I read D’s almost completed Common App last night. I guess she’s the opposite of a “resume builder.” She listed exactly two ECs…the two things she has done all four years about which she is passionate. I made her add 5-6 more things.

Oh gosh Missypie–I know what you mean…
Kiddo has kept only THE ECs and activities that are important…
oh those resume “padders”… a mile long list of ECs and then an inch deep.
and AdCom have to know when a kid lists varsity sport, Mock Trial, x club, y club, z club and band etc etc…
there is no way a kid can be all-do all with significant contributions…

We have decided to assume the AdComs are smart enough to know the difference ;o)

Put a call in to the GC to let him know about kiddo’s new ACT score.
Updated online recruiting profile and let coach of recent official visit school know of new score…
Thankfully the 2 pts it took kiddo’s score from being in the cautiously optimistic (bottom end of mid 50% range) to matched at the middle and top of mid 50% range and in some cases to the top 25% for all schools that have stayed on “the list”.
Certainly worth retaking.

On the diet/new figure for spring goal…I am not doing nearly as well as I would like and have decided I had better take my goal seriously if I am going to get there! HA!
Hope everyone else is doing well.

I’m going through my bookmarks file of college-related items. Here’s a useful and timely CC thread of yore:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/623723-hard-drive-crash-essays-gone-perfect-timing.html

MomofZach
You did a nice job on that Sr page!!

Laffter Nice to meet you. Be sure to post in the thread for the hs 2014 kids. Several of us here are also there. Not nearly as active as this thread–should pick up in a yr or so…

I am so aggravated to find out that our school doesn’t participate electronically with the Common App. Everything from the guidance office must be done on paper. Apparently our school district thinks it is too expensive to have the software necessary to do it. Ugh!

Happy Birthday arisamp. Hope you had a lovely day.

Missypie & fogfog - my S’s ECs are very focused with no music, no drama, no sports, no SGA, no newspaper or yearbook. We presented and nudged him towards some of these opportunities over the years, but after age 8, we were unsuccessful. He is who he is.

ST - thanks for the backup reminder. You can’t backup too often.

Hi FLMathMom
I hope you didn’t think my “oh gosh” about resume padders (RPers)was pointed at anyone here—I was just lamenting the issue…we see so many “chance me” threads and these kids list stats and ECs that are …debatable…
We are ok, yes?
Hugs Fogfog

I do know a few of those who wuld be suspetced as RPers
…and am happy its not my kids…Cannot imagine the energy it takes ha ha

Congrats to all the improved-score ACT-ers! :)

I don’t know the deadline for our Senior Ad pages, but I expect something will come home from school soon. Our half-pagers typically are a collage of 3-6 photos with a brief message. I’m looking forward to putting it together.

Songbird doesn’t want a graduation party…asked instead for a reception following her senior recital (a solo recital we’re arranging and inviting about 75 guests to.) I’m still researching venues. She wants something “simple-yet-elegant” (she’s not a backyard BBQ girl, but doesn’t like too much fussiness either). I’m trying to strike a happy medium in a venue with an excellent piano, and without breaking the bank.

The weight-loss goes well. I’ve been too busy to eat and, happily, my appetite just isn’t what it was last year. Junior year was such a stress-fest.

My mom had a good day. Stomach much better and pain under control. The pain-patches are a godsend.

Happy birthday, Arisamp! :)

Hope you had a nice day.

Reasonably priced venue for recital: Look at houses of worship. In our area, many have very good acoustics and nice pianos…some have a nice social hall…and are often relatively inexpensive to rent. Also…if there’s an area college with a music dept — they might have a small concert or recital space available for rent.

Thanks, 2boysima! We’re already looking at churches and chapels…one is the chapel at our own church, but there may be a wedding already scheduled.

Your college music dept idea is an excellent thought! That hadn’t occurred to me, and we do have several colleges and CCs nearby. I’ll make some calls tomorrow; thanks for the great idea!

D2 has hit the submit button for two applications in the past week! More good news: her physical therapist has given her approval to run on a track tomorrow. About mid-May she pulled out of a race in extreme pain and was diagnosed with a stress fracture; it seems like it has been a long healing process.

Great news on both counts, phb. Hope she enjoys her run.

S2 had his first serious admissions interview tonight, to a top LAC in the northeast. One comment the alumni interviewer made was “Gee, I think you would be a candidate for Harvard.” At least he didn’t say “State U would be a good choice for you.”

MOSB - So glad your mom had a better day. Another thought for a recital/reception site may be a country club. I forget where you live, but with the last housing boom there were many, many gated golf course communities built. Some require you to be sponsored by a ‘member’ (someone who lives in the community), while others are public.

I have no idea what S2 will want. We had a small cook-out for his older brother because that’s what he asked for. It will be hard to navigate anything beyond family because a good number of our friends also have students graduating this year. Perhaps we could all just tailgate before the ceremony? ;)

fogfog - No misinterpretation. I was purely discussing my little angel. What really brought it to light was filling out the Coca-Coca scholarship app (due Fri I think). They have about 10 sections of types of ECs for applicant to indicate leadership positions in each grade. My son had one section filled out. As I said - no sports, debate, drama, newspaper, blah, blah, yada, yada. Also no chance to win this lottery! I guess we’ll switch to Pepsi!

FlMathMom - FWIW, we’ve been told that it’s a good thing to be a very well rounded student with a very focused EC. So get all those academic boxes checked off (sorry if kiddo doesn’t like foreign language), but the ECs are about them and if they truly have a very specific interest in something, then go with it!

phbmom-yahoo! 2 submits. hopefully that equals 2 admits. Hope your D’s stress fracture is finally healed and she can start running again.

As for EC’s, S is involved in quite a few, but it is pretty obvious which ones he has spent the majority of his time in. I think he listed them all

Ha ha^^

Yes
we have heard that admission reps like well rounded
and well loopsided (pointy?)students…
they want individuals!

When Paul wrote about being all things to all…so that…
it wasn’t about appying for college and admissions! LOL
and yet
we see so many kids try and do a bit of everything to show leadership etc.
Just look at the kids threads that ask what ECs they “should do”

sadly the message hasn’t gotten out that kids need to follow their interests, period.

Well–gotta run–I am substitute teaching for a half day at a local hs… ;o)

Is this right? I thought we had another month!
