Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Hi All

No expert here- however I gather that the deadline for Nov 1 is because those apps will then be downloaded by the schools…so far we are seeing downloads done the am after they were sent.

Anything snail mail will take some time to match (we do have experience in this part) so it seems reasonable that the LORs and GC recs etc if not attached through Naviance will be ok snail mail after Nov 1…and will take weeks to match them up…

Given that CA and Naviance reported much higher than expected web site traffic (that article was helpful) …If our student were filling out stuff tonight, I would also be inclined to send each app as completed today–and not necessarily wait for all to be done tonight…in case the servers have issues…so that you are not in a nail biting crunch this evening…

Also–one would think if the server/CA/Naviance experiences issues–that student apps caught in that cyber tunnel wont be penalized for the bottle neck…
I am obviously guessing…

In our house, the Sr is totally chill because the choice 1 app is being read–we got word that they started last week after the LORs got faxed (LORs were MIA in snail mail for close to two weeks) Two safeties were sent last week- one being a state flagship…so until the Sr gets an answer (soon) from chocie 1, the other apps, done and waiting in common app…won’t get “submitted”.

Grades for the Sr were stellar - some of the best …certainly the trend has been steeply upward since freshman year…as now in all APs and happily not in some other classes that were not favorite subjects…I think maturity and growing more comfortable in own skin has also been part of that equation
There is homework to be done, which I suspect will get started this afternoon…

On my side of the fence, I guess its time to finish up the sr dedication page choices of pics etc. Have initial choices and one pic our Sr liked less than others–so will change that…

Funny–kids who are freshman–and not friends of our freshman, nor the family ask about what our Sr is doing for college…as do some Srs who ask our freshman…The rumor mill and what our Sr will choose is up for speculation…

I am praying it all works for our Sr and the “first choice” otherwise it will be a long November…

As for Halloween candy in the house–our Sr asked for a specific candy bar (lots) to be purchased for home consumption ! Than goodness for Costco!

Very long haul here, not doing any ED or EA or rolling, so going to filing all zillion apps in December. Not expecting to hear from any (except one super safety he doesnt want to go to) until April 1… Going to be a very long few months. Common app is pretty much done but tons and tons of work left on supplement essays, short answers and dreaded “why this college” essays. A regatta this weekend, so not much getting done other than mom tearing hair out. At least all testing done and one interview out of the way. The interview was MIT and even though he has lots of other interviews to come, MIT is prob the only one of his favorite schools that really takes (or claims to) interviews into account.

^ From what MIT resp have said, the interview is really helpful.

Is your son being recruited there? There are some helpful threads here on CC about MIT and athletics…some parents with first hadn knowledge who you could pm

Aniger, if it’s any consolation, we’ve got one foot in your boat. While my S submitted 4 early apps (1 rolling, 2 EA and 1 ED) and will submit one more early by Nov 15, the rest of his apps (RD) need to be to his GC by Dec 10, deliberately before he hears back from the EA/ED schools. His school’s philosophy is that kids who have recently been deferred/rejected don’t write convincing “why x school” essays. So for the next 6 weekends, he’ll try to write 2 apps a weekend. I think it’s doable now that the CA is done. Most of the other supplements but for 2 are strictly “Why x” essays. In terms of the writing, I think my S finds those easiest b/c he knows why those schools are on his list, and they don’t need to be as creative as other essay prompts. It just involves some research.

So, like over at your house, apps will be a part of my S’s weekends for while to come. If he ends up getting into his ED school, we’ll light a bonfire w/ other apps to celebrate!

Oh no, son is not being recruited. Nowhere near that good athletically. Thinks MIT interview went very well though.

Same here. Boychild not applying ED anywhere and his one EA isn’t due until Nov 15th and it’s one of his safety schools. His other safety is rolling but he wanted to wait until he had his Oct. SAT scores as he needed 10 points to qualify for the highest merit award given. He beat it by 90 point. His essay is still being read by his GC, then there will be undoubtedly be revisions and he wants to show it to his English teacher, too. All his apps do have to be completed and into his GC by Dec.1st.

Happy Halloween all!

