@minnymom - Congrats to your S on his job offer. Are they giving him much time to decide and respond? It sounds like they are trying to beat out the competition and hire the best kids first.

Our S got a call back for the 3rd round which is on the employer’s office campus nearby his college campus. Because they want him for a half day round of interview sessions and lunch, and they want the candidates there without worrying about rush hour traffic, they are sending a car to campus to pick up 3 or 4 kids the evening before their visit. They will be taken to a veery nice hotel near the prospective employer’s facilities where they can have dinner and relax before their intensive day of interviews. They are also being provided with breakfast, a shuttle to the offices and a return ride to campus following their session. He is quite excited about the potential opportunity. He even said that if nothing else comes of thism he has gotten some great interviewing experience.

Congratulations to all the kids with job offers and offers-in-the-works and next step interviews. How exciting! It seems like only a short time ago, college apps were in and we all wondered where our kids would wind up for 4 years. Now, whooosh indeed. S2 is not in a field that does anything as civilized as early recruitment/hires. Hires happen as needed, so … well … I’m just hoping a lot of opportunities suddenly open up in June. !! S2 is also looking at doing a year of research abroad and spent the summer readying fellowship applications–but the country he wants to study in is the longest shot in a very competitive field. I am cheering him on, but it seems we’ll be late among this group to know what’s going on next year. Hope everyone comes back to keep us up to date. I love following our kids (adults) on their next adventures.

S will be flown with other hires to company headquarters for two nights in mid- November. Hotel- private rooms, dining, flight all paid for. They will meet department heads and then will rank order preferences for assignments- I guess like a draft. Salary and letter signing will happen after that.

Congrats on all the interviews and job offers. When my D1 was a senior a few years ago, she was fortunate enough to get a job offer in the fall. D2 is in a field like Madbean’s son so she will not begin looking until the spring.

I have been lax lately in having my cyber brunch ready on time. I have it out and ready today, come on over and join in the conversation!

My thought topic today is the holidays. Are your kids coming home for Thanksgiving? My D is in Cuba and won’t be here. She came home for Thanksgiving her freshman year and not since.

D also struggled with asthma, as well as some more serious lung issues, while in high school. She has been told she needs a flu shot every year for the rest of her life, that is has to be the shot and not the mist. She hasn’t had one yet this year, it was too early to get it in August when she left for Cuba. I am trying to figure out if it is important enough to figure out how to do it while in Cuba or if it can wait until the middle of December when she flies home.

bajamm, on the important issue, people say that health care in Cuba is quite good. Cuba exports doctors around the world. So, going for health care there wouldn’t be like going to another, equally poor country.

Our kids have come home every year (or to a relative’s house) except I believe for ShawD’s freshman year when she was in Canada. ShawD now lives and goes to school roughly an hour away (give or take a fair bit due to rush hour). She’s our Class of 2011 kid. Last year, she worked on Thanksgiving because in her job, you needed to choose one of Thanksgiving Christmas or New Years and we had plans for both. Fortunately, she quit her hospital job to be a TA in a med/surg class. ShawSon is in grad school on the west coast but has the entire week off so he is coming back. For many years, we always celebrated with my family. It used to be in NJ and occasionally in DC. Now the critical relatives are spread in Boston, NY, NJ, DC, and Memphis. I’m not going to ask ShawSon to fly one more time for part of his much-needed trip.

S11 is a Res Assistant in university apartments this year. He pulled Thanksgiving weekend duty and can’t come home. S14 attends college in same city and is ok with staying at college for TG, so we are going to drive to them. Our family is small and we just lost my husband’s mother, so going to the kids will mix it up. Should be fun. We will go to a football game, eat, shop, just hang out.

Our D11 is happily attending school locally and living at home so yes, she will be here for Thanksgiving.
S14 will be home for the first time since going away to school 1000 miles away this fall. He has the whole week off! :x

S-11 and D-14 will be home for TG. They both fly home Tuesday evening and return on the Sunday after TG (the travel day from he**!)

D-14 has been home all week on fall break and is flying back tomorrow morning. I just hope the flights run on time for her return. It took her 13 hours to get home last Saturday due to mechanical delays, missed connections, etc.

S received a call back from a second prospective employer and is being flown to Chicago at the end of this coming week. He spent yesterday at the LSAC Law School fair in Manhattan and flew out this moring to visit his GF in KY for the first time this semester. He has a “Day at Headquarters” visit and interview next Tuesday. That one is at least local to his school. He seems to be traveling more than we can keep track of these days. And LSAT scores are due next Wednesday but are typically released a couple of days early. That will help drive his decision for next year and/or add to indecision about next year.

I received an email from D in Cuba yesterday. She is there with a small group of 13 students, 10 from Tulane and 3 from Rice. She had too roommates and they both had to return home this past week. Ones mom died of a heart attack and the other’s dad was dx with terminal cancer. D was really shaken up and needed reassurance that we were all OK

She doesn’t get online much, it is expensive and spotty for her and she doesn’t have much money. She wrote right when I was taking her younger brother to school and it took me a half hour to see her email. She stayed on line until I answered her that all was fine.

The group left early this morning to travel the length and width of Cuba until November 2. I hope they can enjoy it and not miss their cohorts back at home too much.

Bajamm, that’s really a shame about your daughter’s roommates. I’m glad you were able to get in contact with her and reassure her. It’s tough to deal with things when you are far from home.

That’s awful @bajamm. Hope you hear from her again soon and everything’s ok.

D came home for the weekend with her friend. Was a wonderfully crazy two days. The friend was fabulous - got along with all of us just fine and didn’t bat an eye at all the crazy stuff our family does Had friends over for dinner on Sat night, went for a hike and apple picking on Sunday. Gorgeous weather too!

Didn’t get to talk to D much one-one since her friend was also here. But she seems happy - she’s had a couple of interviews and is expecting a few more. She also did pretty well on her MCAT, so she is definitely applying to med school next year. She seems very keen on squeezing and enjoying every bit of her senior year!

D1 came home for her Fall break last week. We did the typical New England family activities- apple picking, corn maze, etc. She baked a different apple dessert every day, and made some apple cider sangria. (It is nice to be over 21!). She even took D2 on a college visit.

She accepted her job offer with the company that she interned and will start in June. She decided not to negotiate, despite many peoplefrom school telling her that she should . Her salary is much higher than the mean for her major in the past year, so she was very happy with it.

She went back to school early to help with sorority recruitment. She will also be inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering honor society within a few weeks.

@gsmomma - congratulations!! We have a lot of apples from our apple picking the other day - have to figure out what to make for the halloween party tomorrow :)
