

As we speak, D is at the ACT.
I wonder who is eating all of the pristine #2 pencils that I buy every year? There are hundreds of pencils in the house, with fairies, star wars, happy birthday, but where are the ticondarogas that no one wants to use?

Friday administration of the ACT? How did that happen?

I was going to sign up S2 for the ACT, but I’m glad I didn’t he’s out partying - first day of Spring Break! He deserves it, though it’s not going to be much of a break. Papers to write, APs to study for, community service to get out of the way so that he can skip gov next year…

scualum-- sorry to mislead, it’s already Saturday here in Asia…

wonder what the number code is on top of my post? me too.

wow, now the post is possessed when I try to edit it. wonder where it will put this update…
