Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

WOW
Measles!! Yikes Yalemom. Which dorm on Old campus is he in…?
Mine have had a booster for chicken pox, yet I dont think the MDs ever offerred a booster for measles vaccine.
Years ago when we started traveling in 3rd world nations with our kids–both DH and I got all new vaccines. The only ones we couldn’t get were the small pox, which now isn’t offerred anywhere in the world. (CDC does have vaccines in storage) I had wanted us to all get the small pox vaccine because of it’s relatin to monkey pox. There was nothing I could do here stateside nor overseas to get it for us.

On Afghanistan, I’d vote “no” as well. I realize these kids are “adults”, and I myself have traveled in some of these “Less traveled parts”, as have my DH and kids when we were there as a family
… yet as heated up things are…in many regions… it would cause me to really pause before buying that plane ticket…

BI: Interesting. The HOBY selection process must work differently at different schools. My son didn’t apply – just was notified that he was selected by his guidance counselor. Took him by surprise. So sorry that Bluejrjr wasn’t chosen after making the effort.

HOBY at our hs is done by the students submitting something to a teacher/adviser. I think from that pool a cmte chooses.
Congrats to those kids in the pool.

Oh please, no worries!! He is totally fine!! I’m thrilled for the opportunity for your kids and part of life is learning we don’t get everything we apply for! It’s heathy to be turned down once in a while IMHO. Yes, at his school interested students were asked to fill out an application which consisted of several questions and one short and one longer essay. I guess they want to make sure the student they select is really interested! He’s on to the next goal.

Congrats to Omom & ADad kiddos on their selections.

Double Yikes!! to yalemom for her S’s. I know if I ever said anything negative about that internship, my DS would sign up for it instantly! That said, he is finally developing some sense of self-preservation. In college he studied Arabic & Persian, and studied abroad in a North African country. When he got back for his senior year, he apparently was approached several times by “unnamed gov’t agencies” for potential jobs abroad. He said he turned them down when he realized they were in places where people were actively trying to kill US citizens. Whew!

Blue~Sorry About HOBY. Not familiar in our parts. Good luck with your next goal.

Yalemom~Hum, globalization

MMS is the vaccine my kids had when leaving abroad, they both had the pox anyway :eek

Congratulations to Avon and Ohio :)

Avondad, Ohiomom, Congrats to your kids re: HOBY.

Yalemom2015 Yikes is right! Not sure what I would do/say about Afghanistan internship. I try not to totally shoot down things my kids are passionate about but I would probably put my foot down on that one. Its consistantly makes lists like Top 10 most dangerous places on Earth.

I personally would tell son that it would be a great place to visit and explore but to give it a few more years to cool down! Believe me I am not risk adverse and have lived all over the world but some risks are not worth it in my opinion. Anyway, obviously its your call but wow…
As for the measles, quite a week for you! I was just reading how the trend of some parents not to inoculate their children is causing a resurgence of childhood diseases that were once on their way to extinction!

Anyway I am still in recovery from the holidays and unlike Martha (aka Fogfog) have made no progress on the Christmas decorations. Am headed over to help a friend get her stuff out of her attic, maybe that will motivate me! It is always easier to help at someone else’s house than my own! Hope everyone has a great day!

Wow i thought I got the bad late night texts, but mine are just usually requests for mo money, mo money.

Last night S was lamenting about an 88 that he had gotten after some stupid mistakes. Progress, that would have been cause for celebration early in the semester. Unfortunately he needs every A he can get to get B’s this semester. This semester=growth opportunity.

Seniors with the large fonts, No that would be me. My family mocks me for having like 10 words on a page, but it’s so nice not having to wear readers. And now you can blow everything up on your smartphone too.

Congrats to Omom’s and ADad’s students on their selection for HOBY.

D is not as stressed as I would be at this point in the semester. She is…happy. She knows that she is not going to excel in one class, but barring upsetting news on Friday at a conference with that teacher (which would be totally out of the blue) she knows she will get credit/pass all classes with decent evaluations (which are in lieu of grades). The one class may be marginal, but she is passing as far as she knows and she has done the work, on time (the only one never to turn a paper in late), and redone papers once feedback was given. What she says is, even if it is a bad evaluation, who is going to care about one class first semester freshman year? (I think, but don’t tell her, who really is going to even bother to read all of the narrative evaluations for all 4 years; she will be applying to state grad school for MLIS, not med school. )

Yes, but doesn’t your finger hurt from pressing “page forward” every 3 seconds? :)

Afghanistan, huh? That makes my D’s plan to spend the summer on an archaeological dig in Turkey near the Iranian border seem tame. All I have to do is warn her not to go on hikes!

