Leftofpisa- thank you and good luck to your D as she heads onto this final stretch!

holliesue congratulations on the great acceptance record and for being on ‘the other side’. A big shout out to kathiep for your son’s robotics scholarship to Drexel!!!

Lots going on here, but bluejr is happily entrenched in the world of being a high school kid! He’s got to eek out a scholarship app, which I know he doesn’t want to do. This one is non-negotiable. Other than that, it’s exams digging into a couple of AP classes he loves, really learning from one he doesn’t (AP Lit anyone?), and hitting high gear in his EC for about two months. Long days, extended nights, even longer weekends. He loves it and learns so much. Once he gets over the hump of exams I think he’ll breath easier. I don’t see a drop in grades, he just won’t sweat a possible B in Lit.

Wow! Nice work everyone. Happy to hear all the good news. And, to share hugs and reassurances as well, which we needed.

So glad we are in the home stretch. These last 12 months have been much more difficult than anticipated. I feel for the kids/parents of the class behind us. I also feel for the counselors - must be a little like “Groundhog Day,” just as our class gets less needy, the next class gears up. Thank goodness for CC; really a life saver.

D is doing some interviews, visiting a school (hopefully interviewing on site for a big scholarship) after an unanticipated early acceptance (did RD round, but they put her in EA), and doing a few scholarship apps half heartedly, I must admit. Tank is running on fumes! Happy that she has a three day weekend. AP Lit is brutal here too.

Younger sibling (8th grade) takes the SAT next weekend as part of an enrichment program. Doesn’t really matter how he does, but I would have liked a break from the madness!

^ I know how you feel about the poor GCs. I have a freshman as well who is taking a course online this spring (I know, not our first choice…but a schedule glitch that we’re making the best of). I’ve had to email the GC a few times about it and I feel SO guilty for bothering her during all of the Sr. mayhem! She’s so great and has now had all three of our kids. We are really lucky to have had a relationship with her in a large hs.

I do feel bad for them though. They have to schedule next years classes for 9-11, help early shoppers plan for spring break college trips, and go right back to “I got waitlisted at my drrreeaamm school! Can you do something? Please!!” Not an easy job.

OK, so here’s my second favorite scholarship, just be forewarned, there is doofy music on the site so if you are at work, you might want to mute the sound!! Deadline’s tmrw so get a move on!
[Oh, the Places You’ll Go! College Scholarship | Dr. Seuss College Scholarship | Seussville](http://www.seussville.com/OTPScholarship/)

OK just read the details, it must be “received” by tmrw…bummer.

Congrats to kathiep’s S on the $$$ and holliesue’s D on an unbroken streak!

D1 is finishing up an app for a summer internship program that pays $3k. It is highly unlikely she’ll get it, but she promised me that she’d apply. Lots of essays. I was told she was almost done. This morning, she said that it’s due at Midnight tonight AND she still has two essays to go, with 4 (or was it 6?) done. Her excuse was that her first essays were “bad” so she had to rewrite them all.

I’ve started hunting for sales on winter gear for D1. Last spring I saw the de rigeur black North Face Denali fleece on sale for 30% off (or even more!), but figured I should wait until this year to actually make the purchase. It’s like being a hunter, stalking my prey carefully, waiting for the best opportunity. :)

amandakayak, lovin these scholarships you are finding. D1 can’t do the Seuss one since she’s got essay/apps and job going on next 24 hours but her younger sibling will benefit from these (if they are still around) in a few years.

SO blustery here, hopin to keep the power as it’s a home day and need to catch up on some online stuff (of course as well as errands laundry dishes etc etc, days off sure don’t seem like it sometimes-the to-do list is longer at home than at work!)

Congrats to holliesue and kathiep. Such great news. Son got his report card yesterday and the Mid-Year packages from the GC. Everything mailed off this morning. One more thing checked off the list. Done.

Congratulations to kathiep’s S on the $$$ and to holliesue’s D for the perfect record! Amazing!

OK…I’ve been avoiding all talk of financial aid forms (don’t believe we will qualify) - but now have decided that we’d at least fill out the forms. Took a quick look at the FAFSA - that looks straightforward enough. But most schools seem to want both the Profile and FAFSA. Aargh. And by Feb 1st!! So, what are most folks doing? Filling in information from 2009 tax returns? Or estimating 2010 returns? It looks like for the FAFSA, 2010 estimates are fine if you use the ‘Will File’ option - is there anything similar for the Profile?

We are usually in the “finish the tax forms by April 1st” camp - and I can’t imagine we’ll have everything ready by Feb 1st! Going to have to focus on this task this long weekend…

FlMathMom - good point about the mid year report cards. Ours won’t be available till the end of Jan - but must ask D to check and see if we need to provide envelopes for each school for this.

Got a letter from SUNY-ESF today…
they want my mid year grades.
My grades are probably the best I’ve ever had, but ugghh…
ESF is high on my list, and I really thought I’d get in…
So, so far I’ve got into Drexel.
Pitt wants my mid year grades.
I got a likely letter from RIT.
I should hear back from Juniata any day now.
I’ve heard nothing from Penn State, other than they have my app.
Decisions for SUNY Oswego are released around late Jan.
Won’t hear back from Rochester until March. It’s still my dream school but I won’t trick myself into thinking I’ll get in.

arisamp - I filed FAFSA & Profile using estimated 2010 #s which should be pretty close. My husband is self-employed. I do his books so I have those #s. Investment income is available online for most stuff. I used last year’s #s for those that were unavailable. Plugged everything into Turbotax and voila.

Re: mid-yr report - our GC does everything via postal mail. Son filled out a form with the number of reports he needed and he got them back in sealed envelopes. They can be done online thru the Common App. Depends on the high school. Each has its own process. We did scan his report card to send to one school who wanted grades ASAP. This way they don’t have to wait for the mail carrier.

Someone asked whether to send mid-year grades even if the school doesn’t ask for them. I did that with the schools my son was still considering. His class ranking had gone from the top 20.1% to the top 19.6%. Teeeeny increase. BUT, the school he eventually attended gave him $2000 more a year in merit money because he had moved into the top 20%. Moral: If the ranking is better, even slightly, it may just help.

arisamp thank you for asking this.
We are on an emotional rollercoaster due to a lot of things around her and haven’t even taxes, FAFSA etc and one of the schools wants done by 1/25. Definitely won’t have info we need so just do the best with 2009 #s? Will have to call the school at some point anyway to explain a situation but have heard best to call after you’ve done (the best you can) FAFSA.

sorry about all the typos there in my last post

Thank you for the input on sending grades. My D’s GC says they don’t do it unless the school specifically asks for it, but I’m going to push for it. She’s also in line for some merit money, and these grades are her best yet, so why not?

thanks again

FlMathMom - thanks for the response on the FAFSA/Profile. I’ll attempt to get them done this weekend with last year’s numbers at the very least.

D got her letter from her safety school - with a very nice merit award. And a separate 1-year research scholarship. Interesting twist - makes the whole amount seem more than it is - the first year will have more money than the rest though. Have to go home and read the letter to see…

arisamp- congrats on your D’s acceptance and merit award! It is nice when the safety comes through!!

Arisamp: Congrats to you and your daughter. It’s very nice when the safetly comes through with merit money. It should be a nice weekend in your house.
