Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

mnmomof2: My cousin did a similar thing for my uncle on his 70th! He sent thank you notes to all who sent cards (with photos, memories, etc) telling us that it was the best gift that he received! What a wonderful idea!

As for the photo book, I did one for my parents for their 50th anniversary – mostly just photos taken during their anniversary party, but I did include their wedding picture and a few early pictures of our family. They loved it. I did a photo book for my oldest son for his high school graduation. Started with his baby picture, added photos of preschool friends, elementary school events, and carried on through high school – dances, his sports, awards, etc. His response was lukewarm and I asked him about it afterwards. He said, “I felt as if I had died and you made this book to remember my life.” Oops! Not the sentiment I was going for. I didn’t repeat the book for S2, but instead made a scrapbook of newspaper clippings from high school for him.

**20 days (or less) to Thanksgiving break **

Less than 3 weeks to go!!!

(Based on kids touching down at home on the Wednesday before TG. Some kids may get the full week and will land at home sooner.)

Grumble grumble…damn power company…grumble grumble. Day 6…saga continues.

nmmomof2, That is a great idea, my sister in law did it for her daughter when she graduated so I think its appropriate for anyone! Ohiomom, I have done the same thing for all three of my kids who have graduated, they loved it…its a ton of work but after the first kid got one they expected it! Luckily I only have one more left at home. I actually want to go and buy a copy for myself, I did it on Shutterfly but am waiting for when they have their 50% off sale as I went a bit overboard and each one costs about 170 dollars!

2 education, thanks for the coffee, I made some Butterscotch Oatmeal cookies I would love to pass around to all of you as I have already eaten 7 of them YIKES!

Painted half of my LR but not crazy about the color, husband said it looks fine and just finish it and live with it for a while! At least its better than baby poop!

D is on the upswing, sounded much happier last night which is a relief. I did get her term bill for second semester. Apparently the school needed a confirmation that older sibs were in college and my older D had not turned in the form to her financial Aide office so D3’s school sent me a nice e-mail saying “Just giving you a heads up that we haven’t received the sibling verification form so the bill is higher than you are expecting…didn’t want you to have a heart attack!” At least they have a sense of humor! They said they would adjust the bill when they got the form, am nagging older D as we speak.

Enjoy the Day!

Amanda - I am so sorry! I’d say at least you have power, but that leaves you as the boarding house…difficult after so many days, I understand. Crossing my fingers that today’s the day!!

EAO, So glad your DD is feeling a bit better. So hard as a parent when our kids are not happy. What’s the saying? A mother is only as happy as her least happy child. I get that! I love the note from the school, nice way to remind you…to remind your D3 about the forms. Good humor goes a long way in so many situations. Bluedad would be the same about the paint. We have several rooms where I tried to stop midway and he barreled on through before I could stop him. Once he finished when I was at the store to get a different color! I could have busted him…“but it’s done now” was what I heard coming through the door. Hope it grows on you.

Hi All

Saw this commentary and then another popped up today on the daily feed.
With the whole “occupy” thing, I keep wondering who is paying their bills, and do they realize all of the gear they live with from corps etc…

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/power-your-future/visible-tattoos-other-corporate-no-nos-193828198.html

Found an old paperback book that I picked up somewhere–“365 ways to prepare for Christmas” so while convelescing, I am making my lists.
Shopping if my most pressing issue–as I need ideas for DH and both kiddos…

Needed a good laugh, thanks Fogfog! I like the “colleges and hospitals don’t operate on rainbows and sunshine” part!! How very very true. And the body piercings…I went into a new store in the mall, Teavana, just to see what it was and the girl working retail was not just off-putting, but completely distracting, she had a piercing that went apparently across her cheek. I kept trying to figure out where the post would’ve been. And SHE actually secured employment, though I wish she hadn’t because I still get creeped out thinking about it. Does this mean I am old?

AK: Ugh! Day 6?? It’s good that your dad has you living nearby offering a safe, warm place to stay. There must be a lot of people who are trying to make a go of it at home without power or are staying in hotels. Are schools open?

^ Right. Think about the police, trash etc that is being paid for by the taxpayers…
and protesting about college bills and loans. Puuulllease.
She said it well.

What surprised me was the one about employment and piercings/tatts that was on the feed today…very close together.

