Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

amanda, I get it. When D added some reaches, I poked around their threads, too. Honestly, I figure a reach is a reach, and if D is OK with taking a chance, I’ll support her. She CAN get in, so it’s not a ridiculous idea. But the kids on CC who post their worries can be scary and intimidating - I’d suggest you not let that affect how you feel about your son’s specific relationship with the school.

If our kids apply to reaches and don’t get in, they’re no worse off. But in our case my D wants to take that chance, because the reward could be so great if she gets lucky.

Good luck to you!

S has three apps left and they are all reaches. He will apply whatever the SAT II scores show since I have no idea the level of importance a school assigns to them. Some of the schools will accept a January test but he is done. If he can write essays that show me he really wants to go to these schools and isn’t just applying so he can say he got in he can apply-if not they won’t go out. I figure with the results I have seen on the ED/EA threads he’s got as much a chance as any kid with no hook-I don’t know if that outlook helps amanda but that’s what’s going on here.

He had his first swim meet yesterday which I was not allowed to attend because he was afraid he would do terribly. He called me after and told me he swam two races and he came in 3rd in one and on the relay race the team came in first! He said the coaches were amazed and the girls thought he was a beast! He is as happy as a clam at high tide! Who knew? Guess he should have spent his time swimming rather than writing all these years!

Congratulations to everyone on here with the acceptances. It is especially nice to see kids who were deferred earlier in the week get acceptances later in the week.

College apps are almost done and now he is spending his time on all his various EC’s and trying to get his grades back up-the last few weeks have been pretty tough.

OWM beautiful story.

Pepper03, congrats to your son on his swim races! I’m a swim team mom who spent many hours breathing chlorine fumes. Meets are fun, especially relays. I love listening to the kids go wild cheering on their teammates.

For those of you with kids considering reaches, a good reason for them to apply is to see the FA packages they get if admitted. We were surprised at how varied my oldest son’s FA offers were.

Kathiep, what a sweet thing for your son to do. I’m sure it meant a lot, especially to the friend who lost her husband last year. Another really nice, talented boy in the 2011/15 class! Congrats to you on raising a fine son!

RenMom, loved the professor’s comment to your son! And how cool that he gets to do the lab again next summer! Congrats on U of M! Oh!!! Oh!!! Just caught up with your later post on UChicago. CONGRATS!!! Wonderful news for all 3 of them!

Owm, thank you for sharing that beautiful story. I had not seen that other thread, so this was my first knowledge of your older son’s journey. I’m very moved by the courage of your son and his (equally young) wife. They’re taking a different road than I’m sure you imagined, but wow, I’m so impressed with their choices and decisions. Love that you have that beautiful Christmas memory. (If I had a grandbaby 10 minutes away, those kids would never see their child! I’m so jealous!!!)

Amandak, YIPPEE!!! So excited for your son!

Madbean, loved your adcom idiots/geniuses post. You captured it perfectly!

Congrats, also, holliesue – great news!

Mommylaw, congrats to your D! Check the acceptances thread…I think you and I cross posted, so my copying of the at-the-time most recent list didn’t include your new addition, and I think mine hit the board a second or two after yours. You may have to go in and add your D’s acceptance to Illinois again. Sorry!

Another victory: songbird accepted yesterday at Illinois Wesleyan University with their highest academic scholarship plus a very generous music scholarship on top. :)

We had my parents over yesterday afternoon and evening to celebrate both of their December birthdays. We’ve done this every year since my D was little. Had drinks and appetizers by the fire, with the tree and all the Christmas decorations, and candles creating just the best ambience.

We sat together for several hours before dinner, just soaking up the warmth of the fire and each other’s company, and my parents were here when she opened the envelope from Illinois Wesleyan. They talked with her about her choices, plans, thoughts, dreams…asked her lots of great questions in a very loving, supportive way, and I got to just sit back and enjoy hearing her describe her thoughts and feelings to them about each of the schools she’s applied to.

The best birthday gift we gave them was a copy of the pre-audition CD we recorded last week for a music scholarship. They both got a little emotional when they heard it. Like me, they’ve watched (and listened to) this child work so hard over the years to develop her gift and they’ve nurtured and encouraged her at every step. I can’t count the recitals, concerts, shows, and programs they’ve been at, right by my side. And the hundreds of times my dad has driven her to lessons when I’ve been tied up in meetings or business travel.

For them to hear her audition CD, and for them and me to be able to share this amazing journey she’s been on since she first began classical vocal training…was very special. I’m a sap anyway (you guys know that by now), but sharing that moment with my parents got me reaching for the kleenex box.

We’re thrilled to be 3-for-3 at this point, with another 3 still out there. She’s going to have a difficult choice in April, because of the respective pulls each of these schools has, and the fact that none of them has absolutely everything she wants. But for now, she’s happy with where things sit, happy to be ON VACATION, planning a special sleepover for 4 of her best friends the week after Christmas…life is good!

MOSB- how wonderful that you were able to share this moment with your parents. Beautiful! Congrats to your songbird!

Yay, hurray! Love hearing the great news.