Count us in the Naviance/CA bottleneck, I guess. I am hoping the colleges have a little patience if the HS doesn’t exactly meet the EA Nov. 1 deadline. For my S, while GC paperwork and one teacher LOR submitted were uploaded by HS and then immediately downloaded by the college, still nothing from second teacher. S went to see that teacher Friday, and was told it was done and she would upload it that day. Just checked today, and still not done, with Monday deadline looming. However, he got an email from her telling him she has been unable to upload it, and she would check with GC on Monday. She says she was able to do it for two other students for the same school (I would sure love to know how she rated the other 2 compared to S!).

SDMomof3: you just stated my nightmare. I’m hoping that S’s second teacher will be able to upload her recommendation soon. Just checked CA and it’s still not there. My gosh, she sent in her letter for his rolling and one of the EA schools but told him she wanted to tailor the letters to his ED and the other EA which may be his second choice school. Now, it’s possible that no letter will arrive in time. My S also sent her an email on Fri afternoon as a quick reminder that it was due this weekend and that CA has been known to crash on due date day b/c of the number of uploads. Nerve-wracking, at best!

Well, my fingers will be crossed for you too RenaissanceMom! I really think the colleges don’t hold it against the students if the HS are slightly tardy for deadline, as long as the kid got all his stuff in on time. At least that is how I am sleeping at night!

Done and done!!! Ds waiting until the last blankety blank second, finally submits to 2 more EA schools and we are done for tonight. The essays today were…ugh…like giving birth - “community essay” stayed as the shadow asian community watching him and “why engineering” = awful but even revamped it to work for Wisconsin. If admissions is sick of reading trite essays, they should come up with better questions. Something that engages the writer. Still have one short essay for Cornell and 3 for Penn St honors…but right now I have trick or treaters!

Aniger - If I can suggest one thing it is to drop the safety he doesn’t want to go to. Sounds like your S is looking at math/science/eng schools. I have relatives who got into their safties with big merit and FA and then refused to go. Why bother applying if he isn’t interested? We didn’t apply to Sate Flagship because S had no interest. BUt, he does have other safeties on his list he would love to attend and we can afford to send him to.

My understanding is that the deadlines are really for the student and not for the schools or the teachers. I just sent the ACT and SAT scores last Sunday. I was afraid it would take forever to reach the schools, but within days we were getting emails that schools had received them. I believe they get sent in batch files to thecolleges once a week, but am not sure.

I was away all weekend…got home…dh had piled the mail up without looking at it. I went through the mail, one large envelope from a school saying congratulations and another letter from one of the schools she had applied to…D got her first two acceptances! (Hiram College and SUNY Potsdam) Yay! D and DH need to learn to go through the mail…that is usually my job!

Congrats holliesue!!

Son submitted two more apps via common application today due to comments on this thread. School has already sent their part and we ordered the SAT’s with the last test. Three more to go and then he’s done!

Meanwhile, son is getting phone calls from schools that he doesn’t really know anything about. It’s almost embarrassing. I’ll answer the phone, ask who it is and then cover the receiver and say to him, “Son! It’s xxx college. They are in Long Island. Tell them you are not going to Long Island!” I can’t imagine how it is for those of you that have super scoring kids or recruited athletes. Between the political phone calls and the college recruiting ones, I feel like we’re being phone spammed!

Congrats to your daughter, holliesue! Too funny that she’s not looking eagerly at the snail mail pile. I’m sure that most of us can remember back in the day being camped out next to the mailbox in the hopes that the fat envelopes would be arriving sooner rather than later.

ST-d is so passive about the process it is annoying!

Congrats, holliesue…!! (and your daughter!)

Yay hollie’s D!

Still trying to wring the big CA essay out of D around here … decided not to ruin her Halloween, since she’s not doing any 11/1 deadlines, but she won’t be doing anything fun until this is done …

Oh, she DID clean her room.

Hi All
Lots of sweet kids in costumes here–
I am determined to pass out all of this candy…
They are getting fists full!
Right now,
the Sr is making a huge dessert of cake, van ice cream and candy topping
and the Freshie is studying for history … after the drama we had here a couple of hours ago…SIGH!

Hope your evening is full of treats, not tricks!

I was greatly relieved…though both these schools were safeties, it was nice to know she has a school to go to! I like both of them alot too!

Thanks but love your safety isn’t happening here. He wants to go to a top Ivy, so lots of safeties are a must, but he can’t be made to want them! And I cant let him apply just to HYPSM and end up living in our garage!