Interestingly–those who also protest/complain etc…don’t want to say the pledge of allegiance tec…
forget that Many have fought and worked hard/died so that they have the priviledge of protesting/not saying the pledge. …

The NYT columnist was spot on…

also–I know that there are college grads and those with JDs etc…that could be employed in other states, other cities AND they don’t want to move (even to lower cost of living areas)
They want their dream job in a dream local…
When did they start thinking they’d “gave it all” (dream job/dream condo/dream local) straight out of school??Quiet the “microwave”/instant generation compared to those who had to slowly earn/acquire those things over years.

that was a good read - thanks fogfog

I do sympathize with people sincerely having a hard time finding jobs (or struggling financially due to health issues or other factors), but that article put into words a lot of what I am feeling.

I think the increased awareness of the folly of going into too much debt is wise. Hopefully, there will be fewer kids graduating with crushing debt as well as an improved job market in the not too distant future.

Some of that columnist’s scoldings to the occupy protesters would work equally well on the wall street folks. Like number 3, how nothing is free–except bailouts for banking firms that are too big to fail. Or number 4, about how your word is your bond–go watch “Margin Call”, based on the fall of Lehman Brothers, and see how seriously traders and hedge fund managers take the issue of being honest and above-board when push comes to shove. And numbers 1 and 2 about fairness, when read in conjunction with the latest reports on income inequality here in the US.

I’d like to see the same kind of parental scolding of the parents of, say, Angelo Mozillo.

There was news out of Occupy Oakland about a marine vet who was skull was fractured by police. About 100 military vets joined the OWS protests yesterday in support of their fellow vet, and to emphasize how they served their country and are now unable to find jobs. This isn’t just a movement of spoiled rich entitled college kids sporting tattoos and piercings.

And this is why we really shouldn’t have political posts on this thread.

Thanks for all the kind words!

As for the OWS crowd, I’m sure if I was a lot younger I would be out protesting. Some of my favorite times when I was in college was when we would go sit for days on the tracks going into Rocky Flats - a nuclear weapons plant outside of Boulder.

I’m a big believer in the right to engage in civil disobedience.

Fog Fog - Thanks for that article - I loved it! I am still shaking my head over a trust-fund kid that was interviewed on the news re: Occupy Wall Street - he was lamenting it was unfair that he should have so much money and others do not…Is he going to donate his trust fund and work like the rest of us?

Thanks for the article Fogfog. I duplicated it over in FA forum (gave you credit…haha) in a classic CC pi$$ing match about who should pay for college. Anyway…keeping it lite over here…lol.

Our operating systems are being upgraded at our office today…so bored.

AK - I think that the executive team at power companies should have to live without power until their customer’s are restored. Many in my area still have no power and their are no trucks to be found…

EmBee - I am sorry about all of your bad news…

heheh collegeshopping…
Do you think most people realize that the 99% goes up to $500,000 (a few grand over that–I am rounding down)

Really.

So yes ST the top 1% is making alot. and the whole bailout–there have been countless articles about that mess and the deal makers/breakers of the banking and financial instututions.

Momofboston–One would hope that if a trust fund baby is feeling guilty --that he live responsibly and give generously. His family earned it and if he is wise, he will live well and have plenty to share.

I am often schoked at how little the avg family does give to charitable causes. Many at far less than 5% of their income…yet want others to pay for things. You know where people’s priorities are when you see their checkbook.

Let us please move on from political issues. Many of us have very different and strong opinions, and they are by no means able to be settled in this forum. There are many more appropriate places to discuss them, including on CC itself.

Good news from D today - she is very excited about her parts in the Freshman play! We booked our flight/hotel for its performance weekend in December. I’m so happy D1 can come join us, too. It might be the only time all 4 of us can gather for a theatre production at D2’s school, for all we know, so we’re taking advantage of it this time.

I am sorry if the NYT article and link to the article about how piercings and tatts keeps people from getting jobs…offended some. It didn’t surprise me to read that is what happens in HR depts.

Beyond …

move in–long done
and adjustments–long done
care packages–some send, some don’t
and countdown to turkey day…

There is often little of substance discussed…

and if we are to keep it ONLY on our kids in college,

then ALL of the meandering around other issues is frowned upon by the “establishment”???

Would it be different if I remarked that at kiddo’s U there was a group doing an “occupy” movement and all I could do was roll my eyes–These kids are in one of the best schools in the nation/internationally at $50k+ a year…As a parent reading that in the U’s newspaper–wanted to say, so drop out, join the peace corps…

This stuff impacts our kids attitudes

Emmybet- so great that you all will be able to see your d perform. I have been hoping my d would audition for something this year, but she doesn’t want to. I am hoping next year she will be so inspired! I miss seeing her perform (not to assume she would get a part, but boy that would be nice!)

I only WISH my d would be motivated to protest something. She is so darn apathetic when it comes to politics/social causes that it drives me crazy! When I was her age I was always protesting one thing or another :)

From CC’s terms of service (aka “the establishment”):
