RenaissanceMom-sounds yummy! enjoy!

Chestnuts were not part of the Thanksgiving dinner that I was planning, but now I’m thinking….

They are pretty pricey this year, though.
At least in my part of the world.

keylimepie, that’s one of the benefits of living not far from the Italian section of the Bronx – lots of great small mom and pops that import from Italy at fair prices. I don’t make a lot of chestnuts but man, roasted, they are delicious and the aroma is not to be beat. Plus, they’re healthy, nutritious nuts that unlike other nuts, are low in fat.

Got a quick question for you – just looked at my son’s EA and ED schools. Three don’t require SAT IIs but encourage them and his ED requires two subject tests. They all got his first two subjects tests and today he got a good enough score to send a third. He’s applying as a science major and his first two scores were in US history and bio; this third is math 2. I’m thinking I’ll send the 3 EA schools the math score w/out the rush b/c they accept them electronically and the last time I sent them for the Nov 1 deadline they arrived the following day (one of the schools sent him a letter detailing that fact). Seems stupid to spend $29 to rush these scores. But should I spend it for his ED school, even though that school also accepts electronic scores?

He’ll probably email his admissions reps tomorrow to let them know that he’s got this to add to his app.

RM - Perhaps your son can scan the new Math 2 score report and attach it to the email and tell them he will follow up with official scores. My son has done that with his first quarter grades and all the schools said they did not need an official transcript, that the scan of his report card was sufficient.

Omom -Not to make things worse, but I’d be plenty annoyed at the doctor. I don’t know what is involved, but it doesn’t sound like something the patient should be expected to do. I vote for going to a walk-in clinic or your internist.

MOSB - You are an amazing woman. Congrats to your daughter.

You guys are killing me with your yummy food talk. Everything sounds great. We are eating with my parents at their Life Care Community so the company will be more important than the food by far. We’re blessed they are here to be with us. For that we are truly thankful every day.

RM - I dunno. Definitely e-mail the adcom. If the colleges require/encourage 2 SAT II scores, he should be fine anyway. I would rush the score report, if 1) his EA/ED schools are tech schools, and 2) his Math2 score is a lot better than his US history score.

FlMathMom - Happy Thanksgivings to you and your parents. My parents-in-law are coming to our house for the Thanksgiving dinner. They are 89 and 95 y/o. The 95 y/o FIL just got out of the hospital. I am going to make a feast, but I doubt that they will eat much, but as you said the company is way more important.

S got a “little” envelope today from his biggest safety. Before he opened it we just looked at each other like “what the heck?” Ends up it was not a rejection letter just a “thanks for your app” letter. Jeez Louise, it had us both nervous. Everyone else is using email for that now a days, what the heck is wrong with this school.

mamom, you have me laughing. Yesterday we got a “little” envelope from my S’s ED school addressed to my husband, an alum. My heart skipped a beat when I saw my son’s name in the first sentence. The Dean of Admissions wrote to say they they appreciate receiving my husband’s vote of confidence in the school but noted how difficult and competitive it is to get in and attached a stat sheet for confirmation. Oh my! But it was nice, and unexpected, that they bothered to acknowledge my husband’s faith in the school.

I remember when I was applying to college 25 years ago, my first choice college sent me a flimsy envelope - I was so discouraged and sad that it was surely a rejection letter, I threw it out without opening it (teenage drama!) - turns out that it was an acceptance letter, letting me know that the “big” envelope with all the necessary papers would be on its way soon…so I guess the moral is, don’t assume anything from the size and weight of small envelopes :)

My daughter is home for Thanksgiving break, and all she is thinking about is the time window of 12/10-12/15 when she will hear from her REA 1st choice school…I would give anything for a time machine right now to end this state of limbo…!

RenMom–I believe if you pay that $29 fee for SAT rush score, you get rush on as many scores as you are ordering. in other words, if you end up paying to rush it to your s’s ED school, it costs no more to then rush them to the others if all are ordered at the same time. Is this clear as mud? Sorry!

Tomorrow is a big shopping and baking day. I must admit, I wish I could just indulge but it is also a big push the button on some apps day. The UCs plus 2 others that are very high on S2’s list have Nov 30 and Dec 1 dates. There are big supplements to some of these and all those darn essays must be proofread one more time. Sigh!!! I just hate to put this all off to the weekend. What are you all doing about timing?

Madbean-S has 3 more apps, two due Jan 1, one due Dec 1. Plus there are some merit aid things to get in. H will be home with S today and he will have S get the Dec 1 one started. If S can get the Jan ones in this weekend, great, if not I am not sweating bullets over them. My 10yo D is applying to 5 private middle schools. Those applications are just as involved as college apps (both parent and kid sections) and I have neglected to do anything on them. They have to get done this weekend too. Maybe I will ask my Father to put a boot to my rear to move thoe along!

Shopping is all done unless I remember something last minute. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving day around 4pm when I am done cooking and serving and can start relaxing. oh wait, I can then start making 16 more bows for the xmas wreaths S’s boy scout troop is selling Friday. Can’t really put that task off much longer. then I can relax. ;-)

Son just left for school and I have a full day ahead of me with cleaning and a little baking and the grocery shopping. We’re having a house full for Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to the crowd but hate the prep especially the clean up. Normally, I would expect my daughter to help but she’s home from grad school and has two very long papers to write. My college grad son is good for toting and other manual labor but that’s about it.

