so true. here’s to us!

Happy New Year to everyone. Congratulations to those who are finally finished with applications.

Mamom: My D1 is getting better slowly. She saw the doctor on Thursday, and the doctor seemed pretty sure that she has turned the corner and will be well enough to return to college by the 10th. She’s starting to have more energy, but still has a very painful sore throat. This hasn’t been the best way to spend a break, but we’re thankful that it didn’t hit during the semester.

Hi everyone, and Happy New Year!

D and I were away the past 5 days - she spent most of it on the laptop, doing her two 1/1 apps, schoolwork, music practicing, audition prep, etc. It was stressful, but she found the change of scene helpful. She got both apps done by the 30th as she’d planned. No mail from anywhere while we were gone, but we should hear from 3 schools this month. She has two final 1/15 apps to do, but their supplements are easier and more fun.

Also we got a chance to do some talking, which is always good. MOSB’s words rang in my head - and came out of my mouth: Take things one step at a time. The next couple of months are going to be hard, both with college and everything else in her life. Looking too far ahead just makes everyone freak out!

Today on the drive home we also talked about how wherever she goes on her list she will have a wonderful experience, a great education, a terrific next step. That is a good feeling. It was also nice to be able to tell people on our trip that she had an acceptance, at a school she’d be perfectly happy to go to (and in a city where many of these friends live so she could see them).

Best wishes to everyone - I am glad to have this nice group of people to talk to. I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s family and holiday stories.

Happy New Year all! I had a quiet New Year’s eve by myself and enjoyed it very much. I popped about 2 quarts of popcorn and ate it all while watching “The House of Elliot” DVD’s. The rest of the family dislikes it so it was quite nice to watch without hearing one negative comment. My daughter (home from her college in TN) went to NYC to spend a couple of days with friends. My son’s each went to overnight parties and my husband played in his band at a wedding. As expected, the boys are in bed sleeping but I’ll get them up in a minute. Husband and I are enjoying some football while I sort out our winter scarves, gloves and hats. I am determined to be able to pull out what I want without digging through the pile!

momjr, glad to hear that your daughter has turned the corner. Too bad it couldn’t happen faster.

ohiomom, My husband had a similar adventure with some time sensitive document a couple of years ago where he visited three post offices in three towns trying to find an open one. As I recall, he got there with moments to spare before it closed. Not fun!

My son has been getting some interesting follow-up invites from Colleges that he’s been accepted to. One college invited him to a basketball game, three invited him (us) to fin-aid seminars, one (OOS) invited him to not only a concert on campus but a catered dinner along with a financial aid talk at more local very nice hotel. One small college invited him to come up for an “academic day” which sounded sort of like a regular accepted students day. None of which son is interested in doing…

Happy New Year to all my friends at CC!

Major congrats to everyone who’s children have hit the last SUBMIT button over the holiday. Also congrats to any acceptances over the past week or so (I’ve been offline for over a week…strange feeling to be back online…but nice, too).

Yesterday at lunch my husband said to me that he was “glad I’d found that College Crush” forum that helped me figure out college admissions this year. LOL, I do think the dear meant all of you, so thank you from him. Here’s to a GREAT 2011 to everyone here and a great spring admissions season!

GKM: “College Crush” forum - I like it.

We saw “The King’s Speech” this afternoon. The movie was great. I think I first saw it recommended on this forum, so thanks to the parent who mentioned it. It’s the best movie I’ve seen in a while.

I hope every day in 2011 is as wonderful as today. We had an Open House for friends and family - TONS of food and lots of drinks, great conversations and many laughs. Most of those invited have been to other gatherings at our home so there were not too many uncomfortable newcomers who knew nobody. You could feel the happy energy in the room. Our son even made sufficient appearances to keep his grandparents and me happy. He cheerfully (?) answered the same questions over and over and over again. One of those good days that will be a highlight in my mental scrapbook. Tomorrow…taxes. UGH!

OMG I thought S would be done by now. I thought that the last college app was due 1/3, now I find out it is really 1/10. So of course it will be in on 1/10.

Last two in our house are due 1/15. I am hoping for 1/10 :-).

I missed she was the older D. Poor girl. Hopefully she is able to keep up with things back at school.

