Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

kinderny: that will be the second-to-last day of my bachelorette experience. I will definitely toast to your daughter’s graduation.

I have to admit that the journalist in me really wants to know why this graduation warrants media attention.

By the way, by June 18, the Corps of Engineers predicts that parts of our town will be under water. All that snow that the states north of us received this winter is coing our way down the mighty Missouri.

Mamom - I’m impressed that he was able to remember all those college and perhaps even a little jealous. I don’t think I’ve mentioned that my DD’s counselor mispronounced our last name when he announced her at graduation. This happens to us with relative frequency but I was pretty angry on her behalf… plus, this particular pronunciation was one we had never heard before so we were all stunned and talking amongst ourselves for a moment - which was long enough for me to miss her actually receiving her diploma. Thank god there is a professional videotape available for purchase so I will eventually see it but still…

okay, sorry, rant over.

proudmom–this is the place to rant! that’s got to be really, really frustrating…

caught up the last couple pages here…I think?! CONGRATS to all the latest grads!

OWM–enlighten us about the bachelorette comment?

D1 and I went to Baccalaureate(sp?) last night which was short, sweet and inspiring.

Then H joined us tonight at the school for the awards ceremony --rather long but nice to see the variety of scholarships going to so many different kids. For a rather rural community, there is a generous amount of local $$ going to scholarships. D1 definitely got to walk back and forth to the stage a few times
Senior “picnic” day tomorrow where they bus in to a camping/picnic area with music, food, games etc. Praying for nice weather for that–AND also Friday evening for graduation! Rained the past few days here, today a little better so that trend hopefully will continue.

OWM - I hope the corps is just erring onthe cautious side and if they aren’t you are on the side which won’t be under water. I am wondering about the bachelorette comment myself.

proudmomof2 - that is horrible. Aren’t they suppose to verify that type of thing beforehand???

Flmathmom- nice work fixing your parents taxes!

I just marked June 18th on my calendar! It is the first weekend day in weeks I didn’t already have something penciled in, so I needed something to put in there. There will be a lot of us celebrating virtually with you Kinder. H and kids are now wondering “what are we celebrating at 5pm June 18th?”

collegemaw - congrats to your D on the scholarships!!

Congratulations to all of the families with kids graduating! My S has his prom tonight, then awards ceremony on Saturday and graduation on Sunday. It will be a busy weekend! S is naturally excited, and I must say seems to be taking everything in stride (so far). I, on the other hand, expect these milestones to be kind of emotional. My mom died when I was in 9th grade and never got to see me graduate and move on to college, so somehow this time is especially meaningful for me – to be here for the “big events” with my oldest! Now if only I can figure out what to wear to all of these things (don’t you hate it when you’ve got several events with the same group of people – it makes wearing the that same “favorite” dress impossible!).

I am with you on that. Men (sorry Avon) have it so easy with suits.

proudmomof2: I can relate to the name mispronunciation! Ours is mispronounced frequently. I did think that they could have gotten it right for graduation.

Bachelorette experience = Husband and DS2 leave at 0-dark-30 Saturday morning for a mission trip to New Mexico. Won’t be back until the evening of June 19. Don’t men call a house with no wife and kids “bach-ing it?” Same thing for me. I will be a temporary bachelorette. Chick flicks. Eat whatever I want whenever I want. Only my laundry to worry about (until they come home and then the laundry will be gross.) Going to the Princess Diana exhibit in Kansas City with some gal pals. 9 days, 8 nights.

As for the impending flood, we are 30 blocks from the river and on the high side so we are not in any danger at all. The river near us is at 22 feet now; flood stage is 17 feet. At 24 feet (predicted for Monday/Tuesday), some of our friends will have to evacuate their homes near the river and our local nature center/museum is in danger. It all could be worse or come earlier as we expect thunderstorms on and off for the next week.

My husband is a director of a city department so every day they have meetings on flood prep, in addition to the regular workload. And he has two employee vacancies right now so he’s already doing three people’s work. He feels a little guilty about being gone next week when the worst is expected. And he is being considered for a job outside the city (should know today or tomorrow). No stress in our household!

It’s a difficult time for the city that suffered great economic loss in 1993. While the Corps says the river won’t get to 32 feet as it did in 1993, it does expect the flood to last longer–perhaps a month. In 1993, it rose and went back down in three days. The city has since moved its water treatment plant so we are not in danger of being without water as the city was in 93. However, if the Air National Guard base on the west side of the river floods, I am 95% sure that the ANG/Air Force/Dept. of Defense will not rebuild it. It was 10 feet under water in 1993. Losing the base means losing one of the city’s largest employers and the economic ripple effect of having the base here. That would be a very horrible thing and a sad thing for us. My husband was the base engineer there for 12 years before his retirement. We actually moved here right after the flood of 93 when he was asked to be a part of the rebuilding team and then appointed base engineer.

(And for geography freaks, yes, a portion of Missouri is west of the Missouri River–that air base. The river changed course after a flood in the 1950s, leaving the base on the other side. On his way to work, my husband would cross the river into kansas, and then re-enter Missouri as he entered the base.)

As the kids say, probably TMI. So sorry. It appears our household has traded the craziness of graduation for the unknown of a flood and possible career change.

OWM- I am so sorry. That must be awful to wait and worry; even if you are not threatened your friends and neighbors are. I have been watching the news on this and it looks so sad for those affected.

