Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

Wow, jackie, look how many posts Latin prompted! We’ll close within 400 in no time.

YDS I think I get what you are saying now  Your S will be in Vergil next year but because they call his current AP Latin Lit class AP Latin IV, they will call his Vergil class AP Latin Vergil V or something like that even though others doing the same class will call it AP Latin Vergil IV. Wow…

Thanks LIMOM. Many of her friends got their scores today also and are happy with their results. She says she wants to do June. I said it ain’t free, but she can do it if she wants, but I won’t sign her up until May and be sure she is still sure.

LOL about the interest in Latin.
Truly nothing that I can add to this discussion, but can boost the count.

I guess I was wrong about the Latin popularity!! Ok bring on the next oddball AP test?

YDS, I happened to call the CollegeBoard yesterday to ask the same question-about adding an SAT 2 in May. The woman told me to have my S just mention to the proctor before the testing starts that he wants to add a test. They’ll get a short break between the tests and the CB will just bill you for the extra test-I believe it’s an additional $9.

I guess the ACT is really S’s test. This time his composite was the same as in December – 34 (hurray!), although the scores were different. He really wanted a 35 this time, but got hung up a bit on the science section.

His SAT scores from December to March only increased by a total of 30. He made it to 2100 on the March test, so I was pretty pleased with that, although he is not happy with it. I am hoping we can be done with the big tests.

He still has 3 APs and 3 SAT IIs to look forward to between May 2nd and 12th. I cringe every time I think about what his scores may be. His APUSH teacher has never taught the class before, and let’s just say the kids are not getting much out of the class. The AP Calculus BC teacher has been dealing with a major health problem for most of the year, has been in and out of the hospital several times, and has missed probably half of the days since Christmas. The sub has a PhD in math but does not teach at all like the teacher. S came home the other day saying “we are all just screwed.” Can’t imagine the AP test results for either of these classes will be what they usually are.

And as I have said, it’s almost impossible to get him to do any outside studying on his own.

Ok… so we are looking at revising the college list. Wider net, anyone?
I am trying really hard to “love the kid on the couch”. That is my new mantra. I keep reminding myself that in a year’s time this will all be behind us, he will be getting ready to take off on his own, and it will be out of my hands.

Darn… now where is that crystal ball?..

Thanks! I’m panicking a bit about him just having two. I have no idea what the third one would be for him since they don’t offer the always-popular LATIN in May. He’s pulling a 97 in AP Physics B this semester; maybe that’s a candidate.

If you take two on one day and don’t do well on one of them, can you just send in the one good one?

Yes, with score choice you can pick and choose among the SAT2’s unless of course the college says you can’t. Physics is probably a decent choice if he’s in Physics B. He could take it third. I think he can even cancel the physics score and not the other two if he thinks he hasn’t done well enough.

Bengal, I am so feeling you at this moment.

In order to get the answer to the Latin question, I logged on to the online report card. Today is last day of this reporting period and, well, YIKES!!! I do hope these scores are before low grades are dropped. In a way, maybe it’ll make life easier. My friend says the whole college search gets infinitely easier if you lower your expectations. :frowning: Those borderline reaches are quickly becoming pipe dreams.

Just to clarify: He already has Math II under his belt, so adding the second test in May would be his third total. I was just thinking, “What if he wants to add some reach that requires three tests?” But maybe that won’t be the case (see previous post :frowning: ).

Good point, Youdon’tsay. And I could use a bit more of the “easier” about now.

S will be taking the three SAT IIs that correspond to his three AP classes – APUSH, Calc BC (Math2), and Chemistry.

We thought he could get them all out of the way at once, and with score choice, hopefully he can pick his best 2 to send to schools (that’s assuming there IS a “best 2”)
:)

More Latin talk :o

I edited this because for some reason I thought he was thinking of adding Math 1 which didn’t make sense…

YDS- I think he is fine with 2, if anything add Physics. If there is a school that requires 3, he can take maybe Eng Lit or a science in the fall or Latin next December? That shouldn’t be too late if it isn’t for early… For my D, she really had to bone up on Latin vocab as that wasn’t really tested much in her classes, she was great on the grammar.

You can use score choice within sittings, but you can only cancel one entire sitting at a time. So if he thinks he might want to cancel Physics, he should take it by itself.

S2 is so funny. He’d asked me to get him some more books from the library today. He started skimming one and groans, “oh no this is bad”. So why is it bad? It’s bad because it’s too interesting and he’d actually like to read the book instead of searching for good quotes. (The book is transcripts of tapes from the Kennedy White House on the Cuban Missile Crisis.)

LIMOMOF2: Every student in Tennessee has to take the ACT’s. It’s a graduation requirement. That’s one of the reasons why the kids are all taking the test, in school, this coming Wednesday. Seniors will be out of the building completing their job shadowing; freshmen & sophomores will be on field trips. There will be a mass exodus of Juniors when the ACT is completed :)

SATs/SATIIs: DD is registered for the May 2nd admin also. Figure the studying will tie in nicely with her 4/22 ACT’s. Haven’t registered for the SAT II’s yet; 2 schools on her list need them (Princeton and Northwestern) but she’s not committed yet. I think we’re going to go get pedicures tomorrow afternoon so maybe when she’s stuck in the chair, I’ll nag her, I mean ask her again :)

Younger DD (and I) will be at Destination Imagination state finals tomorrow. I can see the light at the end of the school year tunnel and I can’t wait for things to wind down so we have some “free time” again, at least in theory.

mathmom - oh, no - a good book! What a shame! LOL

Keilexandra - I didn’t realize that about SAT IIs.

BengalMom - congrats to you and your S on his great ACT score, and the increase in his SAT score. I know it’s only a small increase, but it still sounds good.

RobD - I have so much to learn - what exactly is Destination Imagination?

Wow about the ACT being mandated by the state. New York doesn’t require either the SAT or the ACT, though most kids at D’s school take both.

My D plans to take the May 2nd SAT IIs in Math 2 and US History. No studying has taken place yet, but I asked her nicely to give her practice tests a try tonight if she’s not going out with friends. She said “maybe.” You probably already know this, but Princeton requires 3 SAT IIs. My D is also thinking of applying there.

RobD, good luck to your dd. Ds1 did DI in fifth grade!

LI (I’m just shortening this from now on  Destination Imagination is a problem solving competition (see IDODI ) Younger DD has done DI since 4th grade with a break in 6th grade. Her team has been to state finals every year and to global finals twice. The team has decided that even if they place high enough this year, that they won’t go to globals. They’re kind of done with DI. Really good program though; I think the kids get a lot of great experiences out of it. Last year they were ambassadors to a team from Turkey.

and yes, I know that Princeton requires 3. I’m hoping that she takes 2 in June and then one in the Fall. By the fall, her decision will have been made about whether or not she’s applying. I’m actually thinking her decision will be made end of May/beginning of June when she visits Princeton during her NYC chorus trip.