Kathie- New Years Alone?? Watching something you want?? Wow. I am not a tv watcher, but I did start to get into the Lost series and borrowed the 1 st season from the library during the summer. Watched 2 episodes before having to return. So I bought season 1 and 2 for myself for xmas. S is into the series so he may watch with me, but we have to fit it into 'his" busy social calendar and school work. I get up for work at 4am so his normal tv viewing time of 10pm doesn’t work for me. Maybe next school vacation.

GKM - agree love College Crush.

And last, S got a letter from one of his schools that has already accepted him and gave him a very nice merit scholarship that he didn’t get another competative scholarship he applied for. It’s OK, it was only 2K more a year and would have voided the first one he got. They have been very generous already considering his large GPA/SAT mismatch. He also got a nice handwritten card from the admissions director at a U that accepted him just before the holidays. It said he was impressed with his essays and said some specific stuff regarding the essays. Of course, merit wasn’t so great and school is really pretty far down on his list.

Happy 2011 to all of you!

It has been a while since I’ve posted on CC what with the holidays, work, making college visit travel plans and nagging D to finish her remaining app (due 1/15). That last app may not ever get done. It is a reach school that D has decided she most likely won’t attend even if she gets in, so she sees no point in trying. I would rather see her submit and leave that option open. I’ll let you know how it ends up.

D is on her first road trip w/out “adults.” I put that in quotes b/c she she and friend are both 18, but… well, you know what I mean. They drove to go snowboarding in Wis. Happy to report that they have safely arrived and will have a fun day tomorrow before heading back home tomorrow evening.

To all my fellow cheeseheads, displaced (like me) or in WI… GO PACKERS!!!

I’m very envious of those who are DONE with applications. My D has two left, due 1/15. She has two 300 word responses to do and first said they’d be done by 12/18, the day we left on a family trip. She then said she’d do them on the plane. Well, it’s Jan 1 and we’re back–she hasn’t touched them. Can we PLEASE not have her working on them Jan 14?? Fortunately, D was accepted EA to Elon and it’s one of her top choices so much of the stress has been relieved as we now have the long wait until the end of March for the rest of the responses.

Wishing everyone a very happy new year that is filled with happiness, and, in particular, to our seniors and that good news awaits all.

Welcome back Collage1, Emmybet, and Mommylaw. I hope the last applications get finished soon.

I’m going to the Raven’s game this afternoon. May all of our teams win today (except the Steelers).

Hello, and Happy New Year! I have a 9th grade S who is a B+ - A student. He certainly has the capabilities to do very well, but ebbs and flows in the motivation area. He currently is taking Honors classes, extremely talented on the saxophone, and plays school sports. Any advice as to how to get him motivated to start thinking about colleges? He keeps saying it is a long way away. Thanks! : )

Hi all,
Happy New Year to everyone! May it bring health and happiness to you and your families.

I was away from the forum for couple of days and still trying to catch up with all the news.

Amandak I loved the gingerbread house pictures. I am very impressed!

Congratulations to everyone whose children submitted their last application. May the New Year bring lots of the fat envelopes to our houses!

momjr: Hey! Go Steelers!!!

Welcome to CC Calgon - Your S seems to be doing just fine.

I would avoid any college push right now. It’s a long haul and the last thing you want is college-prep burn out, especially if his motivation ebbs and flows.

As long as he doing well academically and loves his ECs, he seems to be on the right path to a good college already. Good luck.

Calgon - those are great questions, and I hope you can find a lot of info and support on CC.

I would suggest that you join into one of the “B” student threads (which is defined very loosely, but tends to include any student who doesn’t have a stellar record, may be a late bloomer or have various mixed attributes). Also feel free to post your own thread with your specific questions on the Parents’ Forum; you’ll find a lot of helpful advice and also bring in people who are in a similar situation. We’re happy to help you, but we’re all parents of current seniors, by definition, on this thread.

Thanks, I will try to find some discussions in here that are applicable. I just get freaked out that he is (I hate this word - an “underachiever”). I know that in the end, he will do well, BUT if he screws up now - it effects the future. Heavy sigh!

Thank you Emmy - I will take your advice.
