Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

jackief - thanks for posting the name/author - I’m going to add it to my list of stuff on Amazon.

D’s schedule seems so much easier to follow, though she takes more classes than many of your kids. For the most part, she has the same classes everyday. The only changes to her schedule are that she has physics lab and gym on alternate days. Oh, and every 6days or so, she has a band lesson (but I think she usually manages to schedule those for lunch time). I think block scheduling and hybrid scheduling are very confusing, though the kids seem to manage.

Wow… so many different schedules.
jackief – we are on trimesters also, the only HS in a huge district on tris. All the others are on semesters. It’s a pain.

LIMOM – did you say your D is taking the SAT this Saturday? My S also. He did all of ONE practice test, this last weekend. I think he has not been too motivated because he did well on the ACT. But he does realize that this test is important for the possibility of NM $. But I’m not holding my breath for that – his grades have been slipping a bit. I just hope he wakes up before it’s too late.
Good luck to all kids taking the SAT on Saturday!

BengalMom - yes, D is retaking the SAT this Saturday. She took it in Dec., and while her math and writing scores were quite high, her CR was lower than she had hoped for, so she immediately asked to take the January test. I hope it wasn’t a mistake! She’s done 2 practice CR tests, but nothing else. There was definite improvement, but not sure whether it will be enough - crossing my fingers!

Good luck to your S and the rest of the Saturday SAT-kids.

The HS taped the inaguration ceremony so interested students could watch during their lunch period.

At City Hall, we asked the maintenance guys to open City Council Chambers, so we could watch on the large wall screen with CATV feed. It was a great location to watch this historic event. This gave a great impression as to the masses of people assembled on the mall.

I sat in a chair next to the Chamber’s podium, having poginant thoughts of my own prior oath taking (as elected City Treasurer.) I was actually glad at the minor “oath glitch” since it showed us that these powerful officials are, indeed, human, and in need of the support of We, the People, as they help the country work out of our crises.

D keeps surprising me…yesterday she informed me that she is tired of cold and winters and is going to apply to schools in Florida. She is willing to consider some other southern states like Georgia.

Anyone know anything about any Florida schools? The University of Miami looks nice…Seems like a match for her scores and grades too. Never considered it before.

Any decent safeties down south?

QM - can you refresh our memories re Queen’s stats? In my mind’s eye I think I see her as a very high achiever.

Is she like a Duke match and Wake Forest safety? Or WFU match and Elon safety? Rice, Vanderbilt, and Tulane are other southern schools that come to mind. Oh, and William and Mary, too.

:)

Rice wouldn’t be anyone’s true safety, but it’s a wonderful school.

ACK! I didn’t mention many real safeties, did I? Lemme try again.

College of Charleston
Roanoke
Rhodes
Loyola of Maryland (although Baltimore may be too cold)
Virginia Tech

D is not a very high achiever. She is an extremely bright child who works hard (but no too hard;)). She has taken 3 APs through this year (1 last year and 2 this year) and is planning another 3 next year. All other classes are honors except for: 1) the required PE, tech, etc; and 2) theater classes for her academy certificate.

Her weighted GPA is currently 3.89, but other than one really bad sophomore semester it would be about 4.17. This is out of 4 but weighting can bring it as high as 5 (a 5 is really impossible to get because of required non-honors classes). Her school is a very good suburban public which does not rank, but is so full of over-achievers, I am not even sure she is in the top 25%.

Now her tests: Yuck! and she is retaking. She does very well on her math practices, but bombed the actual SAT (OK, that’s a CC bomb). I am hoping that she makes 1900, but she is below that now. She has severe test anxiety and an underlying neurological issue that might allow her extra time on the college board tests, but she refuses to even let me apply for a waiver.

Duke is not a safety (ha ha). Actually, with her substandard scores, it is more like a super-reach. Loyola is OUT-no Catholic schools and Baltimore is pretty far north. I did look into the College of Charleston. That seems like a low match for her (maybe I’m mistaken). Virginia Tech is a possibility given her current interests (which of course, change daily).

I know nothing about Rhodes or Roanoke. Can you tell me more? Tulane would be very nice, but it may be a bit reachy with her scores.

Queens Mom, if you are interested at all in publics - my oldest is a senior at UF in Gainesville and has absolutely LOVED his 4 years there. I can honestly say that even though it is a HUGE school, he has always been treated and felt like he was at a small private - he has been in the honors college and has gotten to know not only professors, but administrators, very well (like they go out for beers). Gainesville is a great college town and to be part of the Gator Nation is a joy.

Let me know if you want any information.

UF is probably a reach, especially as an out-of stater. Other schools to consider: U of South Carolina, Eckerd College, U of Tampa, U of South Fl, U of Central Fl, Flagler College, Berry College, Oglethorpe (though they har struggling financially). I would strongly recommend you look at Emory at Oxford. She can go there for 2 yrs and then transfer to Emory!

LOL. Queen and Son seem like academic twins. Just in case it’s helpful, here’s his long, prelim list (northern and southern included)

From highest reach to lowest safety:
Wm & Mary
UVa
Colgate
Bucknell
Wake Forest
Richmond
Lafayette
Franklin & Marshall
Dickinson
Gettysburg
Maryland
Elon
Saint Mary’s College of Maryland
Loyola College of Maryland
U Del
Salisbury U (Md)

Thanks. I am just looking for preliminaries. For all I know, next week, she’ll want something else.

Hi,DougBetsy, I saw that Virginia Tech is a safety for you. It seems to be getting harder all the time to get in. Son,instate, 1360(CR and M) ,rigorous courseload, all state in sport, Eagle Scout , with guidance counselor assuring me his recommendations were very good, etc. got deferred .Have to wait now until April to see if he gets in. Did not even bother to apply to UVa where his brother is because thought he had no chance because of a couple of C’s in the past. It is getting tougher all the time, even at public schools. Advice I would have to parents of juniors is to make sure the kids understand how even one or 2 C’s these days can hurt chances at many schools. My son finally got it as a senior and will probably get all A’s and B’s on his midyear report(with 3 AP classes) but it is too little , too late for UVa or William and Mary.

Does Emory require a separate admission from Oxford, or is it automatic with a certain GPA?

How about Tampa, Queen’s mom, or Rollins?

Tampa and Rollins both seem a little too safe given D’s stats, but I will look into them (since I know almost nothing about either one). Flagler College seemed somewhat interesting. Anyone know anything about it?

Queensmom,
Oxford is a separate college, with a separate application, about 45 minutes east of Emory [Oxford College - Home](http://oxford.emory.edu/). It is a small school, but the course credits transfer with the transfer to Emory as a junior.

and hey-- Lookie here!!

We agree, zoos!!!

Flagler is a beautiful school. The library and main bldg were originally a hotel for the rich snowbirds many years ago. The ceiling of the library is gorgeous. It may also fall into your “a little too safe” category, but it has a lot to offer, and being in St. Augustine, almost on the beach is hard to turn down.

Yes, I understand that. My question was after the initial two years, will it be a regular transfer application or an internal on with just an understood “if you get as certain GPA at Oxford, you are automatically in at Emory”?

Thanks for the Flagler info. Do you know if it has any outstanding departments that may be a little higher ranked than the rest of the school?
