There was a large internet outage in our area late last night/this morning; so many frustrated ACT-takers today! I texted D her scores after I got into work this morning.

MOSB: So glad to hear that your Mom is feeling better. Continued positive thoughts.

D visited the last two schools on her 6 school list Friday and Saturday. She said she could see herself at any of the 6, but particularly liked one of the schools she just visited. She realizes that a lot will depend on how much merit money is offered. She will have one EA application at her safety and the rest will be RD. She had to get an essay in to her GC last week for the NMSF application, and it’s one she can use on the Common App., so that is helpful. Still taking baby steps to in getting apps completed.

Congrats to those getting those apps in, and getting good news on latest ACT test results!

Congrats on the ACT scores. Ds composite was +4 from June and +2 from December. She bumped up to the next scholarship level at UA!!! She has also decided that she wants to apply to Auburn but their first EA deadline is Friday, don’t know how she is going to swing that.

Math has been consistently her lowest score and that is her weakness.

Congrats to all who got ACT scores that they were pleased with. Happy to report that D raised her composite to 32 (previously had a 29) (Whew!) Like many of your S’s & D’s, math continues to be her lowest score as well- but at least it went up from her April score.
D’s NASF app/essay must be submitted to GC today. D got good essay feedback from English teacher on Friday, and will tweak it today, before submitting.

Hoping that D will get 1st couple apps in this week. But it will be a challenge since it’s homecoming week. Her last one as a HS student
Why does it seem to be harder for me than for her?

MOSB- sending my wishes of comfort to your mom. My GF had shingles years ago and I know it was brutally painful for him to deal with. Wonderful that it appears that your mom is showing signs of recovery now.

Momofzach-love the Sr. page- I don’t know if that is something that is done at D’s school.

And phbmom, I really like the $20.11 check idea- & momofzach’s twist of $20 bill & 11 pennies. (maybe you could glue the pennies onto an index card in the shape of ’11)

OT- Go Pack Go (Monday night football!)

Yee-ha. ShawD’s composite was 31. She took it with 50% extra time but was a little ocnfused about how it was administered. We thought 50% extra time on each section but it was variable. So, she rushed a couple of sections and could probably do a bit better (maybe 33). She’s only applying to Canadian schools (her choice, not ours) and one requires ACTs but has a minimum of 26. I don’t know if it would make any difference with respect to admission (seems unlikely) but could help when they give out entrance scholarships. I don’t care that much about the scholarship as the total cost to us is so much lower than US colleges, but it seems to be the way her Canadian peers keep score.

I’m going to ask admissions counselors at her two preferred schools whether a higher ACT score will affect admissions or scholarships at the Canadian schools and if it does, whether they require writing or just the multiple choice. [She took writing because at the time she was also thinking about applying to US schools].

Hi everyone…this thread moves so fast! I am trying to catch up! Application question. So once my D submits either CommonAp or ApplyTexas, and she then requests scores go to respective schools, how long do you think it takes for the application to be complete? ie, how much time do we need to give the scores to match the app?

Hi everyone. I follow this thread whenever I can and thought I should stop looking over your shoulder.

I have a senior daughter who has not written her essay but otherwise has most of her paperwork done. She will take her second ACT next month, the same day we will be visiting a couple Canadian colleges. We are looking at scholarships (the non-local ones) and have learned that many are based on financial need and / or require a degree of super-involvement that D can not attest to. She should do well with local scholarships since the students in our school are traditionally lazy at applying and has a decent average, challenging course load and good test score (33 act). We have an overworked Guidance department at her school but fortunately, I have had time on my hands to totally obsess over this stuff for almost a year now.

I also have a high school Freshman and I am very hopeful that the second time around will be much easier. She, a classic over-achiever, is volunteer heavy and ED-overloaded, and I have found out that there are already scholarships that she can apply for, even as a 14 year old. So maybe I’ll be more on the ball with her.

Great group!

The thing about our local scholarships is that they tend to be in the $250-$500 range; $1000 is considered huge. It sure takes a lot of $500 scholarships to pay for college!

Congrats to everyone on the ACT results. My daughter had a very productive weekend completing the common ap, a rolling admission ap, and 3 essays. She had a problem with the common ap similar to what was reported in an earlier post. After spending 45 minutes typing in her EC data, she lost everything when she hit save on her MAC. A year ago she would have given up in disgust, but she redid it right away, this time saving each entry. Please remind your kids to hit save often!

We still have the heavy fog of two more rounds of tests to go. Every time I ask (not nagg) about studying, apps, etc., I get growled at by my son, AND his brothers, AND his father. It’s not easy being the only girl in the house.

I did the most mature thing I could think of…took the laptop, ipad, celphone, and a bag of chips to bed and locked the door. I took my toys and went home…

Congrats to all who did well on the ACT!

