Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

YDS - good luck to your DS on tomorrow’s test. D is going to an APUSH review tonight too - her first one. Not the first one held, just the first one she’s attending as most of her nights have been booked over the past few weeks.

Some middle schoolers pulled the fire alarm during the AP Stats test today! They figured out who did it. Silly kids, they did it on a rainy day not a sunny day. I don’t know if the kids finished the test afterwards or will have to take the makeup. It was around 1:45 so I think the test should have been almost over, right?

Don’t think there have been any applications to either of those southern schools from our school, but I want to visit Memphis some day after reading all those John Grisham novels :)

Eep, jackief, I bet the high schoolers were pretty annoyed… I know I would be furious.

I definitely will NOT be able to visit either Rhodes or Hendrix before application time. Neither is in reasonable driving distance, and my parents will be difficult sells to begin with. Thus, I search the web for “fit”… applying unseen, I am inclined to only pick one out of Rhodes/Hendrix (looked at Centre and Millsaps and others, but they have even more cons).

Thinking about Knox, too. It’s further north, seems to be less conservative/Greek, but I don’t really understand its “vibe” yet. The maximum merit aid is also barely enough to match my 100% need schools, so is it worth applying? Seems like a lot of the best merit aid programs (and for my situation, it has to be close to full tuition) are down South or at large universities.

D is not going to take any SATs in June. Test day is right before final exams, and she wants to be fresh for those.

Besides, since she is in IB classes for the SAT II subjects that she would take, she doesn’t think she has had enough of the material. When do IB kids take SAT II’s? They are supposed to be learning stuff until the second semester of senior year starts.

K, my D was really turned on by Colgate when we visited, which surprised me because I didn’t think she would like the greek presence there. We walked by the frat row several times from the Inn to the campus, and saw some typical aftermath from the previous weekend, plus our tour guide was kind of stereotypical sorority type.

What made me more willing to consider it was- most of the kids don’t live in the houses, and don’t until they are upper classmen. The police logs in the paper were pretty tame, even though there was a sorority suspension last term. The desk clerk at the inn had very positive things to say about the town/gown relationship, and with the Inn so close to the houses, I think she would have had differing opinions if it were very wild.

So although I went to a school with a big greek presence and don’t think it would be the best fit for her, I think this particular case might not be too bad. Plus there was enough other stuff happening on campus to give alternatives to parties each weekend. We saw other examples of schools where the social life did seem to be more greek-oriented.

So what I’m saying is that it is possible to get different experiences from schools with such a big greek presence. I know cur’s D is in a sorority. You might want to send him a PM and get some more feedback. From what he has said about his D’s experiences, if it has the course offerings you want it sounds like a great choice.

jackief - must have been something in the air today! There were some annoying things going on at D’s school during the AP Stats exam today too. D called to say she was done around 4:30 or so. She seemed okay with the exam - except for the disturbances which were really bad.

Yes, it’s Barnard. <sigh> She really loved that school.</sigh>

D’s AP World teacher is giving them lots of review homework and D says it is very helpful, so that’s good.

LIMOM, the CB website says for the afternoon tests “Afternoon - 12 noon” what time did the test start for your D and how long was the test? 4:30 would cut into sports and I don’t think any test is given that late. I see the second Physics C test is listed starting at 2 but we don’t currently offer that, starting next year.

Keilexandra - I didn’t necessarily mean that you should visit before applying - I meant before accepting, if it turns out that either of those schools makes you an offer that’s hard to refuse.

And I agree with jackief - greek presence will vary from campus to campus.

Jackief - I believe they started the test at 12:45 - not sure why. And yes, she missed her sports - but it was raining anyway.

so nice to have a sport which gets canceled in the rain (actually D2’s tennis match was canceled, but D1 will row in anything short of lightning or gale winds)

Well, it’s been raining her on and off for days, and the fields are getting flooded. Normally, it takes thunder to get a game canceled.

jackief:

I did crew at the UW. Believe me, you don’t want to be on the water when there is lightening about.

In our town, the slightest downpour and they close the soccer fields for a day or so. It’s always amazed me. I talked to the parks people and they mumble something abut field maintenance. I don’t know what these fields are made of but the other cities don’t react this way.

I was amazed (gotta remember I’m from the great Pacific Northwet) when I lived in upstate NY and saw what little it took to shut down co-ed softball games. I told them if we did that where I came from, the season would never get started!

FAP- I totally agree, but they do row in non-electrical rainstorms. Last fall at their preseason camp they got caught in a flash lightening storm and crashed a couple boats getting them to the shore!

We also have a new $$ turf $$ field so the field sports don’t have as many cancellations.

enough 09 margaritas for me, heading to bed!

Nighty-night, jackief.

good night, Jackief.

Does anyone know anything about Pitzer. They sent D something today, but I know next to nothing about it.

Pfitzer comes up regularly as one of the less difficult to get into Claremont Consortium colleges. It has the reputation of being the “hippiest” among the bunch. See this thread: <a href=“Pomona, HMC, CMC, Pitzer, Scripps - Pomona College - College Confidential Forums”>Pomona, HMC, CMC, Pitzer, Scripps - Pomona College - College Confidential Forums;

PS We got the same mailing along with two of the same mailing from Claremont McKenna.

I feel totally left out of all these college mailings. I am impressed how much difference it makes whether you check one little box on the PSAT/SAT exams. The only colleges that send my D mail are the ones she has initiated contact with. Not even one little postcard from WUSTL!

vp, it might just take time. Ds just yesterday got the MIT mailing everyone was talking about last week.

scualum, that story was awful. ;)

i got the MIT mailing.
i find it funny, ive gotten nearly hundreds of very nice brochures that i never even asked for…
yet, when i specifically requested info from a few colleges-i’ve gotten nothing. and i’ve given them about 6 weeks…

quite the paradox
