I am glad I am not the only mom who heard from S saying things like “where is my scissors, comb, etc”. Maybe that just the way they communicate to say hello?
Hope all the sick boys recovered to enjoy the holiday weekend.
Mathmomvt: What a great kiddo you have. Managed to go to urgent care, drug store and classes while feeling sick. I agree. It is heartbreaking for the parents but the experience is good for the students.
Like the Free Bird song and the band (Yea… Sweet Home Alabama) although it made me sad…
Mamom:Congrats to your S for getting the job on campus.
Tomorrow is the Football season opening game for S’s school. S has season tickets. This is the first year that we don’t have any weekly football game to go to. S2 quits football this year. Oh well.

I guess it’s everyone’s first game tonight. Younger D is a JV cheerleader and they cheer during 3rd quarter while the varsity squad takes a break. So that gives me an excuse to go to the game.

I have a genuine fear of having a crying melt down when the drill team takes the field and they announce the officers and D isn’t one of them. I didn’t cry when we dropped D off at school, haven’t cried since then and am very afraid that my tears will be public, tonight! Maybe later today I’ll watch You Tube footage of last year’s team in an attempt to cry all my tears in private.

We are planning to go to the field hockey game tomorrow. After the game, the parents have a tailgate party, which is organized by the coach, so we are planning on seeing D1.

Today’s text message: “Nail clippers, dishwashing soap”. Followed by “oh. my brown boots.” That was it.

I assumed those were items that she wanted us to bring tomorrow.

**The next new student move-ins are St. Olaf College, Bates College, Princeton University (Outdoor Action), and Brown University move-ins on September 3rd - Tomorrow!

Ahhh, Free Bird…funny story (well, depending on your POV. I thought it was funny).

Bluejr is a classic rock kid at heart, just like his momma. When Bluejr was in middle school I took him to see Lynard Skynard in an outdoor arena with his best friend & his mom (who is one of my best friends…yes, there is a pattern here most of his best friends mom’s are also my best friends.) Anyway, we are sitting at this concert feeling like the ultra-cool mom’s that we are, loving the concert with our kids when the guys behind us ‘light up’. The smell is unmistakable. We look at eachother and think…how could we not have considered this at a Lynard Skynard concert!! We then comment on how nice the breeze is going the opposite direction and how thankful we are it was an open air concert!

Best part of going to concerts - indoors or out! :D

Missypie - I will be crying there right along side you when they announce officers and my ds is not mentioned as the head drum major. Because of Irene, the HS band camp (with now my dd1 jr. and dd2 frosh) was held at home instead of the usual away camp…but what they did offer was for the parents to watch a mini performance on the last night around 10 pm at the HS. It was fun at first to look for dd1 and dd2 and where they were, it was fun to see the #2 drum major now accend to the head drum major spot. But it was missing my ds. It was crushing to hear the cadence as they entered the field for the first time this year and not see ds in the front. It was a good thing that it was dark.

Hugs to Missypie and Amanda. It will get easier.

I just had a great phone call from my daughter. She has really enjoyed her community service program, although she said it’s a little too much like summer camp. She’s made friends and really likes her roommate. Best of all, she’s really happy that my H and I are coming back on Sunday for the Parent’s Convocation. I was a bit worried that she would feel like we were smothering her. Drop off was so rushed that we’re looking forward to seeing her in her new setting.

I was a good free bird today and went to see “The Help” with some friends. I loved the book, and the movie was just as good.

Anybody’s DD’s doing sorority recruitment?

DD has been participating in the recruitment activities every night this week from 7 'til around midnight.

Today it starts at 4 and she doesn’t know if it’s all evening or when it might end. Tomorrow is starting at 2pm and Sunday is the big day where they find out if they’re in one of the sororities at a BBQ. She’s actually not positive whether or not she wants to join…but maybe she’s just telling herself that in case she doesn’t make it? I’ll be curious what she has to say come Sunday afternoon!

She is just sooo worn out! It’s made for some very long days! Hope she’s able to juggle this and the school work!

Boychild texted DH and is back on campus from the sailing trip. He said he’d tell us all about it later.

DS went to HS band camp all week to help teach marching (he’s a stellar marcher, if I may brag just a bit) and generally soak up a last little bit of high school before he leaves. Tonight is a home game, hosting the local powerhouse, and DH told me when I got home that DS had come all the way home from band camp (we’re about ten miles from school) to get his clarinet so he can sit in with the band for pep numbers for one last time.

