Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

rocket6louise: Great visit report. Nothing like a full day visit, to experience first hand the full variety of offerings- sitting in on a class, sampling the food, roaming around the theater, talking to students, and turtle-watching.

Anybody have opinions about Case Western Reserve University?

^ It is often compared, unfavorably, to the University of Rochester. Both focus on science and engineering with strong pre-med, but Rochester has stronger humanities programs. Case has been trying to improve its humanities and social sciences, but remains male-dominated in gender balance and is still considered a ā€œtechyā€ school. Size is that of a typical small U.

It seems like a lot of the well-regarded (but not ā€˜tippy top’) universities like Rochester, Rice, Case Western, WUSTL, Emory, Carnegie Mellon, emphasize their strength in science, engineering and pre-med programs.

There seem to be fewer counterparts that emphasize their strength in the humanities. Georgetown is one. Are there others? I realize that humanities is considered the traditional strength of LAC’s. But my D, while interested in humanities, is not too keen on LACs. Would love some recommendations.

^ Yale comes to mind, but that probably doesn’t help much.

^^ Yeah that is one. There are one or two others that would also be similarly nice. Just looking for a few more.

How about American? Brandeis to a lesser extent in that it emphasizes how good they are at science too. Maybe Tufts. Maybe U. of Chicago. We are looking at large LACs and small unis for history/international relations.

Oh, Chicago definitely. Maybe Columbia too, with the Core.

Columbia is on her list for now, but she’s trying to avoid NYC (she loves the city but feels it would dilute campus life). She will almost certainly apply to Chicago too. She likes the idea of a core curriculum. We’ll look into Tufts, American, Brandeis. Thanks!

Thanks K, and VP. My 15 minute infatuation with Case Western is subsiding. (I ran across the dreaded ā€œwork hard, play hardā€ description.) Daughter wants strong math and science, plus the opportunity to keep studying Latin. Loves Berkeley, and she’s intrigued by Carleton but nervous about the cold. Will also apply to other UC’s but I don’t think she has a safety she loves.

Forgot to add that my friend’s daughter is at Tufts and loves it.

Close friend’s D attends Case Western and loves it. She is a dual major in Dance & Cognitive Science and could not be happier. Her Mom did tell me that her classes are more demanding and more is expected of her than was of her sister who just finished up at a top Ivy.

For humanities, besides HYPS, I’d say definitely Chicago, Brown, Michigan, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, NYU, Cornell, Penn, possibly Duke. These are all highly selective schools.

ILoveLA, our dc need to get over their fear of the cold and go huddle together at Carleton!

IloveLA:

For strong math/science, check out the Integrated Science Program at Northwestern … although it’s obviously in the freezer zone, it’s still on my S’s ā€œsolidā€ list according to a conversation he had recently with his aunt. Not sure about the Latin part.

idad, thanks. I won’t take Case Western off the list (of schools I want my daughter to look at but she probably won’t) quite yet.

FAP, I’m not sending her off to college to huddle with boys! (just kidding)

FAP, that’s a great suggestion. I will pass it on to her, and here’s a link to it, for anyone else who is interested.

ILoveLA:

At the Northwestern U presentation we went to, they talked about the lake BEACHS … :D

FAP, I noticed this on the Northwestern website. Your son probably has it covered, but just in case:

My S finally got his list from his college counselor. I am happy to see that many of the listed schools are also on the list we made (mostly I made, since S seems to know only two schools).
Counselor suggested for S to read about the colleges and grade them from 1-10. Any school with a grade of less than five should be eliminated. I can’t wait to see what criteria he will use for elimination, since the counselor gave him a list based on his ideal college.

Thanks ILoveLA. He’ll have it all done by June EXCEPT for the last subject test in Chemistry. He’ll need to do this sometime next year while he’s in AP Chemistry. This works since he won’t be doing ED for NU. His moon shot is SCEA for Stanford even though this morning, while dressing in his dark purple Link Crew t-shirt he mused that he looked good in purples. I said hmm, sound like NU for you. He said, ā€œCARDINAL (Stanford) looks even better.ā€

Ah yes, we also have some non-moon shots on the list as well. He’s (for him) anxiously awaiting SAT scores tomorrow.
