Agree. And as this process seems to drag on and on, I agree even more.

Pepper- hope the bug stops with your S.

MM- wow, what an ordeal! Glad your D did well. Definitely sounds like you are ready for a quiet week.

Good luck to those doing auditions.
Mommylaw - congrats on the Marquette scholarship! I have fingers crossed that S will get something from them also. H & S are attending the scholarship competition this weekend, will you be there? Also have S filling out paperwork for honors and one other Marquette scholarship he is qualified for.

Amanda, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Take care of yourself.

Gosh weather forcast for the upcoming week is not good. I really don’t mind snow so long as I can get into and out of work. And the kids can get to school. Looks like we might have at least one and maybe two more snow days this week…

On another note, 10yo D’s birthday is Friday and I am taking her to NYC for a long weekend. We are staying near times square and will be going to see Wicked one night. She loves to shop and has been saving up for this trip. I do not want to travel 200 miles and end up in stores we have in our local mall. Any ideas from those familiar with NYC? A friend suggested Serpendipity 3 for food, and Tribeca, Chinatown, the Village and Daffy’s on 57th/Lex for shopping. Any other ideas? TIA.

Amanda, I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. What a terrible shock for you. I’ll be thinking about you and your family.

AK,
Sorry to hear about your mom.

It appears a lot has happened in the past week or so since I first posted. I am sorry if I missed the details but I would like to extend our sympathies to blue and to Amanda for their respective losses.

DS is now a second semester senior. The grades arrived on Saturday and confirmed what he already knew from the online postings. He kept his all A streak alive (just by about a point in AP calc he said) and is still ranked 1/247 but not guaranteed the top spot as his school performs a detailed review of the top 10 and they look at grades, tests, EC’s, leadership and more. Based on our conversarion with his GC in November, however, he has a good shot at it.

Like many of your S’s and D’s, he is about burned out on the scholarship apps and essays. He is done with apps, having submitted 10 in total. We have the first admit from Ohio State honors college and are expecting another from Miami (OH) in mid February. These are his safety schools and he is really looking for an acceptance at one of his other choices, all of which are RD at the end of March. The ironic thing is that he will be on his senior class trip to Washingon from the 29th through April 2nd when all the decisions are released. Looks like I will be evaluating mail and logging into app sites that I have access codes to.

I managed to meet my deadline and completed the tax return this afternoon. FAFSA is 90+ percent finished and should be all done tonight. Next is the CSS form. That one is worse than than FAFSA as they want a lot of data from last year as well. The crazy thing is I can’t file the taxes yet due to changes in forms related to my business. Hopefully it won’t affect the return or FAFSA. In any event it will be close if they change something.

Back to the scholarship list for this coming week. I have found that if I give S a list of 3 to 5 scholarships with 1 to 2 weeks of lead time I can get him to review and select the ones of interest and those that seem doable. I agree with comments from another poster that its fine to act as the facilitator and fill in the forms other than the statements and/or essays. Sometimes its the only way to push them along.

The good news from the weekend is we only got about 1 - 2 inches of snow and we got through S’s 18th birthday and two dinners. The prediction for this week is freezing rain and ice from Tuesday through Thursday. Just what we don’t need. My DW has had it with this winter and is ready to move south!

Enough for now. Back to FAFSA. :-(

S saw his Miami acceptance today as well. He is 5 for 5, so that is nice. Wondering what kind of merit (if any) he will receive.
I asked him what he was going to do with himself now that first semester is over, all apps are in including the one scholarship app.
I found that I had a two week reprieve on the FAFSA & Profile so that is nice. My mom’s memorial service was yesterday so I was glad it wasn’t crucial that I finish it this weekend. I did a little work on pulling all the stuff together yesterday.
Looks like another week of interesting weather. I had to shovel out a path to the back of the house for the propane man. Totally forgot about doing that. The oil guys left a note, but we forgot about the propane. We have never had over 3 feet of snow on the ground so this is new to us.

Amanda, I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom. It’s hard to imagine what that must be like for you right now, in the middle of all the planning and excitement for college. It must be very tough.

I’m so sorry Amanda. I know how much it hurts to lose a parent, especially so suddenly. Please take care of yourself.