Congratulations to the HOBY kids. It’s not something I have heard about before; looks like it is fairly school-specific.

I have now reclaimed my house from the Thanksgiving holiday and am enjoying the clean emptiness before Christmas starts. Still, only 2 weeks until D comes home so I need to get organized. I think shopping is the first priority; she enjoys baking and cooking so will be annoyed if I have done much of the before she arrives.

Panic…it just dawned on me that Bluejr comes home in 15 days. The following Monday he is in surgery (a wonderful thing!), however I have to be done with everything for the holidays by then. YIKES! An hour ago I had so much more time…

BI: Breathe. Thank goodness for the internet and the ability to shop from the comfort of home. Maybe you can plan to cook and clean after his surgery and he is recuperating. I can almost get myself to the point of panic when I think of everything that needs to be done before the holidays. Need to remind myself to breathe.

Haha! December 1st will do that to a person, yesterday when it was November we still had so much time!! I actually work much more efficiently when faced with a daunting deadline, so hopefully that helps you too BI.

HH- Right on the “no-hiking” reminders! So glad part of my service to this board is to lower the bar of “things we won’t let our students do”, haha! DH forbid me from talking about it until it becomes a real possibility- so I’m metaphorically covering my ears and singing at the top of my lungs for now.

Congrats to both kids who were selected as HOBY winners.

Yalemom, is your son out of his mind!?!?

I tried to convince my Dad that he would love a Kindle but he is incredibly stubborn. It’s probably for the better since he can barely answer his cell phone. My mom, OTOH, downloads books from the library and reads them on her smart phone.

Boychild called last night at midnight(!!!) wanting me to send a copy of a memo he had written about JROTC last spring that he needs for his internship applications. Couldn’t find it anywhere in saved docs so he’ll have to wait until he’s home or start from scratch. He’s applying to the same ones (both our Senators) he did last summer and didn’t get.

A good friend has a son who is a reporter in Kabul; he works for a large organization and loves the most dangerous postings. He was kidnapped (short time only, thank heavens) at an earlier posting in a different country. He is well into his 40s but she can never, ever rest easy. Fortunately my kiddo is not a great risk-taker…but I applaud those who are although would hope they would wait until later before venturing into really unsafe territories!

The calendar turn started my countdown clock - 16 days until DS returns. He asked for homemade cookies for exams so time to check supplies and then figure out mailing!

Happy December :)

Hi All

Well my countdown clock on my phone (thanks to DH) says…
12 days, 2 hrs, 19 min 3 sec…

Kiddo got the package with the chocolate advent calemdar today–so that was fortunate.
Kiddo had the first exam yesterday–evidently the physics lab exam is given the last lab day before reading period. Thankful that the exams are in the front part of the exam week…starting that Saturday.

Working on the Christmas shopping. I do all I can online.

I just read an item about Andover high school and the hazing incident. Absolutely horrid. I hope those responsible are expelled.

Got cold enough here that the heat came on last night…DH this am wanted to know how to bump the thermostadt–I keep it low… :D

I may call kiddo’s MD and ask about measles boosters etc…

Appliance man here today–the icemaker in the freezer is having trouble–and the winecooler’s starter relay switch and fan assembly are broken. That was not good news this am.
I feel like I keep putting out “fires”. I was working on bids to re-tile the kids’ bath and the first one was so high–it delayed the project. Got a second one and so now I may push the project til after the holiday…had hoped to have it done before then–as right now the kids use the guest bath for showering…
DH has put a moritorium on spending --yet right now the kids’ shower is not usable as the grout is out and the tile flexes off the cement board…And the icemaker had started acting up more than a year ago and I have put it off…The wine cabinet went bad in the last few days. When it rains…it pours.

Thought you would all get a smile out of the countdown posting for December 1st on the HS Class of 2014 thread. I know that several of you including us have 2014 kids.

**For those of you who are not keeping track……………………………………

851 days until the Class of 2014 SS Indecision sets sail on April 1, 2014

761 days until the Class of 2014 Common Application RD deadline on January 1, 2014

700 days until the Class of 2014 Common Application ED deadline on November 1, 2013

Just a warning from those of us with kids in the HS Class of 2011 – it goes faster than you will believe!

In summary    :D**

Avon: there is a REASON why I have been avoiding the HS Class of 2014 thread. I am not ready to think about this yet!

Avon, my friend, some of us are PURPOSELY not keeping track :D
