I believe AP World History and AP Euro must overlap quite a bit. S is taking AP World and his AP teacher has advised them all to go ahead and sit the AP Euro test as well without any extra studying. He says the World will almost fully prepare them for the Euro and they should get a 3 without any extra effort. S is going to try it, we figure he has nothing to lose and everything to gain if he gets the credit. I believe the AP teacher said they were going to be eliminating one of the 2 (world and euro) as they are so similar

So that’s my 2 cents on the subject. I’ll let you know how it works out when we get the scores, lol!

Fabulous news AvonDad…sooo happy to hear such great news.

Tom kiddo flies back to school. The break was really nice. We ate (alot). Played many board games on various nights. Saw a few movies. Kiddo trained for sport 4x a week for 2 of the 3 weeks.
Kiddo is ready to be back w friends and classes and team…
We shipped a box of clothes etc. since kiddo flew with just a carry-on (small duffle). Wish I was so good at packing light.

I have had a few boughts of brief tears (to DH) as I know kiddo wont be likely be home til mid May…the team practices during the spring break. No definitive plans for us to visit in the spring.
I am so pleased kiddo is so happy at the U, I just will miss the family nights and down time together.

For a first semester, STEM major and 2 a day varsity sport commitment; the adjustment has been good. Kiddo has ambitious plans for spring term. Will be meeting with advisor. Class selection/shopping period is this coming week.

So happy to hear about the good news for the Avon family.

DS does not have his driver’s license nor does he have interest in getting it. Will limit his summer job search to places with good mass transit.

Great news Avonfamily–really happy to hear.

D2 left yesterday morning and I’m feeling a little melancholy. She’s in GA at a training camp and I’m a little anxious to hear from her in terms of how it’s going. She likes the girls on her team and I’m sure the bonding will be good but the workout schedule seems pretty intense. D1 leaves Sunday and it’ll be back to DH, D3 and me.

Good morning. Coffee, tea and muffins are ready!

My DS leaves tomorrow. He goes back for reading period and then finals. Although it would have been nice to have finals done before the holidays, he hasn’t seemed too stressed. He will definitely be studying next week! So I guess I’ll be one of the last to see how first semester grades turn out!

It has warmed up here, and looks like a beautiful day! Enjoy!

Thanks to all for the positive thoughts and well wishes for AvonMom. I just returned from the airport with her sister who will be staying with us for a week or so and who will provide additional moral and spiritual support. Her presence will also “soften the blow” that she will feel next week when S heads back to school on Tuesday afternoon.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and the weather continues to be mild for all given the time of the year. :)

Avondad~ Thanks for the update, great idea to have her sister visiting… it is always rough to see them leave…and it never gets easier :(

VA~Thanks for breakfast, good luck to your son during his next two weeks.

FL~Interesting article. Thank you

Down to S1 here, last week end together.Dinner party in his honor tonight, cooking his favorite meal plus our traditional Kings cake for desert (worth the labor)! Tomorrow last trip to the city for a show and dinner. :D

S2 will be returning to campus tomorrow have not heard from him , however heard training was unbelievable!

Avondad - So happy to hear the positive report on Avonmom. What a champion you have been for her. As independent as we like to be, there are certainly times we need to lean on our partners! Sending hugs to the entire Avon family!! Also glad Avonmom will get to share some time with her sister. That support, both physically and emotionally, can not be underestimated.

VaMom - Thanks for the breakfast. No more snow-squalls. I am ready for a tiny bit of winter. These 60 degree days in the mid-Atlantic are odd given the last two winters we’ve had (snowmagedden & snocropolis). I know, be careful what I wish for…

2edu - Waving to my fellow Hoo-mom. Enjoy your last weekend with S1. Sounds like you have lots of fun things planned for his send off. I’m sure you’ll hear from S2 once he gets back to school. In this case no news may be good news (ie no injuries!).

Bluejr has his resume up to date and actually did send out a letter to a local company that hires interns. He has not heard from the corp that he interviewed with on campus in October however it was a very long shot and it’s still within the window that they are to get back with him. He also made some movement ordering books. I was surprised that some profs have not listed information yet!! Way to limit the kids to the campus bookstore due to having no time to mail order from Amazon, etc. Very frustrating!! He has been able to be somewhat productive in those PJ’s. Also, his main hs EC has been gearing up for their huge project so he’s been back at the hs to mentor the new crop of kids until he goes back to school. Luckily his specialty is a different area then S3’s so there is no conflict (of ego’s) there. I think it’s pretty nice when the college kids come back to help out during kick-off/early season. It makes it a very family oriented atmosphere. Also, the younger kids get to talk to the returning kids about what they are doing in college, etc., so they become a good source of information and motivation as well.

