Not to rub it in, but it is beautiful in South FL. Our normal humidity is hiding and there are none of those nasty storms aka hurri__nes on the horizon altho October is generally the worst month. If we get thru the next four weeks we should be OK.

Still catching up on mail, bills etc and dozens of hours of HGTV!! Thanks for the welcome home sentiments.

Hugs to AK and Pepper and anyone needing a pick me up today.

Kathypie- I feel your pain and understand. We have been dealing with the same thing here for the past week except SHE waited until she had another guy waiting in the wings, broke up with DS and the next day was tagged in a pic with the guy…smiling and hugging. So much pain for DS. While I think the breakup is not a bad thing and a natural conclusion to the relationship, I could have used pepper’s entire kitchen arsenal on this one! So much pain and too far away.

He says he is getting over it. We will see this weekend at Fall Break.

You all make me stronger knowing we are facing it together!

Sun is shining here for the 3rd straight day! How wonderful!

Lots of little encouraging signs from D - I think the magical 6-week mark might be hitting. Upcoming visits from D1 and me are also giving her an extra boost.

I, too, worry about a possible breakup, but there’s nothing any of us can do about that. It is hard to sit by as parents, though.

The days go by - we’re getting through this phase, people! And it still beats what it was like a year ago.

D says she wants to be involved in her dept as they audition the new applicants. She feels she can really sympathize and be supportive as they go through that. Good for her.

BC emailed that he will be racing this weekend on LI Sound - just a mere 2+ hours from here. I’d love to go but I got the impression he doesn’t want us to. He didn’t come out and say don’t come but eluded to it by saying we wouldn’t be able to see anything since the races take place pretty far off shore.

sunnydayfun: I’d be happy to bottle up some of our extra rain and send it to you!! We’ve had more than we can deal with and our yard is a swamp in spots. And the mosquitos – ugh!

D has had three papers due this week. Not a lot of sleep going on. That’s one thing about the quarter system…four papers means pretty much every other week.

New technology question. My dad and DH only use the PC for email and surfing and they aren’t great at either. They are scared of breaking it. Both are big readers. I heard that some of the ereaders can be used for email and simple surfing if you have wifi (dad and DH do). I know I could search and find the answers on the Internet myself, but you guys are a wealth of info.

Which is any of the ereaders should I consider? I don’t want a monthly 3G charge and I’d like to be able to either access ebooks from the public library or borrow fro friends. Size and ease of reading are important as dad is 87.

Your thoughts por favor. BTW, I LOVE MY ipad. It is my favorite purchase of the decade. If you are even considering buying one, do it. If you travel, buy it unless you already travel with a laptop.

Don’t wait to buy Xmas tix.Tickets I priced last week are now double. Back to the drawing board.

My dad is also in his 80s, has been all crazy about his kindle until he saw my ipad. I downloaded the kindle app, synched all his books onto it and he was so thrilled with how intuitive it was to use on the device, he went out and bought himself one. We both don’t have 3g, just wifi and that is fine because the way he uses it is just within the house anyway.

Kinder, I don’t really mind that he doesn’t want us there - don’t fancy being in the car another weekend. And if we went we wouldn’t have an excuse not to go to family break fast in CT. ;)

FlMathMom - I think the iPad would be great for them. The Kindle would be good for reading books/magazines - but if you want to add email, internet surfing - I think the iPad would be better. Way more intuitive for those.

Kathiep/MomofZach - sorry about the breakups. It’s hard to see the kids being hurt…even though you know they will bounce back…

So, D texts me fairly regularly - typically several times a day. This morning’s text “What’s my blood type?”. Came after last night’s text “Don’t freak out, they think I dislocated my knee!”. Few scary minutes later, she texts back “I need the blood type for bio class for gene typing”. Big sigh of relief. She has dislocated her knee - but it sounds like it is something that will heal itself with time and rehab. It’s swollen, sore and painful but she’s more worried about not being allowed to play this weekend!! Typical!

I agree with others that the kindle is amazing for reading books, but not so good for email, surfing, etc. I <3 my Kindle tho, and like the e-ink screen for long periods of reading with no eyestrain.

missypie, when we visited schools on the quarter system, that was a common refrain - -the workload is constant and you can’t afford to get behind at all. Sounds like your D is staying on top of it all

Reminder to remind our sons and daughters to get a flu shot, now that they are available.

arisamp – I have a friend whose son just dislocated his knee, and was only out of soccer for a week! So hopefully she can get back in the game quickly as well!

Thanks for the Kindle opinions. Someone told me you could email with them but that sounded too good to be true for the price. Maybe I’ll have dad try my ipad and see if he likes it. His hands shake so I’m not sure. Hmmm.

You CAN email with the Kindle, and browse the web, but the interface is not nice. For someone who isn’t even comfortable emailing on a computer, it’s not a good option at all.

I’ll add that the new Kindle Fire might be a very nice option for an email and web browsing tool in a lower price point than the iPad, but since it’s not out yet, we don’t really know. I’m hopeful though :)