Missypie and amanda, I expect I’ll add to the tearfulness when the band goes out for halftime and DS isn’t with them. This is getting real. He’s really, really leaving the nest!

I didn’t think it would hit me this hard, but just walking by my son’s bedroom makes me want to weep…must redirect my thoughts each time.

D came home today for a while to get a few things that she needed- she is 20 minutes away and I am trying to make it seem like it’s hours away. She came home to babysit for a few hours- guess she wants some extra $$- said classes were pretty good- a couple harder than the others. also mentioned that “rush” girls have to leave fraternity houses by midnight and said a few have already had alcohol poisoning -she is being very good and knows not to drink . It was so nice to visit with her as I haven’t called her at all. Her birthday (19) is next Friday and I asked if I could take some of her friends to lunch on Saturday and she thought it was a good idea… as for a present-she said clothes and money…she’s gone thru her allowance rather quickly the first week but it was mostly groceries and drinks for her room.

We made it up to Canada. At the border, the immigration/customs guy, hearing that ShawD was going to go to school in Canada, seeing her US passport and my Nexus card, and seeing the fully loaded van (containing more stuff than can possibly fit in half a dorm room), says, “Is she a freshman?” Yes. “Is she a dual citizen?” Yes. (I had brought her Canadian passport but he didn’t want to see it.)

Tomorrow we go in search of a Canadian cell phone (she needs to provide a printout or mailing to her at her dorm address, which we don’t currently have) and a full length mirror. Not sure what else is on the agenda, but there must be more. We had a great 7.5 hour drive listening to music from her ipod (she has very good taste in music) and talking. Plus lunch (lobster salad in the Berkshires) and dinner.

Well, D is experiencing Tropical Storm Lee in New Orleans. She is an Iowa girl that has never experienced a tropical storm or hurricane, so she is learning something this weekend. The freshman riverboat tour was cancelled last night. I feel bad for her, cuz I would have liked to go on that myself. I told her that if they don’t reschedule it, maybe she and some friends can go on a commercial one another time.

I don’t think Lee is expected to become a Hurricane and the Tulane community just needs to deal with lots of rain, which the area badly needs anyway. Maybe it is a good thing it’s a long weekend, she can just stay in and study for Tuesday/next week and have to worry about getting soaked before a first class of a long day.

@ emilybee - I hope your son had an amazing time sailing (kinda green w/ envy!). So glad Irene didn’t mess up his plans!! ;)

@ college4three - Try walking by child’s empty room and seeing the dog perched on the bed! That’s an instant tearjerker! I took a picture and sent it to Bluejr “look who’s been sleeping on your bed!”. Hope you feel better soon. We’re all here with you!

@ shawdad - Good luck with the rest of move in. I know you’ve put so much thought into everything. I’m sure it will go off without a hitch! Sounds like you and shawmom have some great plans post-launch as well. Can’t wait to hear about it all! :)

@ crusin - Good luck to your daughter as she finishes the recruitment process. Bluejr’s U has second semester rush, which personally I like a lot better. Depending on the school it can be quite intense. I have heard for girls it is worse through rush but they are treated lovely during pledging…boys just the opposite. Rush is a blast but pledging can be very, very hard. Obviously, a LOT of generalizations out there. The important thing is that your DD is happy. :)

@ bajamm - I hope your DD stays as dry as possible. Keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn’t upgrade to a full fledged hurricane.

BI, he did. Called last night. Everything was great. Besides sailing they also went sea kayaking. I didn’t even know people did that!

So he had a great time, kids are all great, roommate is great. Orientation start today and classes begin on Thursday. He sounded very happy on the phone, not the usual grunting I get when I ask a question.

Meanwhile, little dog bit me on my index finger and I woke up to it throbbing and swollen. Just back from spending two hours at urgent care. I’m told I will survive. ;)

EB - hope finger feels better soon

Any Tyler Perry fans out there? We LOVE him. We are going to see him in person tonight at Cobb theater in Atlanta. Can’t wait. Tix were very inexpensive for fans on his mailing list. We got ADA seats in Orchestra. Will also be visiting with friends and relatives and going to aquarium.

DS called an hour ago. After two days of school, he has lots of work to do. Glad I don’t know too many details. It will be VERY interesting to see which side of him prevails, Mr. Organized or Mr. Procrastination. He totally shut me down when I tried to offer advice. I guess he’ll figure it out himself. He is doing laundry,so that is a positive.

@ FlMathMom - We really, really love the aquarium in Atlanta! They have done such a great job there. Hope you enjoy it, as well as the show & visit with friends.
