S turned 21 today and proudly reported that they had the typical party and several of his closest friends hosted him at the local campus restaurant and watering hole right at midnight last night. Evidently it has been a tradition for many years to have your first celebratory drink at the Toombs. The good news is that is actually just across the street and about 3 buildings down from his dorm-apartment so getting there and back was not a problem. (Smiley face)

<:-P Happy Birthday Avonson! My ds informed me he will still be at school because he’s cross-registered for one class in a nearby college that gets out later. So I won’t know what I don’t see, which is good. He just asked me to think of drinks he should try. X_X

Love the Tombs. My H worked there as did his older brother. In fact we found the engraved plaque with his brothers name on the bar (I guess this was a tradition for long time student employees back in the day).

Hard to believe these kids are turning 21. Happy Birthday to Avonson. My d is the last of her friends, she is not 21 till August. She still looks like she is in High school. Her 16 year old sis looks older than her. I keep reminding her when she is 35 she will be so happy she has a young looking face

D is not impressed that Tulane is having a snow/ice day today. She thought she was done with that sort of stuff when she graduated high school. Apparently she didn’t choose to go to school in New Orleans in order to have snow days… Her classmates have experienced the whole gamut of weather during their 2½ years in NOLA, they have had a week off due to a hurricane (beginning of sophomore year) and now at least a day off due to winter weather.

Happy Birthday to AvonSon! D has about two months to go for the milestone - H wants us to go down there over the weekend to celebrate with her. Not sure if she will have the time for us :)

Really, really cold out in the midwest. S’s high school didn’t cancel classes - but some of the rooms are really cold and they have classes in the library instead. D’s school canceled classes for today - she’s happily tucked into bed, relaxing! And WARM!

Thanks to everyone for the AvonSon birthday wishes. His birthday gift box finally arrived at this dorm pick-up office today (after being delivered to the school mail facility last Friday!) so we had a happy call from S this evening. He was most excited about the personal Kuerig coffee maker and the cash he received. B-) The rest of his gift is a trip with us and his older half-brother and wife to Las Vegas over the Valentine’s - President’s Day weekend. He has never been so he is really excited about the trip and the fun he will have as he has heard so much about it and he has a cousin currently living and working there he wants to see.

I agree. Its really a fun spot so close to campus. S’s dorm/apartment building is just across the street so it is so close for them. We have heard it hasn’t changed much over the years and we always try to go at least once when we are in town. It also seems to be a great place for a campus job as you are always busy. We will have to look for the plaques on our next visit and see if they still do that for their student staffers.

Nice to see some “seasoned” posters back on this thread! Glad to hear that your son survived his 21st birthday celebration AvonHSDad! Our son will turn 21 while he is in Ireland, and woo hoo, we’ll be there with him. I wonder if it won’t be a bit of a let down though since the drinking age is 18 there.

Weatherwise, this is certainly a good winter for him not to be in Vermont. Temps there have not been above freezing for awhile and I imagine the snow has been piling up. I am impressed with how his college does the study abroad in Dublin. When we first heard of how they have a physical campus and how the vast majority of students are from his college, it seemed that the kids would not be very well integrated into the city. However, that’s not been the case and there’s been several big and small group outings and much encouragement for the students to participate locally. This weekend son is planning to head out to Budapest and stay with a long time on-line friend. He’s going with another friend from Scotland, whom he also met on-line and more recently in person. Our global society in action!

kathiep - a friend of D’s is at UVM and is currently doing a study abroad in Vienna. Looks fabulous from the pictures she’s been posting. She sure must be glad not to be in Vermont this semester!

@kathiep was that part of his decision to SA during winter? If so good job! Dublin sounds wonderful-these programs are great!

@AvonHSDad Happy Birthday to your son! Mine is turning 21 next month and has had a countdown calendar going for a while! Like you I am glad he is going to school where he neither has or needs a car to “celebrate”!

Congrats to all the recent birthdays. Friendly word of warning - as soon as kids find out yours is “of age” likely to be inundated with requests to buy. Mine was when he turned 21 in the early fall. Had no problem saying no but was put in some uncomfortable situations. Stay warm, everyone!

Ha Ha Pepper. Son could care less about drinking, and I’m guessing turning 21 in Ireland is going to be a bit anti-climatic!

Siemom, I had that talk with S when he turned 21 in August. He doesn’t drink at all and his group of gamers apparently is not into parties either. He is in Seattle today interviewing, got my fingers and toes crossed he gets the summer job.

I would upload a mamabear avatar picture if I could figure out how to do it. Nevermind, found it!

My DS is a late birthday–doesn’t turn 21 until July, so he’s probably one of the last of his peers to get to 21. Since he’s not much of a drinker he will probably celebrate with some top shelf type drink–he has dubbed himself an alcohol snob since he doesn’t drink much, when he does he tends to pick the good stuff!

Mine doesn’t turn 21 until September, so likewise, his friends will all be of age before him. He doesn’t drink, but he and his roommates have gotten into cooking nice meals, so they probably will be happy when one of them can buy wine to cook with (that’s not “cooking wine”).

@walkinghome I guess I wasn’t clear I meant did your son plan his SA to get away from the Vermont winter! 8-|

Ahh! I certainly would have but I think it just worked best in his schedule.

What a quiet thread. Everyone must be hibernating in order to get through this miserable winter that doesn’t want to end.

Turned DS’s Monday into a good day. I electronically filed his taxes for him on the 2nd and his refund was sitting in his checking account this morning. He was hoping to get his refund in time for spring break but we beat that by several weeks!
