Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

OMG ag54! It was balmy here today. That sure is exciting for you, I hope the schools don’t freak and shut down for the rest of the week :)

LIMOM- even though winter sports have started, we are just in the second week of the term, so there aren’t many big projects/tests due right now. That I think is the reason for the bit of time she has, just luck in timing not overall load, which is in general pretty high. She also had Thansgiving break to get caught up in anything so wasn’t behind the 8 ball as she was for part of the fall term with all the reading. And your D is recovering from the bug she had last week, that is a big catch up.

If D retakes, or if she decides to take SAT, we will figure in when prep would happen in the calendar before hand, for example a long weekend or even better a break. That’s why we thought these December dates were good after Thanksgiving.

PSAT score better than last year, but out of contention for NMSF. Probably a good thing, if she continues to like the ACT it means she may never take the SAT.

Snowing!!! In Houston? I wouldn’t think it would ever be the right conditions for that…

We have had snow exactly one time in the 12 years we have lived in this house (in California) - Christmas Day…

duplicate…

I intend to Scualum. I think it is not just my daughter but everyone who has this counselor. She is lazy and stupid (OK, maybe not stupid, just totally without any care when it comes to her job).

One of these days I will post here about the meeting she set up for us with the Special Ed committee (no I did not request it). The woman in charge kept looking at me and then at the paperwork with D’s grades and schedule saying “what are we doing here?”
You got me, lady. I just thought I should inform the GC that D has some anxiety issues when it comes to testing. Apparently, that means I am asking for her to be placed in special ed. Go figure.

D claims that the rest of the guidance dept. is very good. She just lucked out with this one.

Snow, Yea!! It is supposed to sleet here on Friday. I am not looking forward to it at all. I wish we would get some real snow.

Wow ag54 – snow in Houston! That will probably make the national news! I wish we would get more here. Winter is late in coming and the skiers are chomping at the bit. Poor S is still nursing his roken thumbs, so I think he’s ok that it has not snowed much. If we were getting dumped on he would be going crazy. :)

*broken…

Queen’s Mom - Are you kidding? Anxiety issues = special ed??? I think the GC is just flat terrible at her job!!!

Queen’s Mom – that is crazy. I don’t suppose there would be any chance you could change GCs? Maybe speak with the vice principal or whoever is next up the ladder. I would hate to think that this woman will be the one to be writing recommendations for your D.

That was my worry because the are passing out the darn psat’s today!! But, alas, no snow today!!

It was snowing pretty hard (relative to no snow ever ;)) last night, but it melted when it hit the ground. I did get a picture with my car covered with about 1/2 an inch!!

In College Station it stuck though, and my friend sent me a pic her daughter took of a white snow carpet on the ground :)

So, today at lunch the psat’s are handed out - dun, dun, dunnnnn!!

We got snow Tuesday night – after the record high of 81 that afternoon! Love Texas weather.

Good luck with those PSATs.

ag54, were you living in Houston about 4 years ago when it snowed on Christmas Eve? Our family deferred opening gifts so we could “play” in it. :)

Dallas got some snow Tuesday night but not nearly as much as Houston.

I’ve enjoyed reading some on this thread when I can get it to load - I think it sometimes doesn’t load because of its size :)

We homeschool and have always loved the flexibility but this (junior) year just hasn’t been fun at all. Highland Daughter spends every waking moment on school, test prep (many colleges require more SAT subjects of homeschoolers), dance and piano. Everything - including piano and dance - have taken the load up a notch or two this year. I miss the days when we sat in a rocking chair just reading good books…

I wish I was kidding.

I have still not written the GC that email. There is just so much I need to put in there and I am trying not to sound as angry as I feel. I will try to do it as soon as I get home tonight.

I was in Houston on that Christmas Eve! Really fun.

enjoy the snow all you Texans! I was hoping the sleety/wintry mix weather QM mentions might mean a day off, more time to ACT prep. No luck today, don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but not very probable.

Yes! That was such fun and seemed like a Christmas miracle  Our tradition is that we go out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant, then drive through all the decorated neighborhoods rating the decorations. That night was magical and I got alot of pics of the boys (we stop and take pics if the decorations are particularly beautiful or awful ;)) with snow swirling!!

It’s been raining here all day, and it’s supposed to continue through the night, changing over to snow at some point. I just hope it doesn’t stick - after Saturday would be fine, but D is taking the ACT at a different school, and it’s not that easy to find - hate to get lost in bad weather.

Good luck with those PSATs, ag54.

Queen’s Mom - I’m sorry you have to deal with this - as if this year wasn’t stressful enough! Good luck to you.

Highlandmom–My D is a dancer and piano player too, and was a homeschooler until this year. She decided to pick the most stressful year possible to choose to go to school. It’s tough losing the flexibility of homeschooling. Piano is really suffering–I’m wondering at what point I pull the plug on the private lessons. I’ll see how she does over Christmas break. I would love it if she could continue–I like hearing her play!

Wow, Queen’sMom, that is bizarre in the extreme. Is the woman a whackjob in general?

Hey guys, I have a question. I understand that when kids apply, the colleges generally unweight the GPA, which makes sense. How then do they distinguish between the kid who takes a regular class and a kid who’s taken all IB/AP classes? Do they then re-weight in some fashion and come up with a GPA all their own or does it not even matter?

Many of the schools that my 2008 DS applied to created their own GPA. Personally I wish more schools were like the University of California that has a very transparent approach to how they compute the GPA. Many of the other schools treat it as a top secret :(

As a side note, the UCs also don’t ask for transcripts up front - simply let you send them if you are accepted and choose to go there.

scualum - out of curiosity, how did you know that the schools your 2008 DS applied to created their own GPAs? I’ve been wondering about that - did they tell you that somewhere on the application? Also, how do the UCs make decisions without receiving transcripts?
