Keil, I know it’s not on your list, but for general consumption, MIT has its own app. So did UMD.

I vote for a college with long dining tables. Larger tables equals more friends! By the end of the semesters our group would grow from just a small section of the table to the entire table to several long tables to the entire room, lol! Sort of like that shampoo commerical - they tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and they tell…

Big vacation trips - I’m jealous. I can’t get ours to sit down with us for a few minutes much less be in our company for several days. How horrible of me to even consider taking them away from their friends!!!

I hardly saw my S the entire weekend. He spent many hours of the daytime working on his linear algebra final (completed … ta dah!) and the evenings decompressing with his friends “just hanging out.” Our days were spent with baby shower, community orchestra, searching for a replacement car, etc.

I had a friend who almost “hit for the cycle” with three life cycle events in one day: a baby shower, a wedding and a memorial service. All she needed for the four bagger was to through in a graduation! I don’t know how she did this. My guess was coming late, leaving early and having events in close proximity to one another.

It’s that time of year, isn’t it? We haven’t had to go to any actual graduations, but are hitting the parties & open houses pretty heavily. Add in a cousin’s bar mitzvah and every weekend is full.

We did see a friend’s graduation online! Webcast from Rutgers–that was a good use of technology.

…And my postings are at the neat number of 1,111. Didn’t want to use a separate post to point that out, of course! :D

We are still in the thick of it here…my DD has finals tonight and wed night for her night class(in ASL), 2 major projects (which are not completed) due this week, a SAT II and being in a parade Saturday morning, and then finals the following week. She will also have to take some of the finals after school because she is a junior honor escort (Top 5%) and is required to go to graduation rehersal during the normal finals.
And she broke up with her boyfriend, which is sad, but now she no longer has a ride home from school.

S has been finished for a week. Whaaaa, I want to see the rankings!

That’s neat about the honor escort. Hope she had fun. S was one. During practice he was to tap them on the shoulder when it was their turn but one kid totally freaked because she didn’t like to be touched. Mmmm, ok. That was the end of any tapping on shoulders by all the escorts.

Yikes! I don’t think I will tell D about that one…but, yes she is very excited about it and looking forward to the whole process.

Not sure exactly about Chicago’s apps… they might have switched exclusively to CA since my vague memory of the much-heralded changeover.

Chicago now uses Common App and the Uncommon Supplement. Between that and Ted O’Neill leaving admissions, S1 has been very sad.

jackief sez:

sounds like a wonderful trip psychmom, how long will you be going for? And what a great culmination to the end of the decision phase, though I hope your D is set by then as I think she plans to go ED?

Jackief, The trip is basically one week, not much time at all, but better than nothing. It’s a 14 hour flight in economy class, which makes me again wonder if I am, indeed, psych-o-mom. She isn’t sure at this point about ED and personally, I am getting the sense that she needs more time, so we may very well be leaving the country just when decisions are coming in. Should be interesting.

geez guys, took me forever to find this thread this morning.

I think D is done with her pre-finals work. APUSH research paper and last physics lab handed in today. Finals are Thurs-Tues.

D2 has a 188 word latin vocab quiz tomorrow.

I told them that I need to get my money’s worth out of the last days of school as much as the ones in Sept, but I do think the work could have taken it down a notch at this point in the year. Jury is still out on whether the SAT IIs in June will be a better choice in hindsight. Hasn’t studied for USH yet, so maybe that one would be better to take close to the AP. We shall see…

Don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth. Had to kick son off the computer to go read a book. Only 2 finals and he’s prepared.

I keep thinking of things to ask about (your English paper? turned it in, Mom. Latin? working on a project for NEXT year’s state convention. History? no idea. Adv. topix in CS? Project’s done, Mom.)

I am disgusted by the whole thing. Chicago was never like other schools, but I guess that’s been slowly changing for the past 10 or so years.

S brought home the form to sign so the UC system can determine whether he meets the “Eligibility in the Local Context” criteria. If he does (I can’t see how not) it means he’s guaranteed a seat somewhere in the UC system … could even be UC Merced! Here’s how they descibe it:

Since graduation at our HS isn’t until June 19, the ramp up of activities has just started!

Events include:

Summer Fest (school wide, after school this friday)
Senior Ice Cream Social
Prom
Senior Night at Disneyland
Senior Breakfast BBQ
Community Scholarship Awards
Graduation
Grad Night Party

I’ve probably missed something here, since only S is class of 2010. I just know parents assisting at various events will be busy. Somewhere in this we manage to squeeze in the year end banquets for the spring sports teams.

Oh, and the list above of course doesn’t include all the private celebration parties, of which there will be many if last year is a guide.

FAP, is there any benefit to ELC if student would already be eligible in Statewide context?

Are you '10 parents helping at '09 events? I’ve got a shift at Project Graduation and one other event. I like the idea of junior parents helping out so senior parents can enjoy the festivities more and so we can learn the ropes for next year.

helping out at 09 events: To my horror, I somehow agreed to help chaperone the all-night grad party.

I help out enough with other school/educated events (considering I am employed full time) so I’ll leave grad stuff to others.

IloveLA: The only difference I know of between ELC and Eligible in the Statewide Context is that with ELC, the student knows of their eligibility sooner. Similar to ELC, they will have no idea (other than comparing their stats to prior years) whether it will be Berkeley or Merced. It’s possible the ELC students get on the radar screens earlier and perhaps get info sooner on things like Regents Scholarships and the like, but I’m not sure. Of the ELC students I know of this year from our HS, they are all going to private universities in the fall (Yale, USC, Northeastern, Johns Hopkins, etc.)
