Don’t feel bad, scualum. My 7th grader has two major projects due on Monday. One is a science fair project that he’s been working on with a partner (not finished yet - the presentation board still has to be put together). The other is a book that he has to write and illustrate for his history class. It’s a colonial American theme, but each kid was given a specific topic, and his is not an easy one.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am thankful for CC and this wonderful communty! :)

I don’t object to the homework over Thanksgiving- just to the short time frame for the assignment… I’d probably feel the same if it wasn’t a 4 day weekend.

I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving… ours was very nice - 14 people over and everyone went away full and happy!!!

I want to know why the traditional T Day is so carbo laden. I discovered this morning one of our guests has gout, as he walked painfully down the hall for coffee this morning.

We had 14 for our feast. It all came out well, despite the first batch of pumpkins rolls becoming rocks because the yeast refused to rise, and then a second trip back to the store since the sweet potatoes bought just last Saturday were a moldy, rotten mess. The little glass dish with the chopped rosemary hit the tile floor, but we had more rosemary and so we swept and moved on.

The teenagers had fun at their own table. Murmured just loud enough so we could hear, I heard them say, “Clearly, ours is the better table.” Not sure it that was a comment on our dinner conversation but it sounds like they also had a good time and didn’t feel off in the hinterlands.

Sounds like everyone here had a nice Thanksgiving - we did too. 22 people (maybe 21) at ours - but it was at my mom’s house, 5 minutes from us, so relatively easy for me. H and I each prepared a dish, and I did a little baking and a little buying of desserts - and everything turned out very well.

Not sure how much homework D got over the break - probably a lot, as she always has a lot - but right now she’s actually studying vocabulary for her SAT next Saturday, so I’m happy about that. She received her PSAT scores on Wed., and while she was very happy with her math score, she knows it wouldn’t hurt for her CR & W to get a little boost. She felt that she had a problem with the vocab, so that’s where she’s concentrating her study time. Bought the Direct Hit books I saw recommended somewhere on CC, and we’ll see if they help. She only has a week, so she obviously won’t have much time to devote to prepping, especially with all the school work she has to do.

FindAPlace - nice that you’re able to have a table for teenagers. Our kids range in age from 8-22, and they were all at one end of the table. D and her closest cousin had their heads together much of the time (they’re only 4 months apart, both h.s. juniors), but I couldn’t hear them. My other two nieces are 21 & 22, and the four girls spent a lot of time hanging out together, went for a walk, and then a ride. The boys unfortunately, are 8, 12, and 17 - so not much in common, though they all get along very well.

Wait, PSAT scores are out already?! (Class of 2010 junior lurking in the parents’ thread, heh.)

Some PSAT scores have been released by schools, but not all. Some have not even been received by the schools yet, and I don’t think any have been received by homeschooling families as of today.

We homeschool. No scores yet. Just hoping D did as well as last year when her score would have been high enough to make National Merit semifinalist, but of course as a sophomore it didn’t count.

A belated Happy Turkey Day to all! I’m still out of town, enjoying cool weather in the country, but we head back soon.

FindAPlace, that thought makes me sad!!! post no 1098

Our HS says PSAT scores will be returned before winter break. So, Dec. 19 or so?

I’ve been lurking around this site for a few years because I tutor kids in Test Prep & math. I have 2 sons in college now, and another one in the class of 2010 (homeschooled). I also have 2 daughters, grades 4 & 8. I saw the “class of 2010” thread and decided to join in.

We are anxiously awaiting the PSAT results for #3. Both older brothers were commended, though if the older one had the same cutoff as #2, he would’ve been a NMS finalist. Frustrating how the scale changes from year to year.

I look forward to taking part in the discussions here, both as a parent & a tutor. Lots of good info and encouragement.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Welcome, tutormom. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Wishing your S a lot of luck on his PSAT, and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Welcome, tutormom. Glad you came out of hiding! :)

Just back from a week in Disney World with 20 in-laws. (2 grandparents, 1 grand uncle, 1 grand aunt, 5 siblings, 4 spouses, 10 grandkids, and 1 friend of the family.) It turned out better than I hoped. Only one brother-sister spat that blew over quickly (H was the brother involved). >:-( And, Son spiked a fever after T’give dinner. Strep pos on Friday.
“All better” after 3 doses of amoxicillan.

No PSAT scores here yet. But, the volume of college mail definitely picked up while we were away.

I don’t think I could possibly back track in this thread to read everything I missed. I think I’ll just pick-up fresh here.

I’m glad you had fun at Disney, DougBetsy.

My D checked the box on her PSAT answer sheet to not get emails from colleges so her inbox has not been flooded. Except of course, lots of emails from ME, with links to colleges that I think she should check out. Alas, she usually ignores my emails too.

I asked D if she’s noticed an increase in emails from colleges, and she said she can’t tell because she always deletes them! And truthfully, they picked up a lot, even before the October PSAT.

I had to send something to her printer last night because my printer stopped working, and I sent it to her email. Well, imagine my surprise when I noticed all those SAT questions of the day in her mailbox! I asked her about why she doesn’t just do them as they come in, and her answer was, “well, at least I don’t delete them.”

vicariousparent - I have no doubt that if I emailed my D with links to colleges I think she should check out, that she would delet them without a second thought!

D’s home today, catching up on all her neglected schoolwork. She’s been busy socializing with all of her friends who returned home from college for the Thanksgiving break.

Those SAT Questions of the Day are only good for 10 days! :D

^^Youdon’tsay - won’t she be surprised?

BTW my D thinks I’m crazy to hang out on C.C so much, and she may well be right!
