Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

OWM, Pepper, and Dignified – I didn’t even think about that part of it, but I bet you are right. For School #2, I had emailed the admissions counselor a couple of times to get our campus tour and interview set up, so she “knows me” – maybe I should email her again and offer to send the March scores too.

Hope everyone is having a lovely holiday week – despite uncompleted college apps, kidney stones, septic tanks, airport pat-downs, etc. etc. :D

cgpm, We were in the same boat with the October SAT - CR and M went down but writing went up. Too bad most colleges don’t care about the writing. I however, had been optimistic when he registered and asked for them to be sent to every single college he was applying to. I had a moment of panic and then realized that there was nothing that could be done and to just hope for the best.

LOL. I know what you mean. I’ve gotta say that the internet is your friend when it comes to physics problem sets. Someone else has run into the same problem and posts the question; someone else works out the answer. If you put in part of the text of the problem with quotes around it to get the exact match, you can often get enough info to put you on the right road to the solution. This should only be used if the kid has tried on their own first. I’m sure some students start with this, but at least we can model the right way to do this while our kids are still at home.

MOSB, ugh indeed! We had our main sewer lines replaced a few years back. The plumber saved us a chunk of the old CLAY sewer line, filled with tree root. Then we noticed that the johns were backing up. We put in call after call to the plumbers. First they told us that we needed a new toilet. Then they clearly thought we were imagining things…until they realized that they hadn’t connected part of the sewer line. We’d been dumping sewage underground into the front yard. It got fixed, though it did kill off a couple of plants. Still a better deal than having the mess inside.

Slithy- yes, my muscian, now IT husband found the whole problem set on line before I got involved. I didn’t look for the answers because as you said, I wanted S to learn that sometimes you have to work the problem several different ways to get the solution. That is just how math and science sometimes are. S is even so lazy that when I have purchased teacher editions in the past, he couldn’t be bothered to look stuff up there. (I purchase them if I can find them so H and I can help with schoolwork, not so he can look up answers, but the book is always out and available to him)

eek indeed about the sewage in the front yard.

CGPM - I wouldn’t worry about lower scores, almost all schools with take highest. But, I would send highest scores to those you haven’t, it may make the difference in how much if any merit money he receives.

I’m home from the hospital. They went in and remove the stone, and left a stent in its place. The stent is not a fun thing to have inside you! It’s really uncomfortable, although it’s a heckuvalot better than the kidney stone pain. I will have to take the stent out (myself) on Friday and I’m more than a bit nervous about that. Supposed to return to work Friday too, so I’m thinking I might wait until after work on Friday to remove the stent in case it involves a lot of pain.

Eww, sewer back ups and stomach bugs. Not a happy time for some of our cyberfriends! Let’s all hope we get back to normal soon.

As for acceptances and rejections: none here yet. She has submitted 4 apps. One is an ED app to Swarthmore with a decision date of Dec. 15. It’s a big reach. The other is Harvard - 'nuff said. The other is an EA app to Chapman University, and she should hear back from that in January. The 4th is a rolling app to a state school - and she should be hearing from them anytime now. If she gets rejected from Swarthmore, 7 more apps will be going out immediately. We’ve already ordered and sent SAT/ACT scores ahead, just to be on the safe side.

And senioritis? Not really. She has been so busy with extracurriculars and schoolwork that she hasn’t had time to slack off, except on things around the house (chores, cleaning her room, etc). She got an excellent grade report for 1st quarter grades, which she sent to Swarthmore (they require them for ED applicants). Second semester might be a different story if she has some acceptances under her belt, I don’t know. Her goal is to be Valedictorian, so she will have to avoid senioritis in order to get it.

O-Mom, glad the stone is gone. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Update: I did email the admissions counselor and she has already replied; she said they haven’t received the scores yet, but not to worry because they should get them over the next week or two. I’m thinking this school must get them through the mail and not electronically . . . so then I logged into College Board and dug around in there until I found the “Score History Sent” or something along those lines, and it shows all the schools that we had the March and Nov. scores sent to, and for the “new” schools added for the Nov. test, they got BOTH Nov. and March scores.

That’s what I was also unsure of, i.e. if you specify your four “freebies” for Test Date #1 and then for Test Date #2, you had two of the same schools and two different schools (or any combination), then the schools that were on Test Date #1 are also going to receive Test Date #2, 3, 4, or whatever. So, no need to order and pay for March scores because they are going to get them anyway.

I don’t feel like I explained that very well, but I suspect you all will figure out what I mean. I know there are some people who say to never use the freebie score reports before you take the test, so you can pick and choose which scores to send, but since we weren’t looking at any tip-top schools, I wasn’t that worried about it.

Oregon mom glad that you are feeling better!! You have been thru quite and ordeal.
Glad it is week of Thanksgiving. Kids are out for the entire week here. D1 home from college. We have spent the last couple of days shoveling snow and shoveling more snow. It has been crazy. Driving in this stuff should be outlawed.
Sorry for all others with septic tank issues and stomach flu. Hoping things get better sooner. D did not take the SAT again. She said she is tired and done. Hoping for good news with EA school Dec 15 but it is highly doubtful she will get in. I’m sure all of you will be the 1st to know. I guess we all need to learn how to deal with disappointment in life

MOSB, just listening to your ordeal felt exhausting! A little over 2 years ago our town suffered major flooding. I’ve lived in my house for 14 years and never experienced any water in my basement. We had well over a foot and our neighbors had up to 4 ft of water. Ours was less because the basement was graded for water to flow out the door. Unfortunately, since it was already a renovated basement, we needed to tear everything out and start again b/c of mold. I’ve never worked so hard in my life. Like you, I used a ton of bleach and scrubbed everything myself. It took over a week of 14 -15 hour days to finish. I know your pain.