For those of you wishing to be with us in solidarity- June 18, 2 pm EDT. At this point it is sheer bloodymindedness that is keeping us going. D got an email from the GC “reminding” her that instead of emailing some overdue work (for PE) that she should post it to the website. Except 1) she has not been able to post to the class website due to a technical glitch all semester which had never been resolved and 2) an email from the principal directed all seniors to send their overdue work for this class to the GC and himself as the PE teacher was off getting married. When D pointed this out, very nicely, there was no acknowledgement from the GC (not even an “oops, sorry”).

As far as I know D is pretty much on target or completed with all her classes, even her online PreCalc class for which we hired a tutor (optimal move and really glad D yelped for help at the beginning of May). So all told things are humming along.

(And, yes, D still isn’t graduated. And I still hate her school. )

OWM: Never a dull moment! I hope that the flood isn’t too bad, and that you get good news on the job front.

Momofzach: Congrats on your son’s graduation.

Avon: Where are you going in Europe? We went to Italy and Paris last summer, and had a wonderful trip,

Flmathmom: Nice work on your parents tax problem.

Proudmom: Sorry to hear about the mispronounced name. We get that a lot also, but forutuately not at graduation.

Collegemaw: Congrats on the scholarships.

A friend had a party last night for moms whose kids are away at senior week. No major mishaps reported so far.

Best of luck to those with proms, award ceremonies and graduations in the next few days.

Yes, that may be true but AvonMom is in the house and she has that same selection issue when it comes to her wardrobe and events! :)

Kinder - I have to say, I didn’t think there was a kid I could feel more relief for at graduation then my oldest, but your dd is awfully close!!! She is by far my sentimental favorite for 2011!!

I feel like graduation will never ever come. Kind of like the ship indecision, we have those stragglers on the boat waiting for graduation. You all have moved on it seemed and will soon start talking about sheets and minifridges - buy vs. rent. We will still be on the boat. Today all the kids have early dismissal because of “excessive heat warning” in the area (and no a/c in the schools).

Did anyone else see this story? It is too funny - story lists the link to his blog for more pics of what this dad has dressed in all year. [Teen’s dad spends school year waving at bus, embarrassing son | Deseret News](http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705373877/Teens-dad-spends-school-year-waving-at-bus-embarrassing-son.html)

think of it this way…we do all the work sorting out the best places to buy sheets, percale vs cotton, vs knit, minifridge with or without freezer, etc and you get to freeload on our decisions. :)

AK - I saw that story which bought a smile to my face. My S would originally be horrified, but end up thinking it cool. D would just find it more and more horrifying. I already sent it to her letting her know I am thinking of ways to emulate that Dad.

momofboston ~ Congrats on your D’s graduation and award recognition!

olderwisermom ~ So nice for your S2 to meet all these interesting people and make contacts. Sorry about the flood situation…
Enjoy your bachelorette freedom!

Best of luck to you on your knee replacement surgery!

MOSB ~ Thanks…

cooker ~ Happy for you some get together time could be arranged with your D.

momofzach ~ Congrats on your S’s graduation!

mamom ~ Impressive about the Dean!

proudmomof2 ~ Congrats on your S’s graduation!

So last night was Senior Awards night and DS got 7 awards, lol.
That includes math (3), physics (2), computer science and National Merit Finalist.
One of them had a check, which was nice. :)

Have a great day, everyone!

wow, aria! It would have been a nice night but the check made it a great night! No doubt your S is destined to go places.

Wow, Thanks for all the Warm welcomes! You all are quite an active group I wrote my post on Tuesday and had to catch up on 4 pages of good stuff! Lots of interesting talk going on and great stories hopefully I will start getting to “know” you all!
I usually check in everyday but we are in the process of moving back to the states, live in Europe and have been overseas now for 9 years. AvonHSDad, where are you all going? Am currently sitting among the boxes thinking what is in all of them! The mover said to me today, lady you’ve got a lot of stuff! Of course they showed up with only two movers to pack and then were complaining, probably need to have a big garage sale when I finally find a new house and get settled. Anyway my DD will be going to Yale, she is quite excited. How about everyone else, guess I will need to scroll back and find out!

My D will find out her roommates in June so that is great, currently she is in Ibiza on her senior trip, she has a great class (small 40 kids) and most went. They are pretty responsible as they had a meeting on their own initiative without parents to collect health insurance info, emergency contacts etc before they went which came in Handy as the girl organizing the trip fell and broke her leg the second night. Poor thing is currently on a plane home, of course she apparently was “three sheets to the wind”…shocking, ha ha. Drinking age over here is 16 which can be a bit hard to get used to, we serve alcohol at our school prom! Anyway hoping she comes back in one piece. (It was hard to let her go!)
Thanks again for the warm welcome, looking forward to getting to know you all more. Good luck to the OWM with the impending flood, I hope it misses you! I also need to go and find the story behind the mom whose line is about her daughter is graduating and that she hates her daughters school!

OhioMom, MOSB, aria2000, momjr – thanks for the pat on the back! Men don’t understand what we go through to keep things moving smoothly.

For all us with kids graduating June 18 – I checked the 10 day forecast – should be about 20 degrees cooler than it is today, thank God. They say it’s going to hit 100 today in NYC. I had to walk behind a bus this morning – the exhaust almost made me melt into the pavement.