Hoping everyone has a wonderful day and enjoys these last few days with our ‘second semester college kids’. For those that have already launched your kiddos back to school, enjoy the quiet…the clean up will be there tomorrow! :)

Ds just texted me that he’s about to march into the stadium for his first bowl game! whoot whoot! Apparently they bussed the kids down - it’s about 13 hrs from Pitt to AL, they did a street fair/pep rally last night and today’s game on espn at 1 pm est. That’s my boy!!

fogfog I got very weepy when my son mentioned yesterday how fast the three weeks went by! I actually had an honest to goodness cry complete with red eyes and runny nose requiring numerous tissues. I started up again in the evening and again this morning-not so bad as the first but still! This is far more than I did before he left in August.

He too won’t be coming home for a while-I got spoiled first semester when he came home every three to four weeks. His Spring break may well be gone because that is when he moved his required Jury Duty to-that really makes me furious that he is required as a non-resident student to do this-and there are no exceptions. He can ask for a student exemption so I hope it is granted but they may figure you can come for the week-what a pain. I have no issue with him doing his civic duty and serving-but you should be allowed by the Commonwealth of MA to do this where you actually live.

He also will be going to Rome the week after school lets out and be gone up to two months. The reality that I may hardly see him much until July is finally hitting me. A few days ago I was ready to have him head back to school because he seemed to just be hanging around here but now I wish I could keep him home forever. :(

I know though these are all good signs that he is making the break and moving on to the next phase of his life-but right now I don’t like it very much! :(

Like your family, our student will likely be gone all summer as well. I think kiddo will be home briefly after regionals for sport and the semester…and will likely head out again 2 weeks later to train all summer - competing nationally and int’l.
For all of hs, kiddo was gone a large part of the summer with sport and competition…that will continue at the collegiate level

Like you, I am happy the transition has gone well. Academics were respectable. Kiddo says not a day goes by without feeling humbled and awed to be at school. Enjoying it very much and awed by the people there. The team demands are very heavy and kiddo really likes the teammates and epirit d corps.

For me the realization that kiddo has been truly launched into the young adult world–and that kiddo won’t really ever live here again is a mixed bag of feelings. :)

I noticed that kiddo was a bit bored here–slept in alot, stayed up with friends and activities…a different schedule from the house/family.
Kiddo was a little bit quicker to be annoyed when I asked a question–as kiddo assumed I “knew” things…
had to keep saying that I don’t know x, or y or z…as you aren’t here, I am not there and I don’t know what your day/week/practice etc etc is like…
I think kiddo’s happy transition into more lots of independence has caused kiddo to forget that we have no clue about much…

Kiddo was gone most of the fall–we only saw each other for turkey day and this break…
We didn’t go to parents weekend and kiddo was very scheduled/committed to team things and there was no “free” weekend/time to fly back.
Looking at the spring schedule, team commitments, no time to see us during spring break, the late Easter holiday etc…I am not sure when a visit from us will be least disruptive to the heavy schedule :(

AmandaK–reminded the game–Hope to spot your DS. Hope he had a blast ;)

Awww Pepper, so sorry for the sad/sentimental day. I too have realized that we won’t have the ‘built in visits’ we did during first semester when we were going down for football games. The second semester is going to be a much different animal. As you said, all good signs that they are making the break and positive steps towards independence. It still stings.

AK - I’ll be sure to look for kayakson! My best gf from high school has a DD that is a first year in the marching band at 'bama so this is a very exciting year in their house as well!

ESPN 1pm est in case you wondered…he posted a panoramic pic of the band in the stadium - so cool.
Pepper - Hey, now you stop that. You need to be the tough one here, don’t go and get all sentimental!! Look, our sons will be living with us and borrowing the car for quite some time missy! He’s going to have a fun time on a jury (or do what my husband did when faced with a murder trial in Newark, when jury selection comes around, say “I know he did it, you can see it in his eyes.” Boom - he was released). And Rome - geez, he’s going to have the time of his life. And tell you all about it. And love you even more for letting him go and have these opportunities. :)

Thanks for the responses on AP euro. My instinct tells me the same thing that two APs at the same time will be too much especially it is the first year he is taking an AP class. Some students can do it but definitely not a kid who still needs to work on time management skills.

AK-we have been watching college bowl games all week and I am going to look out for the Pitt vs. SMU game if S1 will get out of the Xbox live!

Please don’t watch that game - I’ve been screaming at the screen and it doesn’t seem to help them play any better! It’s just sad - these poor boys might want to try a different sport!
