Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

momofsongbird and ohiomom-happy dance for you too!

yeah, just received S’s essay for the honors program at JMU. Nothing like waiting til the last minute.

Renaissance - yes, he put in his CA essay, I just think they put his file together without Oct SATs. My biggest concern here is the merit $…

holliesue, calreader, mosb and ohiomom -Yay to the submitted applications!

Ohiomom - we don’t have any rolling apps either and we’ll be in for a long wait as well. S’s EA decision will be out on 12/15, only month from now (but who is counting?).

Son didn’t submit any applications this weekend, but finished 4 out of 5 that are left. He just needs to review them again, but they turned out pretty well. He’ll submit at least 3 of them before next weekend. I see the light at the end of the tunnel!

The first appl out the door is a big step.

Talk about last minute…S2 has 2500 words worth of essays that must be mailed to a school today, and decided last night (after 9:00) that one essay just wasn’t cutting it. So he stayed up to re-write it, and I got up a bit early to proof read it.

But yesterday was a good day to write–low of 34, hi of 39, and rainy.

It really amazes me how much work these kids are getting done! I sometimes forget about the other stuff my D has to do - this weekend she arranged two vocal pieces (one for girls’ a capella, one for the entire choir), plus she has her classwork and homework, plus music practicing, plus rehearsals, plus performances. She manages to balance with fun time, and she’s fitting in the college stuff pretty well, considering.

I’m on the warpath today about our little ACT dilemma. I’m hoping they’ll accept a quick score order today if that’s what it takes. Otherwise I guess she just won’t be EA at that school. We can live with that.

Replies? I have decided that we’re never going to hear. It helps with the waiting …

To anyone who is as flaky as I am about ordering scores: DO IT AT LEAST A WEEK BEFORE THE DEADLINE!!!

It amazes me how dense I can be about instructions … ACT doesn’t send scores immediately (I was in fantasyland - I thought it just went through electronically with a push of a button!). So no scores would have ever made the EA deadline; even if this school had priority available (which it doesn’t) we still never would have made it, even with the old score.

Good news is that her new writing score is posted and we don’t have to wait to send out the 10/23 score (and I’m kicking myself for not checking last week - never thought it would be so quick). So 5 schools are done, gone, off my to-do list. I’ll get another few ordered ASAP - the ones I know for sure she’s going to finish the supplements for.

So I’ll just hope that this one school will be lenient, and if they aren’t, they aren’t. Thank you again for the advice on this thread about keeping priorities straight - she likes this school, but the EA was only because it would be nice to hear, not because her life is hanging on it. Presumably they will process it fairly quickly so we can make that audition appointment, but I’ll just check with the theatre department about that.

What will be, will be.

The nicest thing about this whole process was getting her very happy text a few minutes ago that she knew she had a great writing score. Little ego boosts are lifeblood for these kids right now. Talk about having your self-worth on the line every day!

Count us in on the “submitted CA” happy dance  S hit the button on 4 schools last night and was incredibly happy. It felt very official for him “Mom, don’t you want to come stand here while I push the button?” This college thing is actually for real now.
4 interviews also now scheduled.
This week - a break from colleges to finish the 4000 word IB extended essay due Friday - I’m with EmmyBet - amazed at what they get done, and glad I’m not in HS! My job is keeping the good food and hugs coming.
Hope everyone - including your mom, MOSB, has a great week.

Congratulations to everyone who sent out applications and supplements this weekend. It sounds like everyone is on a roll!

Thanks for the well-wishes MOSB, I’m staying in my PJs another day, which as we all know is the universal sign for ‘leave me alone’. It is so much different now with two additional drivers in the house. I must say for all the frustration teens can cause parents, my boys are very good to me.

Bluejr. had a great time at the competition with ‘his kids’ on Saturday. They will advance to the state level. Very exciting. His team also won the spirit award. They really are adorable and wear these cute little furry hats of their school mascot (tails included). They sing, chant, & cheer, and the parents have wonderful attitudes…this will make the world of difference for these students.

Progress was to be made on the CA yesterday. Filling in admin stuff…I’m not sure how far that got. Oh well, essays are all but done so that’s the hardest part, right?

Here’s hoping for a productive week for all! :)

This is very insightful.

My daughter’s NHS advisor told her she was doing a good job as president of NHS. My daughter (and I) really appreciated hearing that!

