Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

DH will be in Japan for business, S1 is in Chicago and it will be Scav Hunt, so he will be on another planet and not remember, and S2 will be studying for APs.

Think I will take myself out to dinner and buy some shoes!

jackief – you will probably see some strange goings-on if you are at UChicago the day before Mother’s Day! Scav Hunt is a HUGE deal there.

Rob, Wow, that is early. My S gets out the following week. His cousins who live in the Northeast are jealous. Of course, at the end of the summer, my S is the one who is jealous.

I had that “wow, we’re really starting senior year” feeling at NHS as well. I didn’t expect to feel that way. It was a little sad but mostly exciting.

Wait, think of it this way…a year from today, we’ll all know where our kids are going to college.

Whoa.

thanks for the tip CD, but we are going on mother’s day and the visit day is Monday. Scavenger Hunt would be fun to see, maybe there will be remnants around.

Remnants:
People sleeping in the Reg, empty cans of Red Bull, fabric, wood scraps and leftover pieces of nuclear reactors in the common areas…

can’t wait! :o

Whip cracker for SAT and AP, huh jackief?

I guess I don’t have to crack any whips with my son. We finally had the transmission fixed on the BMW. I told my S that, perhaps on Sunday (since he’s doing a SAT brain dump on Saturday) we could start teaching him how to drive the stick shift, since this will be the main car he drives. He already has his DL. He demurred, saying he’d rather wait until after all his APs are done. He has 4: AP English, APUSH, AP Physics C (two tests), and soon he’ll get the final for the online linear algebra class.

When is Mother’s Day? I’m expecting my annual breakfast in bed. :)

Ds is spending the night before the SAT IIs in deep preparation – NOT. He’s at a club listening to a bunch of bands from his HS. Sounds fun. One of them, which I heard last weekend, is actually quite good. But it’s an early night. The showcase is over at 8, so he’ll have plenty of time to prepare mentally.

He’s still trying to decide whether to add Physics at the last minute. Anyone know where to get a test that he can look over and see whether it’s a good idea???

Hey, I got that MIT poster too. As an English major. Caltech, too. I guess tech schools are just that desperate for girls? PSAT math was 710, decently but hardly impressive.

Keilexandra - I believe MIT’s gender ratio is getting closer to 50/50, maybe 45/55, women to men, so probably not quite desperate for girls.

I’ve been putting aside t-shirts for a t-shirt quilt too, but I still don’t have the motivation to get started. I won’t mind cutting it and piecing it, but I hate putting it all together. I have several unfinished quilts - fully pieced, basted, partially quilted, or even fully quilted, just waiting for the binding. I’m not especially crafty, but I like the practical nature of quilts.

No Mother’s Day plans yet, but will likely spend it with my H and kids, plus part of the day with my mom and part with H’s mom.

MIT’s ratio is one of the best among peers, but they have to work hard for it. From anecdotal evidence at my math/sci high school, it is significantly easier for high-achieving girls to get in.

I read somewhere(forget where) that MIT’s acceptance level is like 11% for boys and 29% for girls
CalTech’s is simiilar

Caltech explicitly disregards gender (and race) in admissions, which accounts for its atrocious ratio–it still stands, though, that the girls who apply would be very self-selected.

Good Luck to all whose kids are taking SAT’s and Subject Tests Today. For some reason, I havent seen DS with SAT materials, I however do see AP stuff. Hope he doesnt have it mixed up which one he is taking. LOL…(walks to kitchen counter) Oh…SAT Admission ticket is gone!..Yeah, he is good to go!

When we got in the car this AM, I asked S if he had everything? Ticket, pencils, calculator, snack? No snack & then of course didn’t feel there was anything “Good” to take. I suggested a package of Pop Tarts, so he ran back into the house & grabbed them. And so it begins, our college search for our youngest child out of four! Gosh, so far he has been easier than his 3 sisters! Has already stated “rural” in NE, NY or PA.

good luck to the test takers. Look forward to hearing how it goes, esp the subject tests that many of the others will be taking next month.

DD is off to SATs.

the pillowcase quilt has a much better chance of being completed than a real quilt.

and I will be going to see Spinal Tap: Unwigged & Unplugged on Mother’s Day evening with my older DD :)

off to get a haircut…

double good luck to our SAT test takers!

DS was surprisingly up early and with turkey bacon, waffle in hand. it’s off to the 10 section race. He’s the last of 3 and was the baby who curled up on the bed and just fell asleep all by himself (dr. brazelton would be proud!).

So, it begins…he’s your average student who works hard, dealt with auditory processing problems in elementary school but keeps on ticking.

RobD - cool way to spend Mother’s Day evening! :)

DD overslept a bit this morning - only 10 minutes, but she’d only allowed herself half an hour to begin with, so that was pushing things for her. Anyway, she made it with about 4 minutes to spare, so that worked out. Hopefully, she wasn’t feeling too stressed from the rushing around this morning. She really didn’t do any prep - just one practice test for each exam, plus the handful of practice questions CB has online. There just wasn’t enough time with all the other things on her plate.

Just checked MIT’s Common Data Set - most recent stats are from 2007-2008, and they had 8919 male applicants and accepted 813 of them, and 3526 female applicants and accepted 740 of them, so it looks like the percentage of women who get accepted is just over 20%, while the percentage of men who got accepted was just under 10%. Not sure why I bothered checking, since none of the young women here are interested in MIT anyway…lol. Neither is my D.

ETA: Good luck to all of today’s test takers!

Yeah, good luck to all test takers! D is focused on her AP exams. She took some practice tests and is somewhat alarmed to find out that there were several calculus problems that gave her trouble. The teacher tells them they only need to get 60% to get a 5 on the AB Calc exam, but that doesn’t sound right. Maybe he is just trying to allay anxieties.

DD seemed calm, confident, and cheerful at breakfast this morning before heading off for the SATs, a good sign. She’s been working on her math, hoping to bring up that side. Flat nailed the CR last time. The math practice tests have been going well and she brushed up on a few things she was a little rusty on. Math will never be her strong suit but she can be quite good at it when she’s focused; it just doesn’t interest her much, so what she knows has a tendency to get stored away in some rarely visited corner of her brain where it can be difficult to retrieve when she needs it. But her math prep has been much more focused this time, probably because she’d like to make this her last SAT I. I reminded her, though, that if need be there are still two test dates in the Fall that would produce scores in time for ED at her top school. She’d like to save those for possible re-takes of any SAT IIs she’s planning for June. But the way she approaches these things, I thought it best to remind her that today’s test, while important, doesn’t need to be for all the marbles: “Just do your best, be focused, and be lucky!”

Best of luck to all on today’s SAT I and IIs!