OM, glad to hear that the stone has been removed. hopefully, you’ll begin feeling better very soon.

amandak, may this bug pass very soon!

Pepper, we have had similar days when scores did not match my son’s expectations and his demonstrated ability, and the whole family feels blue for him. But take heart: my S’s score for the Math 2 SAT II in October fell short of his expectations but he retook it in November and without any additional studying (he had already put in work for the first), the score he received today was 50 points higher and can now be sent. It’s entirely possible that your son will have a better day the next time, just as my son experienced. Even my son’s SAT I, which he took twice about 5 weeks apart, had individual scores which varied by as much as 60 points, such that both need to be sent for a super score. So much for SAT score consistency.

I’m trying to figure out whether I should send the new SAT II rush to his ED/EA schools today or just regular, and whether he should email the admissions counselors w/ his new score. Do you think it would be too intrusive to do so when they’re in the midst of reading app for early notification? Also, if I send the new score, should I only send that score and suppress the others so that it’s easily noticeable that it’s an entirely different SAT subject test? I’m afraid if I send all the scores again, whoever is scanning may not look at it closely and think that they just got a duplicate copy and not bother.

Oregonianmom - Glad you are back, hospitals are not terribly conducive to getting better  The DIY part of your post-op is because you have training? Geez, is this the state of healthcare?
Here, the ds is looking betterish and wanting to sip something, so that is good. He is already like a stick figure so losing weight isn’t an option. I’m waiting to give the “I told you so” lecture because now the “I have loads of time” honors app is due Tuesday and he has 1 essay still to write for that and a few short response things. Told me how he wasn’t going to wait until the last minute…didn’t quite put “potential illness” into his calculations. I’ll wait until he can stand.
Did you see the thread about boys getting their acts together in 10th grade? It was funny because I just kept thinking “they get their acts together??? really?” Funny stuff.

No kidding! It’s because the urologist’s office is closed this Friday and over the weekend, and they want the stent to come out on Friday. I called them and expressed my nervousness. The advice nurse said not to worry, but it can cause cramping an hour or so after I remove it, so I might want to take advil or something, and remove it after work on Friday. Yep, DIY!

OM–so glad you are doing better–and will be thinking of you in the coming days.

So sorry to hear about the stomach bugs going around! It is so contagious–take care of yourselves and stay hydrated. (((u)))

Getting ready for the holiday here…thankfully I was at Costco yesterday–the lanes on the hwy to to exit were backed up this morning!
Picked up odds and ends at grocery store which was busy enough.
Tonight is leftovers so we start with more fridge room. HA HA

I just want to be able to sleep in a bit tom am. I am sooo tired.

Does anyone have any cool traditions for the holidays or must haves on the table?

I am wondering about our kiddos’ friends coming back into town for the holidays and how much will we see our kids since they will want to eb with friends too

Mosb – what a nightmare! Leaking sewage the Thanksgiving week!

Omom – I am glad the kidney stone is gone. I hope you are feeling better and your DIY procedure is a success.

My family loves all the traditional Thanksgiving dishes sans turkey. I plan to roast turkey breast this year and see how it goes. Expecting lots of turkey leftovers. Last weekend I made my homemade cranberry sauce, thinking it can stay in the fridge until Thanksgiving and even made some extra, knowing that my DH and kids would like to have some before that. All (!) of it was gone the same day.

Thank you for reminding me! I need to get fake turkey for my vegetarian D before the stores run out!

OM, glad you are on your way to feeling better.

Sorry to everyone else who is feeling poorly this week and having other crisis. Always something during a hol week.

“No kidding! It’s because the urologist’s office is closed this Friday and over the weekend, and they want the stent to come out on Friday. I called them and expressed my nervousness. The advice nurse said not to worry, but it can cause cramping an hour or so after I remove it, so I might want to take advil or something, and remove it after work on Friday.”

Maybe you can go to a Doc in the Box and have someone there remove it.

Pretty traditional Thanksgiving here too. I promised myself that I would try a few new things so I am excited about trying those. Strawberry Pretzel Salad is always my favorite, easy and yummy with that sweet/salty thing going on…but that’s about it.

I am venturing out this year and doing a Cajun Fried Turkey. I’ve had them before but never fried it myself. I’ve been watching all the you tube videos on how not to burn up my house so I think I got it.

gamom…have never done a fried turkey, but have had them and being in TX it is something I should try. I was in Costco yesterday and two very stereotypical good ole Texas boys were loading up on the Peanut Oil and smack talking to each other on fine art of Turkey frying. Not sure what made it so darn funny…but I have not laughed that hard in while.

I’m trying a bunch of new recipes this year that I tore out of Oprah’s magazine a few years back. They’re supposed to be healthy versions of traditional fare. My husband is brining the turkey tomorrow night and he’s in charge of the turkey and stuffing, choosing his own recipes. I baked low-fat, whole wheat versions of 3 pumpkin pies, 2 pumpkin cranberry breads and a peppered corn bread today w/ my mom. It was fun working together. The “O” recipes I’m in charge of will be roasted string beans w/ olive oil and sea salt, roasted sweet potatoes w/ orange juice and molasses, and roasted brussels sprouts w/ onion and turkey bacon. If I’ve any energy left, I’ll make an apple blueberry crisp. Although I’m doing all of this in a healthy, low-fat version, don’t even ask about my diet for that day! Calories are calories, but I don’t plan on eating much of a breakfast or dinner later that night. I will roast chestnuts though, as I do most weekends throughout the winter.