EmmyBet – here is my horror story about the score report. Son took his last SAT test in May and we used the free score report to send his scores to 4 schools. His EA school was one of these 4 and CB claims that they send the report on May 18. Son applied EA 3 weeks ahead of the 11/1 deadline. October 21, he got the University’s account to track his application status, SAT scores were not there, but I thought that they just need some time to match the scores to the application. Finally, today I decided to call the college – they don’t have his scores. Called CB, they will “research the issue and get back to me in 5-7 days” (!). I decided to bite the bullet and send the rush scores today. Fingers crossed, there won’t be any issues this time.

What makes me nervy is that it’s his only EA and he has no rolling admission applications. I would hate him to be deferred to RD, just because they don’t have all his information, when he finished all of his tasks well ahead of deadlines. (end of rant)

Congratulations to all the kids who had a productive weekend!

Keylimepie-what a nightmare!

I’ve been thinking about ordering the score reports either this week or the next. Given the past few horror stories, I think it is a good idea and will definitely order them today.

Question on ACT scores. D did better in all sections this time around, except for Math. Overall composite score jumped a couple of points. But if the school did superscore and used her old Math section score, her composite will creep up one more point. Is it worth it to send both ACT scores? Or should I just send the new score and be done?? I know for a fact that one of her schools recently said they do superscore - so D wants me to send both scores to that school.

Otherwise a quiet non-college-app weekend at home. Didn’t talk about college apps for the most part. Was a refreshing change. I won’t be home next weekend, so I doubt anything will actually get done then either. I am hoping she can hit the Submit button on the rest of the apps during thanksgiving.

arisamp - Definitely send both scores to the schools that superscore.

Keylimepie: How frustrating! I’m finding that it is best to call to check on things instead of patiently waiting for the school to update their files. The two schools I called both had the supposedly missing items and marked her application complete.

Arisamp: We had a similar dilema with ACT scores. I only sent the better composite to her safety school, but spent the extra $$ to send both sets to the other schools. I’m glad I did because we just found out that her first choice superscores the ACT. I would send both scores to schools that superscore, or where the boost will help her.

Oh, my, how these things do haunt us! So sorry to hear about the score issues. I pretty much figure we’re out of luck in our situation - and even if you do “priority” with ACT (not available for all schools … what the …???) it’s a difference of “a week” vs. “3-4 days”; not much comfort there.

Superscoring … no answers from me. I’d say one more point on the composite is one more point on the composite. So many schools superscore that I’d say if this one does, go for it. I know it’s hard imagining their reaction to seeing the (yikes!) lower scores on some sections, but maybe that new composite will make some kind of cut-off that you don’t realize. We were in this situation with the first 2 tests (and the second one had a 1 point LOWER composite to boot) - I am greatly relieved that the last sitting is the highest in all of the sections and took away that particular nail-biter for us.

I’m convinced: This week I’m ordering ALL of the rest of the ACT scores. Even if she doesn’t apply, it’s only $10 a shot, and I’ll be glad to know I did my part. Hopefully they’ll do their part … and the colleges will do their part …

Gotta have faith, I guess.

I just wish this EA school would at least e-mail or call me back about the score thing. What are people’s experiences? Are they ever lenient, or at least understanding? How often do they just throw your file in the corner because it didn’t have everything at a given time?

They’re entitled … I just wonder. So many “rules” in life end up being bendable, but you never know which ones, until AFTER you get the ulcer!

Yay, got the Profile filed for the EA school last night before today’s deadline. It’s amazing how many more schools require the Profile now, in addition to the FAFSA. When DD applied to colleges 3 years ago, only 3 of her 13 schools required it. Now, for DS, almost every one of his 14 require it. At $9 a pop, we’re definitely going to need financial aid!

No work on apps this past weekend from DS, though–too much homework. I’m getting antsy–he’s got 8 of 14 submitted, but the rest have supplemental essays to write. He’s applying to 5 merit scholarship competitions and still has all those essays to write, too. January can’t come quickly enough!

EmmyBet, please save me a seat on the Flaky Mom Bus. Can you believe I actually ordered (AND PAID FOR) the same (and only) set of ACT scores to be sent to 3 schools TWICE???

Apparently I sent them to her top 3 schools immediately after we got the scores last spring. We were thrilled with the scores and knew she would not be taking ACTs again.

I have absolutely no memory of having done that, and so I sent (and paid for) them again, with 3 others, last month. Only realized it when we looked at Order History, or some such option.

Wouldn’t you think the system would pop up a little note, “Are you aware you’ve already sent these scores to this institution?”

I mean…they can put a man on the moon for heaven’s sake…!

I did the opposite with Son. I thought I had sent AP scores to his school…I was sure of it. Couldn’t believe the poor registration order he was given for second semester registration, given all of his AP hours…that I had never actaully sent to the school.