My HS senior has just one application left to submit and he’s claiming that there is no way he can get it done over the break since there are multiple short and longer essays and he has a project due for his College class and it has to be submitted by Monday at 5 pm. The college app needs to be turned in by December 1 if he wants guidance to send in transcripts by January 1. arrrgh.

madbean, mamon and kathiep, sounds like we’re facing similar weekends. I’ve got a little more cleaning, straightening up to do. My shopping is done but for a few things a forgot to buy, like more eggs. Most of my cooking will be done tomorrow, but like all of you it will be long day for me. And I hope that I’ll have some energy tonight and tomorrow night to proof essays too. My S has the remainder of his apps drafts due to his counselor on Dec 1, although I’m not sure if he’ll succeed w/ that. The final versions are due to her by Dec 10. In addition he has an 8 - 10 page history paper assigned and a few exams to study for. So much for a relaxing, restorative weekend. I can’t wait until Christmas when all this application stuff is behind us, even if the news on Dec 15 isn’t what he wants to hear at least all the other apps will be long gone and we’ll have a real break, the first in a while.
Madbean, if you’re right about the $29 fee being charged just once for all 4 apps, than I’d cough it up. Hope you’re right! Can anyone confirm?

I just checked my receipt madbean is correct that all scores are rushed. I sent S’s scores for $10 per college and then an additional one time $29 fee to rush.

Well, if ds is still in pain this am, I get to go to the ER instead of baking, cooking, prepping. Went to the dr yesterday late and she was saying “either it’s viral or an appendicitis” and to get a cat scan if the pain didn’t subside. Still waiting for him to get out of bed.

amanda - best wishes for your S! What a shame you’re dealing with this, too.

I feel lucky - my in-laws do Thanksgiving, and my husband cooks our contribution, so I get off easy (I tend to be the person they send out for last-minute items).

Taking our Japanese student for her first Thanksgiving will be very fun. Although foremost on her mind is basketball season, the thing she’s been especially excited about since she came here. Of course there’s a tournament Friday and Saturday!

D submitted 2 more apps last night - we’re inching forward day by day. College D got home last night to much rejoicing. We’ll see when the spats start …

I’ll join the club that thinks the waiting part will be easier than the applying part, but I’m sure I’ll eat my words in a couple of months. We’ll have a few distractions, anyway, and I’m guessing the auditions will help avert senioritis - she’s looking forward to them with great excitement! My kids’ experience in HS has managed to have something special going on at any given time to entertain and distract - concerts, plays, festivals, competitions. I’m guessing D will continue to chug along at least until the college decisions come out.

I’m so sorry to hear of the difficulty everyone here is having…house woes (putting it mildly), and lots and lots of illness. It can really dampen the holidays when you or a family member is so ill that you are debating going to the emergency room :(

I’m not fond of holidays as it is too much stress, but that’s a personal thing that goes way back…I mean waaayyy back.

With the subject tests back, and the common ap and supplement to the one school S is sending it to being done, we are going to do a mom-review and should be hitting the ‘send’ button to much fanfare. That will be the end of applications here. I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this, but people have celebrated in the past, Bluejr rocked the Math2…of course our idea of an awesome score could be another persons idea of failure, but the only thing that matters is he more than met his goal and the studying paid off. Having me jumping on his bed at 5am telling him the score was a bit jolting, but hey was getting up in 15min anyway :)

For anyone who is interested, I started a thread ‘Black Friday Sales for the College Student’ in the Parent Cafe. Hopefully others will share theirs so we can start getting our kids set up without breaking the bank.

Again, sending all those who are ill, have kids who are ill, and dealing with house woes big (((((hugs))))))

Amanda - hope your S feels better and it isn’t a big thing like “appendicitis”.

Emmy-My D has a bball tournament this Firday and Sat also. I love watching them play.

My H knows enough to vacate the house Thursday morning. he told the kids last night to stay out of my way between then and Thursday afternoon if they know whats good for them. I told him that coming home to a clean house today would be real nice. I learned long ago to set the bar high. ;-)

Congrats to BI’s S! Don’t ever hesitate to share your happiness with us!

I’d love to watch Japanese D play bball, except she’s probably just going to watch after pulling a groin muscle Monday. The other kids are nice, and fun, and she’s making a lot of friends. The tournament is also 45 minutes away, and we already had other plans (she’s likely to miss Friday, since we probably won’t be back from the in-laws in time), so sadly I think she’s going on her own. But she’ll have fun with the team, I know. I have promised her I will go to all home games, but I won’t promise to travel (especially if she’s sidelined).

H and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary on Saturday night with a lovely dinner out with the kids (which is why we won’t be going to the bball game). That’s a main reason we had college D come home this year. Usually she stays in Boston and spends the holiday with my folks. Our anniversary is the 30th, but we got married the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so it feels like the “real” day to celebrate.
