Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Two years ago we had snow at the END of April. That shocked even me.

Hmm, so it was a wooden pencil, and somehow that was an issue that went all the way to ETS headquarters. Weird.

There was snow over the weekend in Williamstown.

What I don’t get is how did they know? I mean, he moaned about having the wrong pencil type - but I assume he had more than one. How did the administrator of the test know that he used the wrong pencil.

The letter reads like something from Faber College - is he on double secret probation now?

In the early 1980s, I lived in Albany, NY for 2.5 years. I came from the Seattle area, so their winters we something for me to behold. After my DH to be finished grad school, I was planning to leave the area but waited until April to buy my first new car, figuring it would be after snow storms, right? Wrong! It dumped 15 inches one day about a week after I got the new car. I hadn’t had time to get the snow shovel for the car either …

Faber College perhaps wants everyone to use Faber pencils (to improve their endowment?). :)

YDS – S2 will be at Carleton in the morning! Will get a weather report. Wonder if he will check his SAT scores before going to campus.

Wasn’t Faber College the one in ā€˜Animal House’?

I am dorky/couldn’t sleep so I got up at 5am just to check SAT scores:

Total 2310
800 CR
710 M
800 W (80 MC + 11 essay)

Remarkably similar scores to my PSAT prediction (228 but a bubble error in W brought me down -3).

And now, I pose to the 2010 CC parents the most dramatic question of all: should I retake? Entering as English major but with CS as secondary interest, aiming at top schools.

Congrats and no retake!!

FAP, I can’t wait to hear how he liked it.

Was it Faber College, or Dean Faber? Been a long time since I saw that movie. :)

Don’t retake. That’d be ridiculous.

Congratulations!

Wow, K, awesome score!! Congratulations!

We still have a good bit of snow in our backyard. One year we went up to our cabin in June and had an unusually warm day - 90 degrees. The kids ran out in the woods, found some snow, and had a snowball fight!

Every spring, a local convenience store holds a contest to see who can guess what date the snow in their sideyard will totally disappear.

Well, looks like the unauthorized pencil was also a bad luck pencil: 1720
CR 590 (PSAT = 65)
M 590 (PSAT = 62)
W 540 (WTH?!?! 2 practices flirted with 700 and 1 was 710)

We’re almost back to the drawing board on the college list. We based it on the PSAT and were hoping for a 1200 first try SAT. Now the second try goal of 1300 seems like a long shot. :o What were matches are now reaches; reaches are off the table.

Definitely gonna cancel the Bucknell visit on Friday. Maybe use that day for TCNJ or St. Mary’s of MD. I need to discuss with H, who’s out of town. Son isn’t even aware scores came out today. I guess he’ll see when he checks his email this evening, right? (I got the scores by logging in.)

Sigh. Maybe Saturday’s ACT will be a bright spot.

ETA: Great job, Keilexandra!

Keil, do not retake! If you want people to prod you inthat direction, go over to the student section! Although we do enjoy having your perspective here (and you too Liz)

DB- sorry for the dissapointment on the scores, rooting for the ACT to be better.

I have a report from our admissions panel to post, I will do that later this morning.

I liked the unauthorized pencil stuff. D brings a bunch of wooden pencils and one mechanical with her. I think she uses the mechanical for the essay. She prefers mechanicals and uses them in school.

It is Dean Wermer(sp?) at Faber College.

oh yes, and I still have some snow in my front yard but I got the back yard all raked last weekend, I do not mind as the snow gradually melts as I don’t have the whole lawn as potential work at once. And raked out the flower beds and part of the garden. And took down the Christmas lights. yay. Snow will probably be gone earlier than last year, when I had to shovel it out of the front lawn and truck it in wheel barrows elsewhere to start on the grass…

Might be Dean Wormer…

(that’s funny to those of us living in developing countries who take worm medicine…)

P’10 here. I haven’t posted for a long time.

DougBetsy – I think he should retake. Take a look at the score report when it becomes available in April to find out the problem areas in Writing. With a retake, I suspect that he can equal his PSAT scores. Don’t cancel colleges that look like a good match based on his PSAT scores.

Keil – No need to retake. Congratulations! You can focus on other parts of the application now.

DB … you are 20 points off the 1200. Don’t sweat it, don’t cancel the trips. Do some tutoring, do a retake. My S1 went up nearly 200 points with tutoring. S2 just saw a 60 point jump in the math with some concentrated work. And GPA’s important too. Our college counselor is still saying Bucknell is a match for our son, who was below 1200 on his first SAT sitting, and has gone over on this one. That’s based on GPA incorporated into the Naviance scattergrams for our school.

Congrats on the great score, Keilexandra - and no retake!

DougBetsy - sorry your son’s SAT score wasn’t quite what you hoped for - I’ll cross my fingers for better results on the ACT.

YDS - it was Faber College, Dean Wormer - not sure why I know this…lol.

Keil, given your list of schools I think you are fine, if you were doing cs at MIT or CMU I’d say up the math.

I’m happy with S2’s scores - he’ll retake in June, but they are a great start. He got 790 CR (Yay!), 670 M, 670 W, 8 essay (he really needs to leave time for proofreading). They certainly don’t need to change the tentative list of reaches (which are based on his less than stellar GPA anyway.)

Thanks for the reassurance, everyone. Yes, he’ll definitely retake at the earliest Fall sitting. And tutoring has been in the plan for 2nd attempt since the beginning.

I haven’t canceled Bucknell. But we are now double-booked for St. Mary’s the same day. H, Son and I will discuss it all then cancel one or the other. I’m leaning toward St. Mary’s now and Bucknell in the fall. (H is unavailable for our original St. Mary’s date of 4/18 so having him along on 4/10 is appealing. Then we could use 4/18 for the safety Salisbury OH.)

:)

Yay Keil!! So glad to hear your news.

DB, the fall is a long way away and I’d bet that the scores are where you want by then.

2070 here, although I don’t know the breakdown. Not sure what D’s going to do since she’s not really going to reach. I think I’ll leave it to her.
