DougBetsy - D was supposed to have her senior portrait taken last week, and I rescheduled that too. Her appointment was for immediately after school - no time to get ready, sports conflicts, and then a really major conflict erupted at the last minute - it just wasn’t meant to be. They told me I could bring her into the studio in July - that’s so much better!

DB: Yeah, I think the timing for removal for the braces is going to come awfully close to senior picture time here, as well. S started it later than most, since his growth hormone deficiency also delayed dental progression a bit.

For me, I had them later yet and just had them off in time for my wedding!

LOL!

Another story about people not wanting to engage until closer to a date and they are more invested in the process.

H is on a short business trip to Montreal (school’s done for him.) So we’re sending emails back and forth about the summer trip, now that we know when S’s internship prof will be away. I figured we’d take a short trip into Canada after visiting the folks in WA.

H counters that we need to plane hop across the country, so S can see Northwestern U, Brown, Penn …

What just happened here? O-kaaaay! At least with the Chicago leg, we can stay with his sister in Oak Park. She’s within walking distance of an L stop, so we could train it all the way to NU.

FAP - sounds like you’re going to have a much busier short trip than you’d anticipated. I thought your S was pretty set on staying in California? Too funny!

LIMOMOF2:

We’ve been workin’ it with S, slowly but surely getting him intrigued with life outside of CA (it’s not like he hasn’t visited lots of other places!) Bit by bit, drop by drop … academic water torture! :D

LOL FAP!

Our school pictures are first day of school for everyone. Those are the pictures that appear in the yearbook. Since we have such a small school, each senior gets a senior page that they can design themselves, most are photo collages, some text, etc, pretty much whatever they want. I think these are due around Thanksgiving, one more large job to fit into the fall schedule!

D will have braces on for senior portrait regardless of when it is taken. We hope they will be off before she goes to college. She has always been “dentally retraded”.

laugh a minute on the 2010 thread this morning! My D2 just got her braces off a couple months ago, D1 at the end of 8th grade.

mathson wore his braces an extra two years because he kept breaking them. The orthodontist didn’t think his teeth looked perfect enough, but thought son was behaving badly and it wasn’t worth dragging out. As far as I could tell they looked perfect and still look fine however many years later it is now. S2 had the most snaggly teeth all through middle school which inexplicably straightened out on their own early in high school. I’m glad we waited to do anything about it.

DB: We got our first postcard for senior portraits the other day; not quite sure when we’re going to schedule those. I’ll have to talk to an experienced parent about that first
The price for the sitting went up depending on how many clothing changes there were. Eek. I remember just showing up in the auditorium and being handed a cap and gown. 10 minutes and I was out of there.

School is out! DD got the precal teacher to finally record the missing grade; the teacher thanked her for coming back to her (after 2 weeks) and telling her as opposed to complaining to the office. So her 2nd semester has all A’s. Yay!

After getting SAT scores on Thursday, DD has decided that she’s “one and done” for both ACT & SAT. ACTs were a 32 and SATs were a 2200 (770CR, 740W, 690M) and there are no Ivys on her list so she’s satisfied. She’s also nixed any SAT IIs so she’s done with testing until her Senior year APs. Phew!

The plan for the summer seems to be watching the entire 6 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The girls have gotten through season 4 from Christmas until now. The time between the Carnegie Hall trip and when she leaves for Vanderbilt are penciled in for Buffy time
It is so great to see them both relaxing; may that happen very soon for all of your dear kids.

Eek, braces… I’m so glad I never got them. We couldn’t afford it early on, and indeed, the topic never came up because the dentist always said my teeth were fine. They’re not perfectly straight but people have thought that I had braces already–the canines stick out a little but you can’t tell.

D was lucky - she only needed braces for just over a year. Middle school S got them about a year and a half ago, and will probably have them for another 6 months or so. Will be so glad to have those payments behind me.

RobD - D’s school band played at Carnegie Hall, and it was such an incredible experience, for the kids and their teachers. The sad thing is they don’t allow photographs or video.

Your girls are so lucky to be done with school/exams. My kids finish classes in mid-June, and then have exams until June 25th or 26th.

Congrats to your D on her scores. Yay for one and done. My D’s scores are similar, but she’s retaking in June anyway. Hopefully, she’ll be able to devote some time prep, but somehow, I doubt she will.

Keilexandra - yay for not needing braces!

FAP - LOL. I’m sure your S will find something redeemable in at least one or two schools outside of CA. ;)

Jackief - very cool that each senior gets to design his/her own page. Not sure I can see the boys doing very much - guess the girls (or their moms) help them.

vp - sorry about your D and her braces. Still, she’ll be glad when it’s all over and she has a beautiful smile.

mathmom - wish my kids had those self-correcting teeth! Almost $10,000 in braces for my two kids! Ugh.

RobD’s D, the first of the seniors in the 2010 thread!!

The senior pages are all pretty original, boys as well as girls. Kids receive yearbooks starting in 6th grade (I won’t say they’re free, they are included in the $tuition$) so I’ve seen quite a few.

Yay Rob’s D!!! Congratulations and I hope you enjoy the summer.

D selected her school ring today and that made me sad, although D1 got hers in junior year, so I think this lateness is a bit weird. What do I know?

I’m not a regular here - we homeschool so aren’t totally sharing the same experiences as you all (though we’ve done our share of SAT, subs, and APs) but I thought you would enjoy dh’s comment today. Dd was out when the mail came, and I told her she had some college mail - when she asked which ones, dh replied the University of Everywhere. It certainly seems that way at times. :)

I approve of that plan. We came to Buffy late - after my husband’s sister gave us Firefly on DVDs and we went looking for more shows by Josh Whedon.

Hi all,

DD and I are back from our Union/Skidmore trip. She liked both of these schools, but Conn remains the front runner (for now). In terms of academics, all three of these schools are similar, however, for her, Conn offers more intensive Asian language study. Aesthetically, it’s clear DD prefers the light colored stone buildings (Conn and Union) over red brick (Skidmore and Vassar). I am surprised how much she commented on this! It isn’t fair to compare the “feel” of these schools, as Union, following the trimester calendar, is still in session, while Skidmore has emptied out for the summer. The Union kids appeared lively and happy—they were clearly enjoying the beautiful weather, and my daughter said, " I could go to school here." Skidmore felt too deserted and she just wasn’t into the tour ( big note to self: no further college tours in the summer).

psychmom - if you do summer tours, your better off doing them at the end of August. Also, some schools do have summer sessions (Dartmouth, for example). We went last August (around the 20th), and there were plenty of people on all the campuses, even the ones where classes hadn’t started yet.

Mathmom, now I KNOW your kids and mine are related! S1 got hooked on Buffy this fall at school after the kids on the hall went through all the Firefly DVDs. NEVER would have imagined he’d like Buffy, but it’s Whedon… Dollhouse was renewed for next season. Much rejoicing in S’s dorm ensued!

S1 had braces for 4.5 years. They came off just before senior pics.

LIMOM, I had no idea how big an impact the kids vs. no kids on campus made on these tours…another lesson learned the hard way!