Blueiguana- what I found helped was to get S to do 5-10 problems in the areas he needed help in a night. Then I corrected and he reviewed those he got wrong. It was 15 minutes tops and he didn’t mind doing that. Some busy nights he would only do one or two, but most nights he did something. And I let him do the problems while he watched tv or listened to music, I just wanted him “touching” a few problems each night.

My 10yo D will be taking the ISEE in a few months for middle school. I found the same approach works for her, she can handle a few problems each night, its when I tell her I want more than that she balks. Of course, you have to do a full blown timed test at least once to know where the problems are.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who feels the need to escape!

mamom- I totally agree with your approach. I got raked over the coals when I kindly asked during the VT/BC game ‘have you got your schedule organized so you can get everything done after the game?’. I can understand some hostility if I told him to head up stairs during the 1st half to do a complete SAT dry run that takes 3+hrs. Nooooo, I just asked if he had arranged his schedule to get it all done.

Urrgghh!!

WOW…what a newsy morning.

Big congrats to sons and daughters of fogfog, Apollo6, Happy64, gamomof3, mommylaw and shawbridge on beating their prior best on the ACTs. Guess the extra studying helped.

Kudos to D of momjr and everyone else who worked on or finished some apps this weekend.

Great idea prizes go to phbmom and momofzach. Think a lot of us will be ‘borrowing’ your ideas. Shhh…

mamom - Our school doesn’t do the LOR section of the CA online, but from reading the FAQs, I believe an email is sent by the applicant from the CA site to the teacher with a link and instructions. I wish our school did it this way. It seems so much easier.

Missypie - no chocolate or ice cream?

mosb - hope your mom is on an upswing.

A big welcome to collegeshopping and laffter.

No ACT testing here. D is going with her SAT (single sitting) and hoping for the best.

Her list is complete, paper work turned in to GC and teachers for recommendations week before last, now she can focus on essays. Meanwhile, her boyfriend completed his list with same intended major, and 4 of his 7 choices are on my D’s list. He has same GC and plans to ask the same teacher for recommendation also. Their stats are nearly identical, so it’s an interesting situation, which I’m sure happens more often than I imagine. Not sure how I’m feeling about this, we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds in the next 6 months.

Me too-bad weekend all the way around-S, parents, etc.

D went up 3 pts on the ACT composite and that means no more ACT testing for her. It was better than what she thought she would get and gives her the advantages she wanted. Now onto SAT subject tests. That will determine if she applies to a few schools. However she is applying to most schools that don’t require the subject tests.

mosb - good to hear that your mom is doing better now. It’s hard to see them in pain.

Congratulations on all the good ACT scores! D is planning to take the ACT again in Oct.

Despite having had no big plans for the weekend on Fri night, we did end up with a very busy weekend and a great weekend! Today’s my birthday (didn’t know I shared a bday with Google!) and we celebrated on Sat. Wonderful weather - walked around Castle Island, had dinner and then went to see the Blue Man Group perform in Boston. Nice to have the family together spending a day outside! Couldn’t help thinking that next year, D is not going to be here
Spent the day Sunday watching football with friends! Yeah!

Well, D did get a “short” essay completed last night. She needed a personal statement (less than 500 words) for one of the apps - she tweaked her main essay with some help from me to cut it down. Not down to 500 words, but I think it will do. So, she should be on track to submit this app by Oct 1st (original goal!). Woohoo - a really good birthday present for mom!

Grad parties are typically casual out here. Lots of barbecues, pool parties. We typically host a memorial day bbq at our house with over a hundred or so people - we think that next year, we will combine this with her grad party. Most of the same people will be at both! Graduation is June 4th - by memorial day, she should be done with school anyway.

Pepper- hope this week is better.

Arisamp - Happy Birthday! You share a bday with my SIL. You must live near me, I know Castle island pretty well, son goes to school near there.

husky82, i can’t believe it. we’re in the same situation! my son and his girlfriend also are applying for the same major and have 8 overlapping schools, nearly identical grades and scores. one of their teacher rec will be coming from the same teacher (the one that pertains to their major) but they have different school college counselors. she’s applying to his first choice school but he isn’t applying to her first choice.

they’re not applying to these overlapping schools for the sake of being w/ each other. they’re both attracted to the schools for the same reasons: great dept in their intended major, wonderful resources, good location. although i must admit, he’s seen all of them and she’s seen only some, so i think in part, she’s following his hunches about the schools. we’ll see where all of this leads us. I swear, this whole thing is tricky enough w/out having to deal w/ this extra element.

loved all the party ideas. i’m leaning toward an open house. my best buddy whose daughter graduated high school last year decorated using the college colors but the invitation she created had her high school and college emblems/colors on it. she made a terrific collage of her daughter’s high school pics, including of course the senior prom, taped to the fridge and a slide show running on a TV set up in the LR. the tour-de-force: instead of a cake, cannoli for dessert decorated w/ the sprinkles in the colors of her high school on one end and the college colors on the other!

Congrats to all the happy ACTers!!!