D got a big envelope today … from a school where she has to audition but is looking now for an academic acceptance … “I’m very pleased,” says the Dean … and invites her for an Honors College interview!

Darn! I mean, yay, but couldn’t they say she’s got a regular acceptance and make her feel good? Maybe they don’t tell you anything until everything is over (including the audition), but at this time of year, it would have really made her day to get some REAL news.

Ah, well.

D2 had her wisdom teeth out Thursday, and at 2 this morning, she woke up with the stomach flu. She feels as miserable as she’s felt in a long time. After weeks (months?) of waiting for a nomination to West Point, our Congressman called today to tell her he’s going to give her one. He asked her a few personal questions. It was nice that he made the call and took the time to carry on a conversation, just wish she had felt better.

On another note, one of my neighbors brought over a bag of the pretzel/Rolo/pecan candies earlier this week. I couldn’t help but think of the CC discussion about the recipe. They are delicious!

Hip-Hip-Hooray for the University of Chicago trifectta RM! What amazing news after this weeks EA speed bump!

PHB-Hugs for yor D and congrats on the WP letter. A note on the pretzel yummies…hershey’s now has kisses with caramels and they are easier to unwrap.

MOSB—Congrats

EmmyB–yeah for honors…but I know what you mean

Pepper, holliesue bella & MommyL—congrats to you four on your respective happiness!

I hope I didn’t forget anyone…my memory isn’t what it used to be.

RM - Congrats on Michigan and Chicago acceptances.

AmandaKayak - Kudos on good news from U of Michigan.

Bella and HollieSue - High fives to your daughters on their New Paltz admits. That was one of the schools I applied to many moons ago.

mommylaw - Wonderful to share your great University of Illinois, College of Business news.

MOSB - thrilled about songbird’s acceptance and scholarship to Illinois Wesleyan University. Wonderful to be able to share the evening with family.

phbmom - amazing news about your daughter’s nomination to West Point. She must be a very special girl.

pepper - glad to hear your son successfully added a new skill to his roster espec one that attracts the girls. I think I’ll tell my son.

Mail brought son a big envelope from WPI today. Very happy. I love the school, the program, the campus, the people and the chocolate chip cookies in the dining room baked FRESH daily.

Wow! way to go.

Congrats to your D!

cookies…ummmmm Congrats to your S!

phbmom- hope your D feels better and good luck with the WP nomination. What an honor.

Nice! Life is good!

Congrats! Wouldn’t you think they would be prepared for the onslaught at 5pm? Glad you finally got good news.

S just put in one app last week and has two more due Jan 1. All are reaches. None of them are his first choice. He says if he gets into one of them he will go because how can he turn dow such a good school? But, I think we need to look at fit a bit more, not just school reputation. He has heard from 3 schools so far, one is in the mail, and 5 should notify in Jan. Life is good!

Congrats to your D! Nice to have choices.

Congrats and Good luck with other two schools!

Sorry if I missed anyone else, been really busy around here.

Really glad to hear the acceptances are coming in fast and furious. Congrats to one and all.
@amandakayak: please don’t let the kids on these boards affect your son’s decision to apply to a reach school. The kids here are a subset of a subset and don’t necessarily reflect the norm. If he loves Cornell, then he should go for it with the understanding that it’s a reach. You have to be in it to win it.

Good news and not so good news here. Son got deferred at WPI (a reach) and accepted at Guilford. I was surprised that he wasn’t out and out rejected at WPI, so perhaps there’s a chance in the RD pool. He also passed his drivers test on Friday so a good weekend all around. We’re not really sure about how strong the CS program at Guilford is and unfortunately their admitted students day is the same day as a big robotics tournament that he can’t miss up here. Maybe he should contact the person in charge of the department and ask some questions?

I am so glad to log in and find good news all around!!!

Congrats to everyone on the acceptances. The mailperson sure has been the bearer of good news lately. Today D got a letter with an additional scholarship that had not been on our radar at all. Because of the HOPE, we get full tuition, some fees and books at state schools so this is on top of that!!!

Phbmom, sorry to hear about your poor D’s misery. What a double whammy! Hope she’s feeling better soon. Huge congrats on the West Point nomination! That is awesome!

EmmyBet, that sounds very promising (though what a pain waiting)!

Pepper, this swim team story keeps getting better! You’re definitely allowed to go to the next meet, right???

FlMathMom, excellent news about WPI. Congrats to you and your son!

emmybet…that sounds very promising indeed!

Congratulations! So many kids have so many options already.

DS got accepted to Hobart and William Smith Colleges early decision. He was given the Trustee Scholarship which is twenty thousand per year. Now he can relax and enjoy the rest of senior year!

That’s terrific! I know how much this kind of news helps these kids get through a long, hard year.

Thanks for the kind words, but really all we got was a nibble. We don’t know how the honors college would work with the BFA, and we definitely don’t know if she’ll get into the BFA at all. She does have an opportunity to interview, though, since she will be out there for her audition in February. We’ll call Monday to see what we can work out.

D took a night off and went to see Black Swan with her GF. She loved it. When she came home she was definitely refreshed - she needed some time away from anything having to do with school.
