Congratulations bopper!! An early graduate! I think most of us on here still have a 1+ year to go!

Bopper - congrats to your D as the first graduate in our “class”. Our S still has 3 semesters and has only 1 elective class that he can play with in order to meet the requirements of his major and two minors. It’s going to be a busy 3 semesters for him.

bopper, that is just wonderful news. Yay for having more math teachers in the world!

Stay warm and safe.

Bopper–Congrats to your D and her being our first graduate! Good luck to her on her Master’s degree plans!

DS is home and I’m somewhat behind the power curve. We usually have a tree up and decorated, but haven’t even gotten the tree yet. I’m hoping to get it tonight.

Here’s hoping for great results on finals for those taking them and safe travels for the holidays!

What’s with D and flights? She’s supposed to come home tonight - but there’s supposed to be a storm with 3-5 inches of snow. Some flights out of Cleveland are already delayed - who knows how this will affect her late evening flight! Keeping my fingers crossed !

arisamp–I hope your D made it home safely. Did you get that snow? We had ice but no snow.

AnonHSDad and others - my daughter needs to pick up 6 credits of electives in order to graduate on time at Vandy (she had to drop a couple courses her first very tough 2 years). UT Austin has wonderful distance learning courses that her Vandy advisor said they would accept. Only $550 each and you have 5 months to complete each course. Well worth checking out!

Moonmaid - ^^^ good info about UT. Thanks for the tip.

S-2011 is due to fly home from the UK on Saturday so today we received a notice from his home school’s overseas security and travel service warning of possible travel delays due to a bad storm named Emily that is pounding most of the west coast of England and Scotland. Just what we need. :(

At least there was some good news in the house this week. D-2014 received her EA acceptance notice from Villanova last night! :)

Congrats to Bopper’s D on her graduation and Avon’s D on her acceptance! Safe and timely travels to all our students.

Congratulations to Avon’s D!

Vamom - thanks for asking. D did make it home safely that night. We got over 6-8 inches of snow and it was bad during the evening commute. All flights from Baltimore to Boston were canceled after hers - hers was delayed for three hours. She managed (with some guidance from mom) to find a flight to Manchester NH that was leaving right then and hop onto it instead of waiting for her boston flight. Made it here on time! Driving was a bit treacherous that night and we spun out of control once on the way back - fortunately, no other cars on the highway while we were spinning around.

Now, waiting for S to come home tomorrow…

arisamp - that sounds scary. Good thing the road was clear of other vehicles and you stayed on the road. Smart thinking to get D rerouted to Manchester.

S has started his long trip home and is on the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow. When we had to change his flight due to a totally inflexible final exam schedule, it was about $300 less to have him fly out of Glasgow even after the rail ticket and an airport hotel this evening. He flies out at 9 AM UK time (4 AM EST) and flies into Newark with a connection home, arriving in Cleveland around 5 PM tomorrow afternooon.

D-2014 got her 2nd EA acceptance last night at 12:05 AM (they said they would post on the 20th but 5 after 12 must be a record!). It looks like I will be both the Captain and a busy passenger on this year’s sailing of the SS Indecision!

Wishing him safe travels. We rarely fly in/ out of Glasgow. I am assuming he is on the Continental flight? We always fly delta and connect in either Paris or Amsterdam to Atl. Delta operated a direct flight Atl to Edi for about 2 years. It was wonderful. I was so sad when they moved it to JFK.

Congrats to your D. Is this your last to launch? This time next year my d2 will be in the midst if college applications.

Sally ^^ S made it home about an hour ago. The Glasgow flight was direct to Newark on United (the old Continental). Since the flight was two hours late is was fortunate that he had a 3 1/2 hour plus connection. As it turns out, by the time he got through Immgration and Customs and security and rechecked his bags, he arrived at his connecting gate just a couple of minutes before they started boarding. He said there were quite a few study abroad students returning on that flight and many missed their conncetions in Newark due to the late departure and arrival there. The delay was a ripple effect as the aircraft was originally delayed in Chicago due to weather, then made the Newark to Glasgow eastbound run before turning around this morning.

Our D-2014 is the youngest and last to launch. 3 for 3 so far with 3 more to go in the RD round. It’s a long wait until the end of March!

But she has some great choices. As she said to AvonMom and I, its nice to be wanted! :)

Happy Holidays to all! and congratulations and smooth sailing to AvonHSDad!

Only getting two weeks with my son this semester break - he’s going back 10 days early to work at school. I’m trying not to mind, but time with him is getting more precious as graduation is getting closer.

Really enjoyng the holiday, though, and wish the same for you all!

Congratulations to AvonDad’s D! It is great to have some acceptances in your back pocket. Both kids are home and both fly out the 6th. D11 to Rome for semester abroad and D13 back to school for winter term. D13 has transitioned much more smoothly as compared to D11…funny how that works.

D is home for only a week more before heading back to school, but I am already looking ahead to the Summer. She is interested in an unpaid internship in New York. Since it’s unpaid she can apply for a grant from her college to cover expenses. For the grant application she needs to estimate her housing ( we are not local to NYC) , food and transportation costs. I am hoping she will be able to get summer NYU housing. Was wondering if anyone here has any knowledge on estimating food costs and alternative housing options? Of course I want her to be in a safe area and she is likely to have a friend or two as roommates for the Summer. She is also going to see if she can get some sort of part time paying job, but I’m not too optimistic that will pan out. She has spent the past two Summers taking classes and this internship is a good opportunity for her, but I wish she could at least earn some spending money! I’d like her to finish the grant application this week while she is still home and not busy with classes, etc. And she can apply for the grant now even if the details for the internship are not finalized yet. I’d appreciate any cost estimates and advice!

My d1 will be interning in Manhattan. She is planning on living in the NYU dorms. The company she is interning with reserve a blog for the students in their program.

Happy New Years Eve!

Have a fun and safe New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Most of our kids go back to campus in a week or so for the second semester of their junior year. Only one more year to go for many of them!

Happy New Year!
