Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

We’ve got a college tour road trip planned for June: Roanoke, Elon, High Point, WFU (with interview), W&M self-guided, Richmond (with interview), and UVa (driveby).

Son is applying to the FBI’s Furtura Agents in Training camp. Will find out in June if he’s among the 40 accepted. He really needs to get a job, too. But, if those prospects dim (and they’re not looking great) he’ll ramp up his Red Cross work. Both kids will attend the XC team retreat.

Wow, some great summer plans here! My D will be working as a camp counselor - the same job she had last summer - unless a better opportunity turns up. She’ll also do some Commuity Service and hang out with friends. We’ll visit a few more colleges, and hopefully fit in a few interviews, and if things go according to plan, she’ll try to get a headstart on those apps and essays.

DS’s 2&3 (twins) have very different summer plans, as they are very different children.
One will be at Northwestern for their fantastic summer theater program, and the other will be interning in a clinical lab setting with an MD who is a leader in the field of ALS research.
The rest of the summer will be filled with SAT prep, working on the common app and squeezing in some college visits to school which open before our high school starts up again.

D is taking Intro to Chinese at Brown for 4 weeks… mainly for the fun of it! I think it’s a good opportunity for her to get a taste of college life while studying something she loves. Afterwards, she will be working ( locally) for 4 weeks, and then we take a beach-type family trip before school starts.

D has an internship, assisting with (psychology) research, at a local college, which she’s planning to incorporate into part of her senior/grad. project.

She was originally hoping to be selected for Governor’s School, but back in February (about 3 weeks after the application deadline) Gov. School was eliminated from our state budget. Anyway, she’s looking forward to the internship and staying close to home will give her the opportunity get going sooner on her college apps. and hopefully an interview or two.

He’s still waiting to hear on applications, but S will be involved with some kind of summer lab work in the engineering/science arena. Once we have the particulars, I’ll report back. This will be for about eight weeks. We’re have a short interlude for a vacation to see the family in WA. He needs to be back in town before the end of August, since water polo turn outs begin. In between all that, he’ll need to complete whatever summer work is assigned for his AP classes.

S will be spending a week at the end of June at a UMD Journalism program, then working at a day camp for a month. Then we go off on a two-week vacation, and he’ll spend the rest of the summer getting his college applications started (or so we’ve told him, anyway…)

IloveLA - D did CTY for four years (Hopkins, F&M and then two years at Dickinson) and absolutely loved it. Which campus is your D going to?

D1 will be finishing a CIT program and will then excitedly graduate to paid staff for the end of the summer. We will fit in some college visits and interviews also.

D2 is going on a trip to the Grand Canyon, and then doing assistant counselor type things for the remainder.

And we will spend as much time at the beach as we can fit in! :D

FindAPlace - I forgot all about summer AP work. D’s taking 6 APs next semester! Hope that doesn’t mean her summer’s going to be ruined! I know the bulk of her summer
AP work the last two years was for AP Euro and then APUSH, so maybe it won’t be so bad.

D already knows what the summer work for AP English Lit will be, and I don’t expect the other classes will have much prep work. Here’s hoping. I also have another update on the course scheduling for next year, but was waiting for the summer plans reporting (and now the AP summer work reporting) to finish so it won’t get buried.

LIMOMOF2:

LOL! I’m sure my S would rather forget about having to do summer AP work as well, especially in AP English Lit. When I pointed out to him there was no way of getting past senior year English without some kind of lit class, he bite the bullet and decided to take AP since his favorite English teacher is teaching it. This lack of joy regarding lit gets reflects on his CR score …

IloveLA:

CTY has been running at Loyola Marymount U, which is where my S attended for a few years. Is this the site you’ve used as well? It’s a nice campus for CTY to use, nicely maintained, excellent sports facilities, well contained (not too big), easy access to LAX.

D is going to at least one, possibly two, debate camps where she will work on improving her debate skills and start research on next year’s policy debate topic. At the end of it she will come home with one or two rubbermaid tubs full of research papers and index cards with ‘talking points’ on poverty and why the US government should…or should not…substantially increase its efforts in that department. She will continue arguing that topic for the rest of the school year.

FAP, Booklady, I PM’d you rather than revealing top-secret location
But I will say for anyone considering CTY, she’s been to Lancaster and Loyola, and loved them both.

I wish no one had mentioned the AP summer work. :(

FindAPlace - I’m sure my D hasn’t given a thought to the summer AP work - and she’s taking AP Lit too, so I’m sure they’ll have some work for that class. Not sure about the rest though.

I’m a parent of a '09er but came across this deal, thought I would pass it along to you '10ers out there:

[Campus Visit – Amtrak 2 for 1 Deal](http://www.campusvisit.com/amtrak/)

Amtrak has announced it will offer 50% discount fares to high school juniors and seniors traveling to prospective college campuses this fall. With the start of a new school year just around the corner, millions of American high school students will soon be visiting colleges throughout the nation trying to decide where to continue their education. Amtrak hopes their new Campus Visit Discount Coupon program will help make those often stressful trips more convenient and economical.

IloveLA - got your PM, thanks.

JerseyShoreMom - yes, that’s a great deal: D and H used it four years ago when D was looking at colleges. Also, Amtrak has a special student program that has saved D (and us!) some money over the years: [Amtrak - Student Advantage](http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/am2Copy/Title_Image_Copy_Page&c=am2Copy&cid=1083262194405)

I am not sure what S will be doing this summer. He is still waiting to hear from a summer program, and he also applied for a summer job.
I hope he has time to go to the beach and enjoy himself before the fall madness starts.
I never heard of AP summer work, but it makes sense for AP Lit. to have summer work.

Thank you JerseyshoreMon for the info.

Summer AP work -

DD will get out of school in mid June - and then they changed the school calendar and she returns early August. I guess she will be taking it with her on her summer program…

D is going to be a counselor at a camp; go to a one week tech camp at a college. Hopefully we can fit in a vacation in there somewhere. I know I need one…and of course, the common app comes out in August.

I told DS that this is THE last easy summer for him before he retires.

So, we are sending him for a 5 weeks abroad trip with some spending money. Once he gets back, he will be busy.

Stanford SCEA is due 11/1.
